Haunted (Nevermere Prologue)

This is just a prologue introduction to my newest line of writing as well as my new lead character to the reboot of the Shadowlands universe, this is the Faeyr-replacement character. That is, if anyone even remembers Shadowlands. I took it down ages ago.

Haunted

Dorian entered his apartment only to freeze half way through the threshold. He took a moment to sigh in resignation before he finally stepped through. The brunette quickly closed and locked the door behind him with perhaps a bit more force than necessary. As he slowly entered the kitchen, Dorian glanced around his flat with purpose. He carefully kept his eyes locked straight ahead while he saw with his peripheral vision. His gaze stopped short at the end of the kitchen, just to the left of a shadowed corner.

"You do know how this will end, right? I don't know why you don't just give up already," Dorian spoke to thin air, which seemingly made no reply.

"Alright, well. Guess we're doing this the hard way... again," Dorian said as he huffed out his second sigh of the day.

Dorian made his way over to the kitchen window. A pile of books that had rested firmly and securely in the middle of the table crashed to the floor loudly behind him as he went, but Dorian paid it no mind.

"Throw as many fits as you like," Dorian muttered dismissively as he reached and slid open the window.

After that, Dorian walked back over to the cupboards and opened the middle one, only to discover it was empty. Dorian's lips thinned and he huffed again, more loudly than previous, as he crossed his arms irritably.

"Oh, now you're just being childish," Dorian grumbled, "You know that won't stop me."

Dorian pulled out the small 'emergency only' pouch the he kept attached to a leather cord from beneath his shirt, then pulled out the lighter and stick of sage the lay within. He had to flick the lighter several times and repeatedly hold it up to the sage to get it to burn, since the fire kept violently going out just as abruptly as he'd lit it.

Once it finally caught, he heard an even louder crash from the living room area and the sound of glass breaking.

"You bastard, not the TV!" Dorian cried in outrage.<p>

Dorian held the sage stick out and waved it around with irate purpose as he moved fast through each of the rooms, until they were all full of the thick, acrid smoke.

When he had finished with the last room Dorian commanded, "Leave! You are not welcome here!"

Many more of his possessions fell to the floor and broke along the way as Dorian weaved a path back through the house to the open window, which he pointed to and snapped, "Out!"

He tilted his head to the side a moment to listen in the once-again silent room, and he suddenly snapped, "Sure, maybe I would've agreed to that earlier, but you should have thought of that before you broke the telly! Now I'm not feeling generous OR grateful so you can just shove it up whatever goes for an arse on you and GET OUT."

Several cupboards and doors across the apartment banged open or shut loudly, the elderly man who lived upstairs above the loft banged and yelled about the noise; but finally with one last loud bang, the window slammed shut. The glass cracked but it didn't actually break this time.

Dorian just sighed again and rolled his eyes, then walked back through his apartment to survey the damage. He managed to find the contents of his kitchen cupboard, torn to shreds under the bed. Of course. He let out another sigh and threw himself on top of the bed.

Replacing the shattered remains of his stuff could wait until later.
