It was the Fourth of July weekend and the Will-e-Mart was filled with shoppers trying to buy forgotten things last minute. There were several lines with two or three customers in them. In one of these lines a tall slim girl, with long brown strands hanging in front of her pale heart shaped face. She stood in a check out line with a magazine in her hand as she waits for her items to be rung up. One of her sandaled feet taps lightly against the floor. A taller young man in the same store walks toward the girl’s line. He suddenly ducks behind another shopper when he sees the girl. This causes the shopper, an older gray haired woman, to glare at him behind thick black framed glasses. He shakes his head as if doing so would remove any nervousness. Then, he takes a breath and walks casually toward the girl.
As he gets closer to her he says, “Mika? Mika Radcliff? Is that you?”
At the sound of her full name Mika turned around and gave a big smile as she recognized the owner of the voice.“Tobie Walker? I haven’t seen you since high school graduation. When did you move to California? What have you been up to?”
Tobie, surprised she remembered him replied, “I’ve been here for a few months. I got a scholarship to a school here. I’m living with a friend right now, but I’m looking for a new place to live. Why did he just tell her that? What have you been doing with your self lately?”
“Oh, I’m not doing to much my self. I’m going to school here as well, and I have a job with my boyfriend on weekends. It’s great that you got a scholarship here. I hope you find a place soon; although it is funny that you’re looking for a place. I’m looking for someone to rent a house with me since the girl that was renting it out with got married. I would like to rent the place with someone I have some history with, but I don’t really know any one here like that yet.
A thought came into Tobie’s head. “What about me Mika? I am looking for some where to live, remember?” Mika looked at him and smiled but then a frown replaced it quickly. “It won’t work out. My boyfriend is a little jealous when I’m around other guys. He’d never like it if I decided to live with one.
Here was the girl he’d loved since she dropped her books on his feet the first day of freshmen year telling him she was looking for someone to live with her.
The only reason he couldn’t move in was because her boyfriend didn’t want any competition. He didn’t know the man, but he already disliked the guy. Then another idea came into his head. The only way he could get his chance to get her to let him move in and it be ok with her boyfriend would be if he were no threat to the guy.
Before he could think much farther or change his own mind Tobie decided to go with the plan and work things out later. “Well that wouldn’t be a problem because I’m not into girls. Your boyfriend won’t have to worry about me trying to take you away from him. I’m gay.”
When Tobie said this there was a pause. Then Mika screamed, ran toward him, and gave him a big hug and moved them around in a small circle. “That’s wonderful. I had no idea, well I kind of guessed but I wasn’t sure so I never asked. I can’t wait to tell Brian that I found a housemate. He’ll be so happy that I won’t have to move. This is so great! Bumping into each other was so lucky”!
This was just great. Just one thing, how was he going to get her to like him in a sexual way if she thinks I’m gay?
Shit!
To late now, I guess. I’m in good with her now. I’ll just have to go with it. I guess I can say I’m bisexual? What did she say about having an idea about! Shit. Tobie just hoped he could keep Mika and her boyfriend from finding out that he was not gay. He was sure he could. This guy was probably some idiot with lots of daddy’s money.
Mika let go of Tobie.
She waited for him to pay for his stuff. Then they walked out together. He helped place the two bags in the trunk of her little Toyota.
“Here is my number and address. Call me tomorrow around two and I’ll tell you what’s up, ok?”
“Yeah, sure I’ll call. See you later Mika and thanks again,” Tobie replied.
Mika got in the car and drove off leaving Tobie in the parking lot looking after her.
Yes, I can’t believe my luck. Someone up there must really like me allot. I got to see about some things.
