Dinner at the Sadler's
DISCLAIMER: This is a work of fiction. All characters are original and are owned by me. Any resemblance of anyone, living, dead or. . . otherwise, is purely coincedental and unintentional.
I met the Sadlers at school…sort of. Ben and Michelle had only just been married in early June and had driven all the way from the Boston area, to Minot North Dakota in September. I had been out there two years before they came out. I had met Michelle almost three years ago through a mutual friend. She was gorgeous then, now I would say ‘stunning’. They left school after one semester when she discovered she was pregnant. After another year, I was finished, I came home as well. We’d stayed in touch, over the year and became even closer friends as time went on. Three days before my 27th birthday, my phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Hey Curtis, it’s Michelle,” the soft, cute voice said.
“Hey Michelle, how goes it?” I smiled as she let out a little laugh.
“So, Ben and I were thinking about having you over for dinner on your birthday,” she said.
“Ummm, okay, sure, sounds good, thank you,” I answered, not quite sure, what to say.
“’kay, how‘bout seven?”
“Seven sure. Can I bring anything?”
“No, it’s your birthday, just bring you.”
“Okay, see you then.”
“M’kay bye,” she said and hung up the phone.
On the appointed day, I made my way to the Sadler’s. Michelle opened the door with an ever present smile and I stepped in. Instantly I realized their kids were gone, except for the 11-month old slept soundly in the playpen in the living room right next to the dining room, where the table was already set.
“Where’re the kids?” I asked. The kids loved me like an uncle and I always got onto the floor and played with them.
“They’re over at a friend’s for the night,” Ben said coming into the room. He extended his hand and I grasped it and shook it firmly.
“Okay boys, dinner is served,” Michelle called our attention to the food, already on the table. The dinner was simple: spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread and a ceaser salad. However, anything Michelle made was always delicious. We chatted and had a good time and laughed. Eventually, there was an awkward pause.
“Curtis, earlier you asked why the kids weren’t here…” Michelle said hesitantly, looking at her husband.
“Both Michelle and I have seen the way you look at Michelle,” he said. I started to squirm, suddenly extremely uncomfortable, as you can imagine. Ben continued, looking lovingly at his wife “We’ve decided that…ummm…”
“We’ve decided that you can do whatever you want to me,” Michelle said.
“As long as I can watch,” Ben said.
