Hold Your Breath, Take a Chance
"Once Upon a time..no no....I don't want it to be a typical fairy tale...lets see...Long, Long ago...no...Many Years Ago..Damn!"
The single blue eye focused blearily on the piece of paper containing many scratch outs, whited out words, and smudges from an eraser being repeatedly drawn over it. The other eye, a pale green, was closed, making its owner squint slightly. She was exhausted, and no less moody. A cup of cold coffee sat beside her and as she raised it to her lips, the bitter taste made her shudder. She set the cup far out of reach and continued to examine her paper. It was due in no less then three days and so far all she had was a title. With a sigh, the young woman set her papers aside for a moment and rubbed her eyes tiredly. From downstairs she could hear the muffled sounds of her roommates argument with her current boyfriend. She wasn't sure if the fellows name had been todd or spike...there had been so many of the damn guys. After a minute there was a satisfying thump as the front door closed and the sound of a car engine starting up outside. She listened for a moment, then glanced up as her door flew open and Charlene came in, and promptly threw herself down on the bed, upsetting the many stuffed animals that had been neatly arranged at the foot. She cast a dramatic look around the room then sighed loudly. "Oh, Saturn, I know not what to do any longer. Thomas just left and he's SUCH an asshole!" Saturn looked at her long time friend for a minute, considering her words carefully before she spoke. But she had barely opened her mouth when the young woman let out a small scream of frustration, causing the hamster in the corner to pause in its futile attempts to run away on its wheel. Saturn blinked slowly, and opened her mouth again but was once more interrupted. "I mean..HOW does he expect me to take him back when he cheated on me..CHEATED Saturn..with another girl just because she has a larger chest then me? I mean...he never cared before".
Saturn glanced down at her own ample chest, but decided to say nothing to the fact that her friends boy toy had also come onto her. Only after she had tazed him did he back off..but she decided to not mention this. She waited another second then finely managed to get out what shed been intending to say. "It isn't like he's the only man around you know...he seems kinda pervy to me anyhow". She had a soft voice, and it often caused her frustration, particularly when she was on the phone and people had to ask her to repeat herself at least three times. "Im sure you can find someone else". Charlene frowned, hugging a stuffed dragon to her chest and rocking back and forth. Saturn glanced down at her paper once more and decided she wasn't going to be able to think of it for a while now. Charlene was observing her with large blue eyes, still frowning. "Saturn..how come I never see you go out with a man?" Saturn chuckled. "Because...Im busy and haven't time for men. Plus the last fellow I went out with freaked me out. He almost raped me remember?" Charlene's large orb like eyes hardened suddenly. Saturn was such a cheery person and to see her cry and shake and wince every time somebody rang the door bell then scurry to her room and lock herself in for hours had been a horrible thing to endure. After awhile she unfurled herself and got up setting the dragon down next to a stuffed troll. Saturn got up and rearranged her animals, setting the dragon next to a unicorn and the troll next to a centaur with a bow and arrow. She liked this doll the most. She wasn't sure where it was from, but had found it in a trash heap one day and had saved it. She picked it up and smoothed the yarn tail down, smiling slightly. She remembered hugging this particular doll fiercely when her trials had been occurring, seeking comfort from it. Braxton she had named it. She set the doll down once more and sighed, then looked at Charlene who was examining a poster of a wizard in swirling purple robes. "Hey char?" The woman looked at her. "How bout a visit to Cincinnati?" Charlene's face lit up and she quickly snatched up Saturn's car keys. "I'll drive!" Saturn smiled to herself and looked at her collection of mythical dolls. Braxton stared back at her, his dark eyes attention getting. She touched his face gently then turned and shut off the desk lamp. "Be back in a bit Hamilton", she told the hamster softly, before shutting the door.
Hooves thundered across the mossy floor, sending small creatures scattering into hiding. The multi colored hides blended well with surroundings. At the head of the herd a hand was raised. Slowly the many bodies slowed, voices rose in question. The blonde haired male smiled to himself. Home had never felt so nice. "Brethren! We are here! " At the back of the herd two males turned to one another, smiling. "What do you think Akil? Has he gotten a big head since becoming leader?" Akil shifted his weight slightly, his legs bending slightly to work out muscle aches. "He is as good as they get, but there is much ahead of him. We will see how the foul fares when war starts". He looked at his companion. "Though many of us feel it should have been you Braxton whom is leading the herd at this time" Braxton made a face, lifting his hind legs one at a time. " I am not cut out for the leadership role like Harmon is". Akil snorted and stomped his feet. "Nonsense..you are just as good..if not better..then that crazy piebald". Braxton shook his head and gripped his friends forearm. "Some would think so..but whats done is done..he leads...I follow...besides..who wants to be tied down to one mate forever?" They both laughed and soon the herd was moving again, towards a city that loomed ahead of them, its white walls shimmering in the afternoon sun.
Inside the golden gates were many a creature, waiting to welcome the returning warriors. Females came to them, while servants removed their armors and escorted them to baths. "Braxton..Akil". Braxton grinned as a female centaur named Harlow came up to him, looking ravishing" He held her in his arms and smiled. "Ah, harlow, my exquisite mare..I have pined for your company". She giggled and swished her tail. "And I you my love". Braxton winked at Akil, who rolled his eyes and went off to follow a servant to the bath houses. He always felt ill when Harlow showed up. The mare was better suited to be a dog..and a lowly bitch at that. "I shall see you at dinner Braxton..Farewell Harlow..try not to ride the boy to hard. We DID just return". Braxton smirked and allowed the mare to lead him off.
Saturn blinked, barely listening to Charlene chatter on about how she was going to attend a spinning class next week and that Saturn should come with her. "Braxton?" Charlene frowned. "Who? No! I said his names Gerald..and I heard he's single." She sighed. "oh, I bet he's just the dreamiest instructor ever. " Saturn frowned. She could have sworn...no..maybe it was just the stress of her paper. 'But it had felt so real' she thought, thinking back to the great white walls and golden gates. And Braxton..why..he wasn't real. He was just a doll she had been keen to get back and hold when she got home. Something about the stuffed centaur calmed her drastically. Her brow knitted. That Harlow woman had seemed like such a hussy though. "What..you don't think its a good idea to wear my bubble gum shorts?" Charlene was looking at her. Saturns brow cleared and she gave a faint smile. "No...no..sorry I was just...my mind was..I was..no..its a good idea." Charlene eyed her, then smiled. "Good...but I guess I'll have to buy a workout tank huh? I mean not that I have much to hold in according to Thomas..". While her friend chattered on, Saturn sipped her cherry milkshake, thinking hard on what she had just seen. 'Maybe I am getting overly stressed...'
Charlene sighed softly as they walked into the front door, kicking her heels off and tossing them onto the door mat off to the side. "God, I love Cincinnati. The best burgers ever!" She chortled happily. "Well, night girly girl...see you in the morning." Saturn nodded, taking her time as she picked through her mail which she had collected on the way in. She tossed the junk aside and smiled when she spotted her favorite magazine "Into the Mystics" hiding behind a bill made out to her mother. Why that woman still had her mail send here was beyond her. She tucked the magazine under her arm and made her way into her room. Hamilton greeted her by sniffing her fingers when she put her hand into the cage to pet him gently. With a soft groan she sat down slowly, and looked around. "Hold on...what happened here?" Her troll doll was lying on the ground, with what looked like a toy arrow laying next to it. She stared at the doll for a moment then looked around at the other ones. Braxtons doll was sitting across the way, near the large model castle she had constructed as a project in 12th grade for english class. The other dolls were all scattered about to.
The Dragon was near a model of a forest, her knight was next to that, sword in hand. The stuffed witch and wizard were laying on her pillow in what she could only describe as a very complicated looking sexual position. Other dolls were in different spots. "What the hell?" She got up and knelt, picking Braxton up from the floor. She turned it over, looking for the strings, thinking maybe her mother and younger siblings had come over while she was away and the two children had been playing puppets or something. Suddenly she gave a yelp. The stuffed centaur had begun to glow a faint white. His body had heated up. The next thing she knew, everything seemed to have slowed down. The hamster in the wheel was running in slow motion, becoming blurred.
Her eyes grew wide as one by one each doll begin to vanish from its spot around her room. Her room itself was slowly melting into what she could only think was non existance. The first thing she came face to face with was the Dragon. Its scales were a brilliant flare of blue and gold, melding into one another beautifully. Its eyes, a deep amber honey color regarded her carefully before it suddenly opened its mouth. The flames that shot out made her think she was surely going to die, but the next thing she knew something was gripping her arm. She looked around and squealed in alarm. The troll was grinning at her, its teeth sharp and covered in what was undoubtedly old blood. But that to soon vanished. The witch and wizard were standing near by, looking perplexed as they stared at her wide eyed. Someone shouted in the distance and she jerked around. The knight was brandishing his sword, shouting at his horse which was galloping away form him. A unicorn was cantering towards her. It stopped in front of her, bowed, then trotted off. Saturn rubbed her eyes. "Please...I don't understand..just...STOP!" She gasped as she fell forward.
The spinning had stopped just as suddenly as it had begun. She didn't want to open her eyes, terrified of what shed see next. It wasn't until sound met her ears, laughter, talking, yelling, the shriek of children, merchants calling out to possible customers, and birds twittering above her somewhere that she opened one hesitantly. She opened the other slowly, and gaped. Instead of the soft plush red carpet of her room, she stared at cobblestones. Shaking, Saturn forced herself to look around and a gasp escaped her lips. Surrounding her was a city. The white turrets of the distant castle glittered against the blue of the sky, the flags that topped them flapping in a very real, and very warm breeze. Saturns mouth fell open in a round O and she forced herself onto her knees, though a tiny voice in her mind was desperately trying to make her stay put. "My god..."
