Chapter 1

My Cruel Fairy Tale

Chapter 1

Once upon a time... and Happily ever after...

Normally, fairy tale stories would begin and end with these simple words. In Lily's life however, she felt like she was stuck in the middle of a fairy tale scene where everything goes wrong for the heroine before it gets better. Circumstances bound her in a place where she felt like there wouldn't be any happily ever after for her. She'd even settle for a little bit of happiness, but things always seem to rip apart at the seams every time happiness is at her doorstep.

She had been born unlucky.... Or so she was told. Her mother had died the day she was born and was soon followed by her father when she turned 12. But it wasn't long before her father remarried, and she was left with a stepmother, whose favorite past time was to gamble. In turn, she was almost always left alone with the rabbit doll he got from her dad on her 10th birthday.

Things however weren't as bad as it sounded. She became independent at an early age and found herself in love with romantic fairy tales where everyone can find their happily ever after. Her childhood, though a bit isolated, was filled with wondrous joys that the books brought her. She would walk the distance to the library or have her stepmom drop her off, so she would be able to read or check out books for later reading. She was truly smitten with the idea of one day finding a prince that would join with her, hand in hand as they rode through to the sunset. All her dreams and wishes didn't just fall upon deaf ears. Every night, she would cuddle up with Mr. Carrot the rabbit doll and tell him of them until sleep claimed her.

But things change... they always do...

As she got older, she saw reality for what it was. She saw the influences of money, power, and status and how it affected the people around her. So soon enough, everything she held close to her heart, when she was younger, was left in a box in the attic. Even the lovely Mr. Carrot was forgotten and also placed in the same box that she marked as "childish dreams."

It would be years later that she would look upon that same box. And it was only due to the fact that she had decided to finally move out of the house, when she graduated from college and decided to strike out on her own. Her stepmom had been absent most of her life, but she felt loved by her regardless. So the parting was bitter sweet. She was forever thankful that she wasn't abandoned by her stepmom in the years that passed, but things must change again as she set out to leave her childhood home to move to a new place to start a new job.

Things progressed and she was getting haggard. Time had not been kind. She had found out that the job she had set out for was a dead end job and soon found out that her stepmom had passed away. She was forever a changed woman. Now still living in a one bedroom apartment with a dead end job with nothing to look forward to… she turned 45. And as she laid down to rest that day, nothing could have prepared her for changes to take place soon after.

The dawn of a new day had come as quickly as soon as sleep was attained. She was still slightly dizzy from having just woken up, but one thing was for certain. She could hear whispers coming from somewhere in the house. Now slightly more alert than just a few seconds ago, she tiptoed out of her room and peaked out into the living room but found nothing. It was a wonder that she heard any voices at all. Maybe she was hallucinating, but her mind was aware of her surroundings.

The whispers started again, but much clearer this time. She could definitely hear voices, and it did not sound familiar. So armed with a bat and ready to charge, she hurried to the source which turned out to be in the attic. She was slightly surprised to note that someone could have gotten in without her knowledge, but she has seen shows that have portrayed perverts who can do this sort of thing, without being detected.

Gearing up to go, she bursts up the small set of stairs that pulled down from the ceiling and she rushed in screaming like a mad woman yelling a war cry. And once more to her surprise, no one was to be found although the whispers were definitely stronger.

With her guard down, wondering if she really was just a crazy old woman an inexplicable loud thump took her by surprise and sent her sprawling on her butt landing right next to the box marked "childish dreams."

Having forgotten all about the crazy noises, she turned and opted to open the box when a sudden burst of light emanated from the newly opened box only to suck her in and leave no trace of her having been in the attic at all. And when she would wake up, she would definitely find herself once more... changed.
