Author's Notes:

I've been writing this thing for about three years now, did most of it during a NaNoWriMo a while back. I've only just gotten up the nerve to start posting it. It's my baby, my first real original fiction, and I'm scared. I love it bunches and I just really hope some people like it too. I had planned for about a three book length series, but that's pretty much up in the air because this first story has gotten so long (100,000+ words as of now). I'll see what happens. But I thought I should start posting it now to get some feedback.

Read the prologue, if you feel like it. It has important background information. Feel free to ask questions too about this world I made and the creatures within.

I'll be putting Author's notes and Update info in a forum topic I've started so I don't exceed the whole AN limit aff has. Check that out for the most up-to-date info.

Prologue

In the year 2012, humanity was wiped from existence by its own creations of a powerful, toxic biological weapon. In a manner on weeks the entire homo-sapiens species was decimated, their corpses littering the landscape. Their cities fell to ruin and their history was all but erased from existence.

But from the ashes a new society grew. By a trick of mother nature the human gene pool was reintegrated into the world and born as a new species. Over the span of a thousand years, evolution worked its mysterious magic and created something new.

Shape shifting humanoid hybrids.

The carnivores of the Earth became the new template for a dominant bipedal species. Their ingestion of the tainted human corpses after the fall of the homo-sapiens lineage paved the way for a new genetic revolution. Dominated by felines, canines, bears, and birds of prey, the carnivores evolved into a group of hybrid creatures. They had the ability to shape shift from an animal form identical to their ancestors, into a human like hybrid of that animal.

Their human forms kept traits of their animal form like tails, wings and/or ears. Human forms also differed from species to species. Birds of prey were the smallest, standing barely four feet tall in their human form, complete with wings and feathered tails. Bears were the largest, standing at the shortest six and a half feet tall, their bodies thick and large. Canines and Felines ranged within the average height of the once humans, for these two groups of animals had the most varied genetic makeup. At the same time they became very similar to one another, because of that diversity. Most stood between five and six feet tall.

As the Carnivores evolved so did their prey. Prey are stronger, smarter, and more elusive to challenge the evolution of the Carnivore race. Mother Nature always worked to keep things in balance.

The Carnivores rebuilt a society in the shape of the humans before them, but with a greater affinity for protecting and preserving the Earth. They lack a division of language or culture, with a universal language in place as well as a unified structure to their societies. While there is a segregation between species, but they are similar in their rules and religious beliefs. All Carnivores worship Mother Nature as their goddess while every species of Carnivores worships another god beneath her that is the basis for their individual traditions. For the Canines, they worship Luna, the moon spirit that brings fertility and strength to them. The Felines worship Ra, the sun god that brings life and inspiration to them. The Bears worship Fauna, the plant god, a soft and wise spirit that lived in harmony next to creatures. And the Birds worship Gust, the wind spirit, the one who supports them in their travels.

All of the Carnivore species interact with one another, developing trade routes and relations between their cities. Canines and Felines live in large cities with a hierarchical structure. Bears live in smaller villages between Canine and Feline colonies. Birds are nomads, traveling between the other Carnivore groups.

Each species also has abilities they specialize in, which they use to better their entire culture. The Canines prove to be quite skilled at building and creating things that would make civilized life easier to live; like homes, furniture, fabric, and many other useful tools. The Felines are quite creative and entertaining, generating things that would make civilized life more enjoyable; like plays, music, dances, and other arts. Bears were very intelligent, and more connected to the earth than the other species. They became the scientists and doctors, the philosophers and theorists, the monks and clerics of the world’s single religion, discovering knowledge and putting it to good use. The Birds became historians and storytellers, their travels taking them far and wide. They are the easiest and safest way to transport information. The Birds built massive libraries in the furthest reaches of the world where they house their vast knowledge and uncountable stories, keeping and preserving artifacts from the once great human civilization.

While interaction was high between the species there are still divisions none dare to cross. Cross species mating was completely forbidden, for no other reason than it seems to go against Mother Nature. Mating is a very sacred act for all Carnivores, and it was limited to just a male and female together.

But boundaries, especially in nature, are meant to be crossed.
