Blackbirds

I remembered dragging myself into the bathtub, my body aching from hours of vomiting. The water usually soothed my nerves as well as my screaming muscles but this time I simply wanted to ease myself into sleep.
As I turned the water on full heat I shivered. Being I'll had not allowed me to gather warmth from anything. God knows I tried. I quickly laid down in the bottom of the tub, resting my head on the slowly warming service and closed my eyes. At this point I was trying my damnest to remember any prayer that brought me solace. I, unfortunately, could recall none. So instead I made my own.
The water rose as I thought I prayed myself to sleep, I could no longer hear anything nor could I feel the steaming water rise around it. All was still, all was silent.
Within that silence I first saw them. Birds of the darkest black, their feathers shown like the deepest ebony. They flew toward me, circling my body in a haze, they began to chant,

"Follow the Blackbirds, follow pretty black birds..."

There was something so soothing in their chant, I , in my state of delirium wanted nothing more than the pain to stop. I wanted everything to just stop. Still, I did not follow. I simply watched as they first flew above my head then down and around me, still chanting. Another voice, so silky in seduction, began to whisper in my ear,

" Follow the blackbirds... Follow them and your pain will end... No.more pain... Blissfully peace..."

I felt my body start to rise, I knew I was following the black birds, everything began to fade...

"ALYSSA!!" a voice gurgled.

I felt myself trying to come through the haze.

"ALYSSA!!" the voice came through like bells ringing and the sensation of an 18 wheeler hitting me in the chest caused me to sit straight up out of the water with a gasp! The water had covered my eyes and mouth.

I don't remember what was said, I only remember slipping back into the state of darkness enveloped by the water. This time I saw two people, one man dressed in a sharp ebony suit and the other in a crisp white suit. I couldn't see either of their faces, they were blurred. The Man in Black I could tell was smiling, his Ebony Birds swirled around him.
The Man in White appeared angry, he too had birds. They were of the purest white with little flecks of gold. They surrounded me as if to protect me from the blackbirds.
The two men looked as though they were in deep conversation, at first I could not hear, I only knew a sense of peace. Their words began to come through.

" Just let me have her, she seeks peace from the pain.." Said the Man in Black.

"She is not yours to take, you over step your bounds." The Man in White hissed vehemently.

"She is but a lost cause, what do you care?" The Man in Black mused.

"SHE BELONGS TO ME!!" the Man in White's voice boomed. Light radiated from him as I was no longer laying by myself but my head in his lap, his fingers in my hair, " She is MINE! YOU WILL NOT HAVE HER!!"

The Man in Black so stepped back against what little shadows remained, " She will come back to the waters seeking relief and I WILL grant her wish!",he seethed.

"ALYSSA. WAKE UP!" The Man in White Commanded, I sat up gasping once more from the water. His voice clear in my ears, "Get out! Get out now and do not return to water this night! Go to sleep and stay, I promise you will not endure the pain anymore. Just do as I command!"

I got out of the tub so fast I do not recall letting the water out nor climbing in bed, I barely remember falling asleep...
As I woke up the next morning I felt a little better. Thinking back to the last night I had to question, was that real? Or was I delerious?
Had I witnessed two entities as old as time fight over me or was I so exhausted I was seeing things?
Was it Real?

*THE END*
