Emerald Pt.1
"Harley you can't do this!... it's too damn dangerous to go out into the woods by yourself!" With long tapered ears pinned back she sighed as this was the tenth time on the way down the high way that she was receiving this scolding from her older brother. She sighed and crossed her arms over her ample bust and glared out the window "I'm doing this Quinton... if you don't take me to the drop off site I'll just find someone else to do it" she winced when he slammed his fist against the steering wheel and instinctively moved away from him "stubborn bull headed doe!" Her head snapped in his direction and she glared at him "stubborn bull headed stallion!!" She hated when he pointed out that she was a doe, it reminded her that she had been adopted when her parents had been killed.
Harley and her family had been flying in a small bush plane on their way to a small cabin her father had rented for the summer when they had hit an unexpected storm, lightning struck the right engine causing it to blow, and the rest of the plane to catch fire before dropping from the sky. Harley was the only one to survive, she had no memory of the crash except for a very fuzzy image of black bat like wings and being held as it seemed like she had floated to the ground.
At the time Quinton had been her school friend and when her parents had perished, he had begged his parents to take in the young doe, which they readily had. She watched as he ran his fingers through his mane and sighed softly knowing he had hit a sensitive button with her. "Sorry... I just wish I knew why you were so obsessed with this Harley. They don't even exist, they never have." She looked out the window annoyed she had to go over this again "then why are dragons mentioned in just about every ancient civilization, and in civilizations that never even had contact with one another? And if they don't exist then why did I see one the day the plane crashed?...or at least I'm sure I did" He sighed and shook his head "you're crazy for doing this Harley, at least the last few times you got a "lead" you had others with you, this time your alone" she rolled her eyes "I'll be just fine Quin, I have everything I need, even the rifle dad made me practice with every day for a month. Besides every time I had someone with me they would just get in the way... look there's the parking lot for the park" begrudgingly he pulled into a free space and got out of the car to help her with her things.
She could tell his anger was stemming from fear and worry and once she had her back pack on with her sleeping roll and rifle all put into place she looked up at him with her deep brown eyes and a soft smile, placing her hands on his chest she sighed softly "I promise Quin I'll be okay" with a surprised squeak he wrapped his arms around her narrow waist and hugged her to him hard "a week Harley... I mean it. If your not back here in a week when I come to pick you up I'll call everyone from the troopers to the national guard. Then I'll kick your ass once you're found" with a watery chuckle as she was getting teary eyed she leaned up and placed a kiss on his cheek "I promise Quin, I'll be here when you come to pick me up" with one last squeezing hug he let her go and she turned with a wave and carefully climbed over the fence with his help and she began to slowly make her way down into the ravine that she would follow for the next three and a half days before looping around and making her way back.
