This is an original work of fiction and the characters are not intended to resemble and existing charaters but they may. I haven't read every pirate novel out there :)
Raised Pirate
Captain Derek Daremal had never been the superstitious type. Not because he didn’t believe in the supernatural, he had grown up in the middle of supernatural. He wasn’t superstitious because he knew the true histories of where superstitions come from. So when pirates say it is bad luck to have a woman on board a ship, Captain Derek knew it’s because men are really scared women will prove to be better pirates. Captain Derek also knew this fear was well
founded and that’s why he had had women serving on his ship since the beginning of his career.
At the moment he had 5 women serving on his ship. Molly monitored the ships maintenance. It was amazing the details she could pick up on. She once heard a snap during dinner that ended up being the mast slightly splintering 2 decks below. Taggy managed the sails and flag repair. She was an artist with a needle and thread. She also came in handy sewing up wounds. Giselle took care of other health needs. Her methods would be called dark magic by some, but if she could hold off the plague and stop an internal infection Derek didn’t care how she did it. She also had come up with a potion that would keep his men from being distracted by the women on the ship. This helped with the other reason women were considered bad luck on ships, they tended to cause fights even among the best of friends. Giselle’s sister had joined them a year ago because their parents died in a plague. Her name was Corina and she kept the men’s appetites fulfilled in other ways.
As Derek reviewed the women in his head he counted four but he knew there were five. He had to think a bit harder to remember the last one. Ah…how could he have forgotten Sailia. Probably because for all intents and purposes she was one of the men. Not because she wasn’t beautiful or feminine but because she could challenge the most skilled of men to a fight and win every time. She also bettered the most wild and driven fighters. She fought with flawless skill and understood every move a person could make. Her most valuable trait in a fight however was her passion.
Captain Derek had convinced Sailia to join them 2 years ago. At the time she was working as a bar maid or at least she appeared to be a bar maid until a fight broke out. She was in charge of keeping the peace in the bar and she did it very well. Only new comers would dare pick a fight in O’Benally’s Bar.
Derek smiled as he remembered that night at O’Benally’s
“Well men it was a good haul.” Derek said, raising his glass to toast his men.
“Good Haul? We had to leave half behind in fear of sinking the ship!” Jake, Derek’s first mate, exaggerated.
The men of Derek’s crew were celebrating a rather large find of a treasure said to have already been found. Derek had a feeling it was still there since the pirate who said he had found it was dirt poor, he was right. It was found now and paying for the whole crew to have a night off. They all raised their glasses to cheers when shouts came from across the bar.
“I’ll rip your throat out!” one man yelled.
“Dead men shouldn’t make threats they won’t be able to keep!” another yelled back.
Both men had their swords pulled and an additional blade in their other hand. The other men in the bar yelled back. Some moaning that they were ruining the night, others egging the argument on. Derek looked to the door for the bouncer but couldn’t remember seeing any security brute when they came in. As Derek looked back towards the fight the bar patrons rushed for the outer walls. Derek craned his neck to see what had happened. If the men had begun to fight the night would be ruined. The bartender would surely kick them all out. Instead he heard a woman’s voice.
“Alright guys we’re done here.” She said in a strong matter of fact way.
One of the men nodded and stepped back to join the rest of the crowd. The other man kept his defensive stance, not too happy with her intrusion.
“He called my hat “feminine”!” The man spat back at the woman, “He will pay!”
“Aw… now what’s wrong with being feminine?” The woman flashed a stunning smile and batted her eyelashes.
She struck a pose with her hips jutting out to the right and her hand on her waist. Derek followed the curve up to her supple breasts. She was a very well filled out woman, like most of the bar maids. As Derek tracked her body back down to the floor, she vanished. Well not literally but she moved so quickly he couldn’t follow the movement. She kicked the man’s sword out of his hand up into the air and caught it before Derek’s eyes and mind could make sense of what had happened.
The man looked just as confused; he even still had the smile on his face left over from looking her up and down himself.
“Hey!! That sword belonged to my father.” The man whined at her.
“How cute you use your father’s sword and wear your mother’s hat.” The women laughed.
The rest of the crowd laughed along with her but Derek saw the man lung for the woman with his remaining blade. Derek stepped forward to help but stopped dead in his tracks. The woman had leapt out of the way just as quickly as she has retrieved the sword. She flicked the man’s blade off course with the slightest movement of her wrist yet somehow kept the tip of the sword in line to meet the man’s throat.
The crowd cheered and started chanting “Sail-ia Sail-ia”. Derek got the feeling this wasn’t the first time this women had bested a man. The man tried to swipe at Sailia again but her right foot came up and kicked the blade across the room.
“Now didn’t I say we were DONE?” Sailia lunged and stared the man down.
His eyes creased as he tried to hold his own in the stare down but she only had to cock her head to the side slightly and he backed off. Sailia flipped the sword around in a fancy flare and offered the hilt back to the man.
“Let’s keep daddy’s sword in the sheath until Jr. can use it.” Sailia mocked.
Derek thought the man would pull the sword away and try to make her eat her last words but the man put the sword away as he was told and headed for the door.
“Ok boys you’ve had your excitement, let’s keep the peace on this little spit of land shall we?” Sailia shouted as she walked back to where she had set down a few tankards of rum.
“Sailia show us a canter.” A man yelled hopefully.
“I think you saw enough of my cantering to fill out your fantasies tonight Bill.” Sailia laughed back.
The men made their way back to their seats, and the bustle of the bar took over the silence. Derek was impressed with the respect these men were giving a bar maid. Yes, she seemed to know her way around a sword but she must be pretty damned good to have them all moving out of her way when she steps into a fight
Just then the other man involved in the fight walked by Derek’s table.
“You there..” Derek yelled after him.
He turned and Derek held up a full glass of rum and pointed to a seat next to him. The man came back, of course, tempted by the promise of free rum.
“You backed off that fight pretty quickly. No one show you how to finish a man?” Derek teased
.
“Not with Sailia around, not worth the trouble. Last night two men got into a fight and wouldn’t back down when Sailia intervened. They both turned on her so they could finish their fight, and they both had to be carried out of here. I think one of them lost a finger.” The man said and chugged the rum.
Derek squinted as he looked across the room. He had heard about a fight last night, the man hadn’t only lost a finger he had died from internal bleeding. Sailia didn’t have a mark on her nor did she seem to be limping or hurt in any way. Derek looked back at his first mate sitting next to him. Jake had seen that look before. Derek wanted Sailia on his crew and it was Jakes responsibility to make it happen.
As Derek recalled it was an easy deal. Jake simply had to ask Sailia and she agreed. She must have been itching to get back out to sea.
So that made up the women of Derek’s crew. He was berated for having women on board by other captains, but then he was sneered at for other things too. Derek was a man of the code, the pirate code that is. He followed every rule to the very depths of its meaning. That was due to his upbringing but he also found there were reasons the code was the way it was. The crew respected him because they knew they could trust him for their share of the plunder. They also knew they would be rewarded for good behavior and acts of courage. Jobs were handed out fairly on the ship and everyone seemed to be living the pirate dream. There were disagreements of course, as with having a group of people that size spending so much time together. But that too was handled by the code and if things got too rambunctious Derek could take them into port and set them free to spend their money.
At the moment they were heading back to port to restock the ship and spend a week in the company of rum and loose women.
