the greatest gifts of all

the man stumbled out of the small office building and to the parking lot. it was 9:49 pm and he was working late. he was hoping that his girlfriend, Lindsey would be waiting up for him so they could watch a movie together, like they always do. he got to his car and unlocked it. he threw his jacket in the back seat and got into the drivers seat.

starting the car, he drove out of the parking lot. the couples house wasn't far from the small building so he got home quickly. he got out of his car tired and walked up to the door, unlocking it. when he got inside, he noticed the lights off. Lindsey was nowhere to be found.

he walked up the stairs and into the bedroom. he found Lindsey already in bed, but still awake.

he smiled and begin untying his suit.

"how was work?" Lindsey asked, sounding upset.

the man noticed right away that his girlfriend wasn't happy.

"oh, it was okay. whats wrong?" he asked.

the young woman didn't say anything. 

"Lindsey, i know when something is wrong. so whats wrong?"

the young woman sighed.

"Jace, you forgot about my birthday. you always call me and tell me happy birthday, but you forgot. didn't you?" she asked, small tears pricking out of her eyes.

the man looked at his girlfriend, looking surprised. 

it never did come to his mind what day it was. he was so busy with work that he couldn't keep up with the days anymore.

he didn't say a word.

"of course you did. your so caught up in your stupid work you don't have time for me anymore." Lindsey says, turning away from the man as she laid down.

Jace went around to the other side of the bed and also laid down. 

that night, he couldn't sleep. he sighed and got out of the bed and downstairs and grabbed his keys. 

he got back into his car and drove into town. he saw that the pet store was still opened and he knew Lindsey loved dogs. he pulled into the parking lot and parked. 

he got out of the car and went into the pet store.

"hello sir how may i help you?" a cheerful woman asked, smiling.

"where are your dogs?" he asked politely.

"they are in the back." the woman said, smiling.

he smiled back and went to the back, seeing tons of dogs.

one caught his eye immediately. the dog has a white spot around his left eye and his fur is all black.

"aw, what a cutie." he said.

he picked him out and got some stuff for the dog.

after he paid, he went back to his car. he drove out of the parking lot and back home. 

he noticed all of the lights on and smiled.

Lindsey always gets up around 1 or 2 am because of her being pregnant. 

he got the dog out of the car and into the house silently.

"Jace?" she asked.

he smiled. she hasn't noticed the dog yet. 

"where were you?" 

"oh, i just went out for a drive. i couldn't sleep." he said.

he then showed her the small dog.

"also happy birthday, baby."

she squealed, and took the dog from him gently.

"can we name him spottie?" she asked happily.

"whatever you want baby." 

everything seemed to be okay with them again. they even got their second gift that early morning, their newborn daughter, Lena.
