Curse of the Fallen

Prologue:

Isaac crept silently into the throne room and froze. The dark stone walls seemed to smother the dying light of the candle flames. Even the few tapestries that hung from just below the ceiling gave no feeling of warmth. Isaac leaned back, hiding in the shadows. He had not expected Lord Sammael to be back from the Castle Zophiel until further into the night.

Something important was being discussed. At least that was what Isaac assumed as he gazed at his Lord and the being’s only son. A few stray strands of Isaac’s thick brown hair fell in front of his smoky gray eyes but he dared not move them. The Lord would sense the movement and being a soldier, Isaac knew that he would not be bothered by the distraction.

Lord Sammael glared angrily at his young son. Sammael’s son, Adam, was trying desperately to stand up to the older and stronger being. Sammael had all of the qualities of any Lord. The long silken black hair, pale skin, harsh features and piercing blue eyes. Their build was never very impressive but when they spread out those massive black wings any creature would run in terror. Thankfully the Lords were there to protect the humans, Isaac’s kind, and not to be enemies.

Isaac often noticed slight differences in Adam’s appearance than the other humans and the Lords. That was only natural. The two boys had grown up together. Adam was the only friend Isaac knew that he could trust. Together they learned important battle strategies and long lasting life lessons but there was more ahead of them than anyone could have planned.

Adam’s eyes gave it away most of all. They were not blue but green, and very catlike. Isaac had also been surprised to see that Adam had elegantly curved retractable claws. That was not something found in Lords. At least, not according to what Isaac knew. He had never been in a position to study another Lord as closely as he studied Adam.

“ What am I father?” Adam’s voice interrupted Isaac’s thoughts. He seemed distressed as he spoke, his voice was soft and almost to low to hear. Isaac had never heard him speak like that before. It frightened the young human boy. Adam bit down hard on his lower lip, his fang drew blood there and it trickled slowly down his chin before dripping onto the crisp white fabric of his shirt.

Sammael laughed coldly. ‘ I think you already know.” Sammael had not lost his ability to send chills up Isaac’s spine with his every word. The man had a way of nearly making Isaac lose his control. However, he refused to be caught.

Adam turned, his eyes tightly shut. Isaac watched as his friend walked swiftly towards the door of the throne room. Isaac risked taking a step back for better coverage from the shadows. Adam paused openopening his eyes he glanced at the corner that Isaac had chosen. Isaac held his breath, hoping that even Adam would not find him. As if Adam had read his friends mind he continued on in silence. Isaac gave a sigh of relief before wondering about the tears glistening in Adam’s eyes.

The chilling sound of Sammael’s voice froze Isaac. “ You there! What have you heard.”
