Buried Alive

Gritty, thick, wet with worm slime; sour dirt packs his nose shut.

Scratches across his unseeing eyes.

Crawls down his throat.

Clay, like cement, holds his hands at his sides, pins his legs.

Saps warmth from his skin until his bones ache with cold.

Six feet of earth crushes breath from his chest.

Squeezes down on his abdomen, icy hot pain climbs up his back from crushed kidneys.

Wild and erratic his heart thumps in the dirt mold.

Dirt begins to settle in his lungs, thickening.

Eyes bulge, straining to see through the illusion of white, red, and purple stars.
