Rumors
Emeralis gave a mental sigh as he looked out over his class of college students. He'd hear snippets of conversation about himself and try to not remember how rumors just like them had turned his first, and so far only, mate against him.
He'd been many things in his long life. Lazy dragon, pirate, aristocrat, thief, and now a teacher. Rumors, gossip, had followed him. People were always talking about other people, never thinking about what they could be doing to them.
Dismissing his class he rubbed his forehead and closed his eyes. Without even noticing it he fell asleep as he was thinking about the past.
His mate had been human, and so very calm and cool. It had soothed his at the time hot headed nature. And while not gorgeous, had a quiet beauty about him anyway. Emeralis had spent time getting to know him, doing whatever he could to get the other to pay attention.
The mate mark had been faint, but strong enough he could find the other. He'd wondered about it, and his mate's increasing distance between them. Never wanting to talk about having a family, always coldly turning away.
Not long after they had mated, someone in town had found out. Rumors started and Emeralis had no idea how seriously his mate was taking them. When he had finally called him on his distant attitude, his lack of caring, he'd been shocked at the frozen tone of voice.
All the accusations, the way that his mate had seen what had happened, had shocked him into stillness. That he had been seduced and only mated with Emeralis out of fear. Fear that if he didn't he'd just end up dead. Now he heard more things, that any child they had would kill him on its way out. That EMeralis only wanted him for a child, or that Emeralis would eat the baby since it was only half dragon.
Emeralis folded his head in his arms, remembering how he'd finally tried to tell him the truth. That his mate hadn't cared at all to hear him. He'd been told he was lying even as his mate started coughing up blood. The need to reach out and help even as his mate rejected his touch. When his blood had hit the air Emeralis could smell the poison.
His heart had already been breaking at the triumphant smile his mate had given him as he hit his knees.
"Take...you..with me..." was the last thing he'd heard before the light had left his mate's eyes and the mark had shattered. The anguish and pain had flung him to his own knees, his head thrown back as he screamed with it. That he would have died not long after that if Amay and Lazriel hadn't shown up to restrain him and help him.
"Teach?" A soft voice interrupted his thoughts, and Emeralis looked up, thankful for it.
"Yes?"
