Prologue
Neva gasped, lifting a hand to her throat.
The Gaian across from her opened his eyes; “Nightmare?” he asked. The girl nodded and stood to gaze out the window. “Yea… One of those.” For a moment, the two stood in silence before Neva turned to face him. “What are we doing here, Musin? Hiding is getting us nowhere!”
The one named Musin—an 18th-generation Gaian, sub-class: feline; common house cat. He befriended Neva shortly after her escape from the Hyde Complex. He was on the run himself.
Musin offered a little smile; his golden eyes alight with mischief. “At least we still have each other, right? We have to stick together no matter what!” She had this sudden blank look upon her face, but then a grin cracked her sorrowful visage.
They were close—around the same age, even; they were inseparable.
Unfortunately: all good things must come to an end…

“Musin!”
The soldiers had the Gaian trapped, weapons aimed and ready. Neva, on the other hand, was being taken to the commanding officer of the squadron. The teenager was shoved at his feet, where she then struggled to regain her footing. “I oughta—” Her voice was suddenly caught within her throat as she gazed up at the Major.
“You ought to what?”
Major Adrian Vonner. His voice was deep, alluring; he was ‘ridiculously hot,’ as Neva would put it. But he was also insane, unpredictable; he could kill a man (woman or child) without a second thought. He was an Elite—a person free of disease and hereditary nuisances, therefore licensed to breed (such a movement was in attempt to control the population).
Neva swallowed the growing lump within her throat. “Nothing, sir!” The Major narrowed his darkened eyes and took hold of her arm. “Hyde Complex,” he murmured, “So, you’re a lab rat.” She yanked her hand back and glared; “Fuck off, lap dog!” Adrian leaned closer. “I suggest you get in the truck.”
She refused, of course, which led to her being forced into the truck by his men. “Why are you doing this? We haven’t done anything!” Adrian approached the window and tapped on the glass, mocking her; “Curfew, lab rat.”
He never smiled…

“That’s what? Six?”
Adrian continued to stare at the surveillance visual.
“Adrian?”
“She looks familiar…” He paused the feed, zooming in on Neva’s face. The bright red hair, the eyes of vivid green; so full of life.
Krista…
He stood from his chair. “You’re dismissed,” he said, “I don’t want to be disturbed for the next hour.” The other man nodded, departing the room without hesitation, leaving Adrian alone to stare out at the young girl they had captured moments ago.
As he stood by the double-sided mirror, a moth landed upon the sill, fluttering her wings. Krista always did love those things. Adrian gently lifted the insect onto his fingers and watched as she climbed along each digit. His gaze returned to Neva, then.
“Why do you haunt me?"
