Into the Light, Into the Darkness

A/N: This is the first story I’ve ever posted. Its just the prologue for now and doesn’t really have much to do with the story plot. Just a little stage for characters to start playing on. Tell me what you think(please be gentle).

WARNING: Any warnings I didn’t put in the summary I’ll put here from now on. Also, this is a work of fiction. Any of the stunts read in this fic were preformed by professionals. Do not try at home. Enjoy ;P

Prologue

Oriu, a land of magic and mysterious creatures, created after the gods spun the wheel of time. The population was mostly human, though many other races lived there as well. The Fay from the wilderness to the east, vampires from the northern border, shifters and mages, all lived harmoniously for more then a hundred-thousand years of peace. Akaria, the most vast and powerful empire, was ruled by the humans. It’s lands stretched across most of the southern half of Oriu.

When emperor Therius came to power, all seemed well. To all his people he was a fair and just ruler. He was a good husband, a doting father, and good friend to everyone at court. Therius also had a lover. A lady vampire named Selindia, whom he loved to the point of obsession. She was beautiful and kind, and since it wasn’t unusual for an emperor to take a mistress, she was even considered part of the royal family. No one ever saw the storm brewing behind the castle walls.

After twenty years had past, Selindia grew restless. Though she cared deeply for Therius and his family, she couldn’t suppress the urge to be out on her own again. Vampires were usually solitary creatures, hunters, not meant to stay in one place for long. So the day came when she confronted the emperor about her need for freedom, but he wouldn’t listen. The love of his life wanted to leave him and he couldn’t bear the thought. So he had her locked away until she changed her mind.

He kept her chained in the dungeon with very little blood to sustain her. But she still refused him. So he starved her for a month, hoping to finally break her. At the end of the month he opened her cell only to unleash chaos upon his home. She was no longer the kind woman he knew, but a monster, and had somehow escaped her bonds. Like a whirlwind, she tore through the palace, killing everyone in her path. The guards finally caught her in the royal bed chambers, sobbing in a corner and covered in blood, she no longer fought when they ended her life.

The prince, who had been away in a nearby kingdom, returned home to find his family slain. His father had somehow survived, but was no longer sane. The prince was named emperor in place of his father and with his new power, declared that all vampires within the empire be destroyed. He sent his army across Akaria, but even after all the vampires had been killed or fled, he still wasn’t satisfied. He sent his army past the northern borders to attack the shape shifter sanctuaries that had taken in many of the vampire refugees.

Until this point, the high vampire council had turned a blind eye to the vampires beyond their own territories. But when the sanctuaries within their lands were attacked, they sent their own army. Even though the humans outnumbered them, the vampires crushed the Akarian army. The vampires also believed in the old saying ‘an eye for an eye’, and carved a bloody path of destruction through Akaria, straight to the emperor’s gates.

After the fall of the empire, the humans still refused to submit to the vampires rule. Mages and Fey began to fight alongside the humans, teaching them more efficient ways to fight and kill vampires. Many battles were won with their help, but Akaria was too vast. The vampires split their army and began to attack each of the many kingdoms separately, leaving each to fight on their own.

Slowly, over nearly two-thousand years of war, the kingdoms have fallen. The Fay left Akaria for their homeland in the east, and the mages have almost all died away. The few that remain still fight with the humans in small groups calling themselves ‘hunters’.

With only the hunters to protect them, humans have taken to living in small villages, ready to pack and leave at a moments notice. A tactic that has, so far, helped even the odds against the vampires. That, and the many hard battles over the centuries, have weakened the vampire armies.

This is where the story begins. Two races locked in a stalemate. Both sides waiting for the one thing that will turn the tide in their favor.
