Waiting Room

All right my fellow people I’ve been writing this story in my head for years now so enjoy.

Chapter 1

Waiting Room

"You look like shit," Whoever said she looked that bad; he was equally shitty looking too. The dirt on his face was smeared. His tears had paved a road on his face. He was covered head to toe in dirt. Everyone who was contacted just stopped whatever they were doing and rushed over. It didn’t matter that he was manning a giant bulldozer, it didn’t matter she was in the middle of a presentation. It didn’t mattered, nothing else did.

She could feel her back cramping. She had hardly moved in the last few hours of waiting. She was so tense. Her back ached and her hands were numb. She was gripping her pant legs and taking deep breaths. Her mouth felt like sand. It was so dry, she swallowed but all she felt was a horrible taste that made her gag. She held back the action as she opened her eyes when she felt a warm hand on her knee.

Lucas crouched in front of her, "Look, don't pay attention to what ever my mother says." Lucas gripped his hands more into her thighs so she could look at him, she was lost. He needed to reassure her, to keep her sane.

"Mel stay with me," Lucas pleaded. The last thing he needed was her to breakdown, enough they had to drug his mother the previous night.

"Lucas,"

His father booming voice made him stand up straight, no matter what, every time the man spoke the hairs on the back of his neck involuntarily stood up.

"Sir," he nodded as he looked past him to see his mother catching up.

"What’s happened?" Maggie asked worriedly. When she woke up this morning, she realized she wasn't where she wanted to be and scolded James and demanded to be driven at once again to the hospital.

Lucas notice how fragile his mother was, the forming wrinkles around her face only proved that time was passing by. Her exuberant golden locks where thinning and changing. He glanced at his father, his once shiny black hair had transformed into a shiny gray. At that moment Lucas feared life.

Mel looked up to meet a worried glare. No matter what Maggie still showed her disapproval of Mel. She could barely make their faces, she had lost her glasses on the rush to the hospital and they stung from the lack of sleep and the tears she shed quietly in the bathroom.

"She's been out of surgery since around six this morning; she has a hairline fracture on her arm. She’s still in ICU; the swelling in brain could throw her into some sort of arrest, so she’s not out of the woods yet."

Mel sighed as she sniffled and stood up, everyone could hear her back pop in three different places.

James touched his wife shoulder and led her to sit down and calm down.

She obliged, the last thing she wanted was getting another shot of Valium. She wanted to be up to date on her daughter’s condition.

Everyone was quiet; the humming of machines and telephones ringing filled the silence between the four individuals.

Mel stood still, after sitting for so many hours. She had to get the blood to run through her legs again. Lucas sat next to his mother whom in turn sat next to James.
The humming of the vending machine lulled the headache Mel was trying to fight off. She felt the throbbing pain came burst through every once in a while. The pressure on either side of her temple was blinding her.

After what seemed an eternity, The double doors swung open, a middle age man wearing scrubs approach them. His beard needed some trimming but with the hospital chaos, it seemed like he never had a chance. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and looked at Mel.

"Miss Diaz, we have a complication," Maggie stood up and intercepted the doctor and Mel. Dr. Mir looked back and forth as Mel nodded.
"The swelling to the medial temporal lobe has gone down, but the MRI shows she has a clot close to the hippocampus. We have two options I give her a blood thinner, but it can cause her to bleed out, her internal trauma is still," Dr. Mir hesitated, "In critical condition,"

"Or," Mel continued.

"We go in with a scope and suck the clot out, but because of the location of the clot, its very risky to open her up again. She's very weak."

Maggie gasped as she covered her mouth. Lucas looked at his dad, no matter what the situation looked like, he had the same serious face, but Lucas knew better than to under estimate his father. He was dying on the inside. All eyes went to Mel.

Maggie spoke, "the blood thinner is less intrusive, do that one,"

The Doctor stuttered, did none of them know, he opened his mouth, and looked at Mel.

"No, do the scope," Mel spoke as Maggie looked at her. She was about to retort, how can she decide what to do. They were family she-

"I have Ellie’s power of attorney."
