The Wait
The Wait
By Heinrich Gothrykke
It was surprisingly heavy in her hand. The grip felt good; tight and rounded, a perfect fit. She had never thought to hold anything quite like it. Surprisingly, the desire to even own one had never crossed her mind. Yet, now that she was actually holding it, she definitely understood the appeal.
Yes, a .357 magnum was a beautiful piece.
Carved steel and hard-molded plastic, the idea of the parts were simple. Once assembled, though, they took on a whole new meaning. It felt like judgement in her hands. The mere act of holding it gave one power. Balanced towards the barrel, she had to tilt it back when aiming to get an accurate shot.
The first time she had fired the gun had startled her badly enough she nearly dropped the weapon. The instructor had warned her the gun would kick back. That had been an understatement. At least he had warned her not to touch the barrel. Burning her finger tips when she needed them to pull the trigger was not a good idea.
One thing no one had warned her about was the smell. It stunk terribly. Firing the gun once had singed her nose and made her eyes water. Repeated shots numbed her hands to the wrist and nearly gagged her. The stench of burned carbon and sulfur was something she would never forget.
There were a lotta things she would always remember.
She could recall her first kiss with perfect clarity. The night had been cool from an early spring storm, Danny had soft lips. It was a special moment that she would cherish for the rest of her life.
When she met Lyle, she had continually glanced at the clock. Every time he smiled, her heart would flutter and it made her lower back tingle. She needed to know the moments to remember. Time had flown by, even with her marking the seconds. His laugh, his beautiful green eyes, his hair like dark chocolate, everything about him that night had been perfect. She hadn't wanted to forget a single minute of it.
At the end of their date, he had escorted her to the door like a gentleman. She hadn't been able to let go of his arm. Not that he had noticed, since he hadn't tried to release hers either. Then, when she had pulled out her key, he had leaned in. The tickle of his breath against her cheek made her shiver. They were both grinning like fools when he went to steal a kiss.
It had been perfect. She could still feel the gentle, barely there touch of his lips against hers. His lips had been slightly moist. He had been nervously licking them all night. Her chapstick stuck to them when he pulled away. It had been so ridiculous seeing him with purple stains on his lips, she had been so giddy, that she had ruined the moment by laughing. Every moment of that night had been absolutely wonderful.
When he purposed six weeks later, it had come as a surprise to no one. Sure, everyone had made all the right reaction noises. Both their families and friends had been extremely happy for them and they had to go out to celebrate it multiple times. The next six months had been a whirlwind she could barely recall.
Her wedding day had been the exact opposite of their first date. Everything that could go wrong, had. She had deliberately forgotten most of the details. All she could recall now was this vague unsettled nervousness that was punctuated with anger at the imperfections. Lyle had made that night all better, though, and that was what she remembered now.
Lying in their bed, she sat curled against the headboard. His pillow was laid out beside her, a few blonde strands of hair still clung to it.
Tonight, she wore that black bra he had bought her, saying it matched her hair perfectly. He loved the silky texture against his cheeks. The panties were her idea. They matched the bra perfectly, tight and sleek enough to show every curve and fold. She wanted him to see her and remember.
This night would be perfect. She had planned everything down to the last detail. There were candles in the kitchen, leading down the hall to their bedroom. She wanted him to see and follow them to her. He would be in for such a treat when he saw her posed their against the headboard.
She could picture him now. He would be in his suit still from work. The tie would be undone, strung across his shoulders instead of around his neck. The top three buttons of his shirt would be undone, his jacket over one arm. Lyle worked hard, he liked to play even harder.
He would come up the hall, lit only by the candles, and he would smile. He loved it when she got romantic. When he pushed in the door, that familiar grin on his lips, his brown hair hanging in his eyes, he would get the biggest surprise of his life. It was a sight that was well worth the wait.
A quick glance at the clock told her it wouldn't be long now. And right on cue, the hum of his Mercedes pulling up in the driveway could be heard.
Turning to the bedroom door, she struck her pose. She knew how to do it from many hours of practice. The most important part was to hold it with both hands.
