When the music stopped

Sylence sighed and wrapped his arms around his legs as he sat on his bed. Rainy days were fine, but where it was just gray and dark, his thoughts turned towards the same. It brought him to how he'd ended up as Sylence instead of Sywren.

It had all started when he had sung for his baby brother. Even if he hadn't realized it then. His father's urge to push him to succeed, and then kill him at the height of it.

Sywren's very soft child's voice was clear as he leaned in towards the bars of the crib. Tiny silver ears flicked towards him as the baby listened. He'd heard his mother and father saying something about it wouldn't be long. He didn't really understand it until the day he'd gone over and his baby brother hadn't reached out his small hand for him.

"Momma! Momma!" He cried out, reaching to tug on her skirt. Teary eyes looked down at him before she went into the room where his brother was. He whined softly, his own fox ears back as he realized what was wrong and started crying.

Time passed, he was made to sing at his brother's funeral. From then it just went on. School talent shows, music classes. He'd even been sent to a school that specalized in music. Sywren hadn't really minded. He loved to sing and these people liked hearing him sing.

It was hard too though, his father making him go to the school's final competition on the day of his mother's funeral. He had claimed that she had just been sick, but Sywren never really believed him.

After the last day of school when he was sixteen, Sywren had been immediately moved to professional level. A scout had been at the competitions. Something that he enjoyed was being turned into work. It was hard to be resentful though, with the letters and such he got that loved him and said he had helped them. If he was helping others, it wasn't so bad that he didn't have time to make friends with any of them.

He was drug from his musings by wire coming around his throat from behind. His hands came up instinctively, clutching at it and trying to keep it away.

"I'll kill you now, then everything you've ever done, touched, or seen, will be worth so much more." His father, his manager, growled at him.

Sywren gasped for breath, his fingers curled around the wire around his neck. It was barely enough to keep it from slicing into his artery. Clouded silver blue eyes stared at nothing as the garroting wire tightened.

He could feel blood running down his throat and fingers as black started to take over his vision. His fingers loosening but still caught between the wire and his neck. A sound caught his attention and that of his father. He couldn't even manage to turn his head to look before his father had let go and ran off and left him in the dark alley. He blacked out before he saw anyone.

But someone had saved him, took him to the hospital. He'd been treated but the damage to his throat had been too extensive. He'd shrugged it off at the time, but he was starting to miss being able to sing or talk. His ears were flat, tail curled around his legs as he sat on his bed. He couldn't help but keep dwelling on it as he stared out at the dark sky.
