Chapter 1

~(word)= traslation~
The streets were crowed with people all talking about the same thing, how the dukes son had run away in the middle of the night and how the presumed cause was Madam Miniato the new young woman who had drawn every mans eye with her elegance. The duke was last seen speaking with her at a small get together and afterwards escorting her back to her home, presumable to have never returned. Thus, every one was ready to storm her lovely estate just out of town and force the duke’s son to return home…and “unfortunately” it is my job to convince them all to stay and leave the little matter of the duke’s son and Madam Miniato to me.
“Please, please every one settle down. This is not a matter that you need to get involved in…we don’t even know if he is with this young Madam. So please let me handle this.” I was standing in front of a rather agitated group of people trying to convince them to trust me; meanwhile this is the first time I ever offered any type of community service or even socialized within the town.
“Why should we trust you? You have never cared before? For all we know you’re in on this whole thing and trying to stop us from getting him back!” said one of men in the crowd. I recognized him instantly and knew why he was worried. He had every intention of trying to marry his oldest daughter to the future duke and make him a pretty penny.
“Yes but this is an out of town matter and could become very messy and involving the town in this unfortunate activity would be ill advised considering present circumstances.” I’m standing there with the calmest face on that I could muster praying that all my years of experience being involved in the woman’s side of politics was finally going to pay off a little.
“She does have a point. Interfering with out of town affairs could be disastrous at the present moment. So why not let the outsider handle the problem? Worst case is she never comes back and we storm the place anyways but with better motives.” This time it was a richly dressed man who spoke, whom I supposed is the duke’s visiting cousin Lord Vincent Marks. I found myself staring into his sparkling blue eyes which clashed with his rich chocolate hair and the red ensemble that he’s currently wearing, which looked surprisingly attractive on him, accenting the fact that he was in fact quite fit….Ugh I need to stop thinking like that, that type of thinking is why I had to move to this dismal town in the first place.
“Thank you for you’re…Confidence?! In me, I will try my best not to disappoint you.” Seeing that the town’s people had seemed to calm down a bit I gave them a small curtsey as I left town hall and headed towards the Madam’s estate. I would have made it there in no time if I wasn’t wearing this floor length dress and trying to keep up my appearances so as to not help my already dismal situation.
The road reminded me of a long abandoned graveyard as I walked down it. Aggressively kicking up the dirt as I went making sure to get just enough dirt into my shoes that it was irritating and uncomfortable whilst at the same time covering the hem of my dress in a nice thin layer of the dark brown dirt. Although it was only mid afternoon it wasn’t very sunny so the shade from the trees almost made it seem like I was walking back to the estate through the twilight hours of the night.
The estate was on the larger side with a rode iron gate that kept the estate separate from the rest of the landscape. The main house is big and in a Victorian style with an ancient weeping willow tree off to the right of the path in the middle of the yard between the gate and the house. There are vines growing up the sides of the house and all over the fencing of the yard. I walked through the gate that was still slightly open, from when I used it last night, and continued up the dirt path to the double French doors at the main entrance of the house, which were crafted from the finest imported cherry wood that money could buy and with pieces of stained glass in the top windows where the glass was missing. The awe-inspiring French doors loudly grown as they open into the whole of the house where you finally notice that the only thing that’s not falling to pieces around you is the main entrance doors.
“Claudia Miniato what have you gotten us into now!” I yelled, as I entered the house. I had a good idea as to where she was and I wanted to make sure she could hear the displeasure in my voice for her stupidity. I could here her laughter coming from the cellar, and made my way there to greet her personally. I opened the door to the cellar and could smell the fresh blood and it was like a feast for my senses, and wondered if he was even still alive or if she had come across a new…plaything, sort of speak?
As I opened the door it creaked and I stepped though to the top step and closed the door slowly behind me making in creak even more and louder. I did so to make sure she knew I was coming down because god knows that last thing I need today is for Claudia to attack me, I slowly made my way down the stairs to the opening at the bottom that we used as a chamber of sorts.
When I finally got to her, she had just finished sucking yet another vast amount of blood from her victim, the duke’s son, but not enough to kill him. She was still wearing the showy black gown from the night before. The gown is sleeveless and so low cut that her luscious breasts are practically falling out of it. Like an A-line dress that’s so tight to her form that it’s almost as if there isn’t a dress there at all and it gracefully falling from her hips to the floor as the gown flares out and freely blows in the wind. The gown is mostly made of Chinese black silk but as you travel down from the waist line the black silk splits into a V-shaped opening with a deep red silk over laid with a simple black lace that just pops out at you. Over her dress is a very elegant looking deep red shale that is hanging loosely between her crossed arms and making a very large swoop down to the small of her back. Her hair is loosely tied back behind her ears, showing off her sparkling diamond chandelier earrings. Her bangs are lightly pulled to her right side and tucked neatly behind her ear. Her blue eyes are accented by the sparkling black eye shadow that she’s wearing and her lips are like tender calm seas of crimson as the light dances across them. Around her neck falling slightly into the top of her jaw dropping cleavage is this sparkling array of diamonds arranged in a descending semi-circle pattern that follows the curvature of her upper chest and bust line. In fact, if you didn’t know better you would think she hadn’t left for the party yet.
“Go get changed and then we’ll talk upstairs.” I watched as she left the room, listened for her foot steps on the stairs and then the cellar door opening and closing signifying that I was alone in the cellar… well mostly, her snack was still chained to the wall and partly conscious.
“What am I going to do with you? I can’t let you go but I can’t keep you here either. Why did you have to be the son of someone so damn important?” with that little tidbit said I loosed the chain so he could rest more comfortably without actually being released. Then I cleaned up some of the blood on him and that had pooled on the floor and made my way up the stairs taking my time on each step so I wouldn’t step on my dirty dress. When I got to the top step I looked back to make sure I still herd breathing at the bottom and opened the door I walked though and closed it before me making sure to hear the click of it closing all the way, when I turned around the only thing I saw was a not so patiently waiting Claudia.
“You ask to speak to me and then I’m the one left waiting. Your being a very unattractive hostess.” to anyone else she would have sounded disrespectful and even smug but the playful smile on her face told me that she was just kidding around. She was wearing a fluttering black mid length skirt and a tight fitting maroon blouse, and even though it would have seemed a tad loose out in society for her it was modest.
“I told you that we couldn’t afford another Bristol incident, and then you go off and make the duke’s son your snack.”
“Yes but if my memory serves me right I had nothing to do with Bristol that was all you Angela dear. But it surly was a entertaining sight to see.” she said it so calmly with a sickly sweet smile on her face the whole time, and I just wanted to smack that grin right off her perfect little face.
“Claudia that is not my point…My point is if we have to move one more time the elders are going to punish us.” I realized I had been pacing in front of her and finally took a seat in a chair across the room from her. We had already been warned by the elders that we were being careless and if we have one more incident we would be severely punished, yet I seem to be the only one of us that actually seems to care what happens to us.
“You worry to much Angela, nothing bad is going to happen…we finish draining the human down stairs, leave the body in a secluded area inside town and then we’re off the hook.” she said it so matter-of-factly that it seemed odd; the more I thought about what she had said the more I realized why it sounded odd. That was what we had done a million times before with our other snacks. It had worked all the other times but they were all nobody’s, this time we were talking about royalty, easily missed and very well known thus harder to miss place.
“No that wont work this time he’s too important…we could convince him to stay and marry you and make a public announcement declaring the engagement and then move.” After voicing my plan I felt bad that I always force her to get engaged, and with how many fiancés she’s had you would think she was a black widow spider.
“Sounds interesting… Can we actually have a ceremony this time?” I was surprised to hear her interest in my plan; I would have thought she would be against the whole idea.
“Umm…sure what ever you want Claudia… now go play nice with your snack and make him fall head over heals for you, ok?” she nodded her head excitedly and then ran down to the cellar, she never did cease to amaze me. I slowly made my way down after her figuring I would give her enough time to flirt with him enough that when I came in he was fully convinced he at least liked her. By the time I reached them he was unchained, cleaned up but still barely able to stand. She looked extremely pissed; the last time I saw her like this she almost killed me.
“What’s wrong? You look upset.” I went over to William, the dukes son, to see if he was dying or something but he was just a little out of it from to much blood loss which wasn’t serious. Claudia’s eyes followed me the whole time as if watching her pray, waiting for the perfect time to pounce
“He doesn’t want me anymore not since you showed him so much kindness“. Now he has only eyes for you, you always get the ones I really like they always like you better! For once can you let me have something I want!” she went to go slap me but stopped inches away from my face and gave a raging huff, she turned on her heel and went storming up stairs, her pounding footsteps on each step and the ending slam of the door causing the house to shake a bit.
When I looked back at William he was kneeling on the floor in front of me looking like he wanted to kiss my feet.
“I apologize if this sounds to forward of me but you are the woman I dream about and I will have no one but you be my wife. So please except this token of my affections.” he lifted his right hand which was closed in a fist and opened it to revel a gorgeous ruby necklace that sparkled even in the dark and hung stringed together with strings of gold, the end of each line of ruby’s was exactly the same so that when worn it made a perfect circle around your neck. It was a necklace I realized that he had shown Claudia once and ever since then she had dreamed of owning.
I took it from him but refused to put it on insisting it should be worn with something nicer and told him to wait down there while I went back up stairs to tend to my sister. As I climbed the stairs each step made me feel worse, I mean sure last time I stole a man from her I wanted him but this time I don’t even like William. As I opened the door I could see Claudia was mad, there was broken glass every where with the accent of a few roses that were tossed with the now broken vases. I heard her crying off in the distance so I walked past the mess in the living room and into the den where I found her laying on the red velvet love seat with her head buried in one of the two black velvet pillows.
There were no sob covered words just inky black tears streaming down her face and collecting at the bottom of her chin.
“Claudia dear I had no intention of steeling William away from you I promise. I have absolutely no interest in him at all” she wiped the black liquid from her face; I could still see she was still mad at me but was also feeling the pain of the hit to her pride.
“What’s so special about you?! What do you have that I don’t have! What!?” she was starting to cry again I could see the bottom of her eyes darkening as the liquid began to pool.
“Claudia there’s nothing about me you know that. I’m really sorry about this you know that right? How about you can still feed on him and I’ll stay far away from all the next ones how’s that work for you?” my hand went up and started fixing her hair, putting it back to perfection when she reached over to the side table and grabbed a handkerchief. She began dabbing her eyes and cheeks making sure not to mess up the make up she took all of two seconds to put on.
“As long as you keep your promise. Then I guess I’m not mad at you anymore… besides that means you have to get engaged for once. Oh I cant wait to see you with a rich snack around your arm, this is going to be so much fun.” she had a huge grin on her face as she got up and patted me on the back, making sure I could hear the little laughs that escaped her mouth every so often.
She had to say the one thing that I never wanted to here that I had to play human, that I had to take something so significant to them and play along with it. The worst part is that I wouldn’t even be having fun with it, at least Claudia enjoyed the whole thing but I couldn’t stand it, to me it as just another reason for the old women to gossip and for the men to brag, Completely pointless in society and life.
Back in the cellar William is still kneeing on the damp floor mumbling little nothings to himself. “Oh where has my shining star gone? I can still smell that heavenly rose perfume that seemed to just radiate off of that breathtaking and mouthwatering body, and those eyes those glorious eyes of hers are just burned into my mind. How I long for her to come back to me, to move those lush legs of her down these dismal stairs and into the dark and dank cellar to brighten this hell of mine, that I’ve been so abruptly thrown into, and bring me into heaven where my fair maiden and I are hand and hand walking down a country road with delicate wild flowers growing in the fields along the path and swaying in the wind as we pass”. He looks up at the ceiling of the cellar hearing the creaking of movement from the floor above hoping that it is his one true love coming to see him. “Could this be, could this be my goddess? Oh please God let this be her”. The cellar door opens and the light from upstairs illuminates the stairs and spills over the railing to make a small arch on the floor just a few feet away from William. Claudia walks down the stairway but stops about have way down and overly kindly says “My sister wishes that you meet her in the parlor.” As she quietly walks back up to stairs and fights to close the cellar door behind her say mumbles to herself, “Yay this is going to be fun, I get to act like her for once and do all the planning.” Chuckling with a big smile growing across her face.
“Yes! My maiden wishes to see me.” William says with a huge smile on his face, stands up and walks up the stairs opens the door and then disappears into the house as he leaves the dismal cellar behind him as he closes the door.
“William dear I’m over here in the parlor.” I was sitting behind a large oak desk, reading over some papers. When William came though the door, my eyes never left the paper as I spoke to him.
“William dear you say you love me yet you barely even know me.”
“I feel as if I have known you my entire life. I love you more then life itself, please my goddess believe me.” he was standing right in front of me now, palms flat on the desk trying to capture my attention.
“Then prove it.” He walked around to the back of the desk where I’m sitting and kneeled in front of me he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. He opened the box and presented it to me, inside was a gold ring, the band was thin and elegantly shaped to emphasize the rather large colorless diamond in the center it was surrounded by smaller diamonds that were equally impressive. It was a ring unlike any other that I had seen
He took the ring out of its box and reached for my left hand, I out stretched my arm placing my hand in his and he slipped it onto my ring finger. As soon as he let go of my hand it felt like there was a enormous weight on my hand and when I looked down at it I could feel a hole in my chest beginning to open.
“I need to speak to my sister can you wait in the living room please.” He shook his head yes and got up before he walked away though he leaned over and took my hand in his, he brought my hand up to his lips and gently kissed it. He then released my hand made a quick bow and walked out of the room.
Not but two seconds latter Claudia walked in a huge grin on her face already, telling me she saw the whole thing and couldn’t wait to celebrate.
“Claudia since I must marry William I refuse to do any of the norms and if you would like me to participate then, you must do the work yourself understood.”
“Then does that mean you want me to be your maid of honor?”
“If that’s what you want to call it then yes.”
She must have been happy about that because as soon as I said yes she ran upstairs with a squeal of excitement; she went up the stairs so fast that I swear I only heard her feet in the stairs twice. I sat back down in my chair with a sigh and looked at my ring finger one more time the ring still leaving an empty feeling in my heart but the weight that I had felt at first was slowly going away. I was deceiving this poor man, tricking him into believing I was his one true love having him marry me. I was taking away his life and he doesn’t even know that I am that I’m killing him, taking away his real chance of happiness.
Now he was probably telling all his family and friends about me how he had fallen in love with me and was going to marry me in the weeks to come. Wonder how happy people are to hear his announcement, probably a lot of very unhappy people right now. I picked up a letter I had been avoiding reading for a few days now it was addressed to me alone from Rome no other name just Rome and I knew it couldn’t be good. I delicately opened the envelope and took out the letter and unfolded it, as I read the letter my face drained of all color, my eyes grew larger and larger until the letter finally fell from my hand and floated down to the floor.
