Cages.
That was the common sight of the humans in 2187.
In 2053 the governments tried their best to adapt their people to the climate change. The predicaments of the global warming were far kinder than the harsh reality of a dying planet. Soon the lands were flooded with all kinds of deserts. Species outdid themselves to survive and adapt to the dramatic rise of the temperatures. Carnivores, scavengers and monsters of disproportional sizes appeared, reports covering half the world. The leaders tried to contain the atrocities. Armies were built to crumble right after; the beasts were stronger, faster and thirstier for blood. The population was instantly decimated to insignificant millions. Havoc, insanity, and crime spread like a thick web, killing a bit more of what little things resisted. The flora withered, the water was scarce.
Thus an idea was created.
To live underground.
It was finally put to use when the sky darkened to a smudgy orange from the toxicity of the earth. People were dying, others went mad as their brains were attacked by the deathly poisonous air. Nonetheless, the underground cities were an instantaneous success, developing their own oxygen producers, small black boxes called the XS series. Towns were built around groundwater structures, cultivating food in highly specialized places. Humans were once again happy and quickly gaining their lost confidence.
But it was never enough.
The more they build, the more they needed. So against all laws, the powerful and almighty enslaved all humans to 6x6 cages when the space was too little and the numbers too much. Half of them died from diseases, others from expeditions to the outside world, forced as “volunteers” by scientists who wanted to study the new species. They were eaten by whatever being found them first.
Humans understood their mistake too late, regretting it as they were abused by many, like lambs to the slaughter.
Now, many generations after the Apocalypse, slaves only knew that kind of life and one boy was born in the middle of this. Born from a moribund mother and a faceless father, how can a clueless boy carry the burden of saving his people without being crushed?
