Chapter One
He sniffed the air for danger. When he was sure it was clear, he signalled to his pack for them to carry on through the dense forest. Jeremy Watts was a strong, smart leader and he cared deeply for the safety of his pack, his family. He looked over at his mate, Miriam, with her wavy red curls and understanding brown eyes. She was the most beautiful creature on Earth to him, and she carried his unborn child inside of her. The other person who was closest to his heart was his younger brother, Calom. He was small compared to the other males, with a slender build, and it seemed he felt he had to constantly prove his worth by being arrogant and having a typical teenage attitude. Calom was 17 years old, and sometimes he could drive Jeremy insane with his tantrums and arguments with Elliot, another pack member who always seemed to purposefully annoy his little brother.
All of it gave him a massive headache just thinking about it. A soft wind caressed them just then, and brought with it all the scents of the forest beyond. It gently lifted Jeremy’s light-brown hair, in sync with the rustling of the leaves around them. The youngest male of the pack, Mickey, had already moved ahead in excitement but didn’t wander too far. He knew that the Alpha should go first and lead the way on the hunt. Jeremy smiled and stripped his clothes, as did the others, and then they all began to change into their wolf forms, Jeremy waiting to change last so he’d have the protection of the pack as he did so.
Jeremy and Miriam were the first to run off and catch the scent of a deer, pursuing the animal for a while before pouncing on it, the other members of the pack closing in when it was their turn to feed. Midge and Mickey were the last, getting the leftovers but still happily ripping at the flesh still clinging to the dead prey.
When they finished, they gathered in the middle of the forest where there was the most cover from prying eyes, and shifted back into their human forms, blood still staining their pale faces beneath the moonlight. “Do you think many humans will pass through here?” Midge asked as they grabbed the backpacks they’d brought along and got out bottles of water to wash themselves off with. Jeremy frowned in slight worry at the eager edge in her tone, but dismissed it and replied, “I think there will be quite a few, yes”.
“Can we hunt one down every now and then? Not enough to draw attention, just a few” Russell asked, licking his lips as he imagined the taste of human flesh on his tongue. Calom snorted and stared at his gentle brother, who didn’t really agree with killing humans. “Maybe, if you behave yourself while we’re here” Jeremy said quietly, taking Miriam’s hand and stroking her slightly raised tummy. Elliot glanced at Calom, who was gazing at Midge with raw hunger, a gaze that she could feel and was starting to make her feel uncomfortable. She was the only female in the pack that wasn’t taken, and since Mickey was her brother, that narrowed it down to three horny males she had to keep brushing off until she was ready to make a decision.
“I’ll behave, as long as I get to kill a few humans along the way” Russell grinned, his mouth beginning to water. “Can’t we just kill the whole town? Its only a small secluded place, it won’t take long” Calom whined, sharing a grin with Russell, but scowled when Jeremy gave him a sharp look and Elliot snapped, “Are you fucking stupid? We have to keep a low profile, otherwise we’d be hunted down like dogs and cut up in laboratories. We can’t draw attention that we don’t need”, Calom snarled at him, tensing to spring at the male who always set him on edge. “Fuck off wimp-boy! We should be ruling those fucking humans, not hiding in the shadows from them” he growled, fingers curling in, ready to change into razor-sharp claws at any second.
“Wimp-boy?” Elliot echoed with a growl of his own, standing up to face him properly, ready for a fight, cowering over Calom by a good four inches. “You two, stop it” Jeremy snapped, getting angry at the both of them with their childish behaviour. They backed away from one another but kept up the intense staring match until Miriam suggested they get back to the hotel.

It wasn’t exactly a great place for Calom to cool down, since he was forced to share a room with Elliot. When they got back, he dumped his backpack and headed for the shower, stripping off and climbing in without pause, sighing at the relaxing feel of the hot water splashing over his naked body.
He cursed under his breath when he heard Elliot walk in to brush his teeth at the sink. “Do you mind? I’m trying to take a shower in peace here” Calom snarled as he peered around the shower curtain, glaring at his tall black-haired roommate. Elliot ignored his hostile eyes and grinned around his toothbrush, giving him the finger through the mirror reflection. “Fuck you” Calom muttered and returned to the hot spray of water, hoping Elliot would hurry up and go so he could start washing himself without worrying about his least favourite pack member staying in there to annoy him.
When he’d finished his shower, Calom dried off and hung the towel on the metal pole, and got dressed in his old comfy Ozzy t-shirt and some boxer shorts. He then brushed his teeth and plodded out through the room to the balcony, grabbing his cigarettes and lighter from the table on his way.
He leaned on the rail and lit up, inhaling deeply and blowing out a little smoke, looking up at the moon that was half full. Calom frowned when he sensed Elliot coming up behind him, “Hurry up and finish, I want to go to sleep at some point and I can’t with that horrible smell blowing in here” Elliot said with disgust, nose wrinkling as if to prove his point. Calom sighed and flicked some ash onto the street below, “Just leave me the fuck alone for once will ya?” he growled, green eyes narrowing at the other male as he looked over his shoulder at him.
Calom took as long as possible to finish his cigarette before returning inside and locking the balcony doors, and then he turned off the light and climbed into his single bed, rolling his eyes at the sound of Elliot’s soft snoring.
It wasn’t long after Calom fell asleep that he began dreaming;
…A dream of burning silver, blood soaking the forest floor, his own pale hand reaching out towards his brother who was running towards him with a look of horror on his handsome face. Then he was in bed, soft and warm and safe, with a body lying next to his own. He turned over with a smile, and froze when he saw that is was Elliot, who rolled on top of him and pinned his arms above his head. “Calom…I know you want me…” Elliot’s lips didn’t move, but it was his voice that whispered the words, and they echoed around the room like they were bouncing off the walls. “What are you doing?!?” he demanded, struggling in the iron-grip on his wrists, glaring up at the other with confusion and anger. Elliot grinned, his teeth beginning to sharpen, and then he flipped Calom over onto his stomach. He struggled even more as he heard the ripping and popping of flesh and bones, knowing that Elliot was changing and what he was about to do. “No! Stop! Don’t!” he shrieked just as Elliot bit down on his shoulder…
Calom cried out in terror just as he landed with a loud thud on the floor, tangled in bed sheets. Elliot was already up and staring down at him with a mix of concern and amusement. “What’s up? Have a nightmare?” he asked, seeming genuinely curious. Calom scowled sulkily and stumbled to his feet, waving Elliot’s hands away in frustration when he went to help him. “Yes a nightmare, go back to bed” he replied, still a bit shaky from the vivid images imprinted on his brain. It made him scared to go back to sleep.
“Wanna talk about it?” the older wolf asked softly, putting a hand on Calom’s shoulder as he lay back down. Calom shrugged him off and snapped, “No! Just…let me get back to sleep and mind your own business”. Elliot watched him for another long silent minute, and then trudged back to his bed, still eyeing his roommate with a look that clearly said he knew there was something seriously wrong, but he eventually lay back and went to sleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Calom, however, stayed curled up under the sheets and tried to make sense of the strange dream that had terrified him so much.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I can’t believe Calom sometimes, he always has to whine about something, and Elliot always has to make it worse by provoking him further” Jeremy sighed, running a hand through his hair as he thought about the trouble-making males. Miriam was sitting on the edge of their double bed, brushing her thick soft hair as she watched her mate pace back and forth in agitation.
“Keep calm my love, they’ll come to mature in a few years, you just have to except that they are going to be like this for a little longer” she tried reassure him, fighting back an affectionate smile. Jeremy nodded, though he still looked doubtful, and then stripped off his clothes and climbed into bed. Miriam put the brush on top of the little set of drawers beside their bed and slid in under the sheets next to him, wearing nothing but a thin flowing, white night-dress. Jeremy put his arm around her, curling his body round her soft pliant figure, kissing her neck lovingly. As they fell asleep all warm and cosy together, Jeremy put his hand on her swelling tummy protectively, unaware of his brother’s despair and confusion in the next room.
