Tennessee Line (Daughtry)
Chuck sat in his car, driving down the desolate road that led away from the little town he’d grown up in. He checked his rear view mirror and watched the buildings become smaller. He tugged his hat further downwards not wanting to remember, not wanting to see what he was leaving behind. The way to LA was long, but it was the way to go, the way to what was right.
His car stuttered and he pulled over as smoke started to rise from the engine. He got out, glancing over his shoulder to see if there was another car coming, but all that his eyes saw was the fading light over the little town. His heart ached just looking at the way the sun was sinking behind the roofs of all that was familiar. He turned, eyes focusing on the way forwards and to what needed to be done with his car.
After he’d opened the hood, the smoke increased, something seemed to have busted in his engine block. The night was coming quickly and the chill of the first winds touched the skin of his bare arms. He could push the car back…the sound of an engine made him turn and watch headlights approach. Chuck moved closer to his car, hoping that the guy who was driving wouldn’t be drunk.
The car pulled over behind him though, headlights still on so that Chuck had to squint to see anything. A figure walked towards him, he could make out the outline of broad shoulders and slim hips. The crunch of the gravel under the other person’s boots seemed so familiar.
“Your car don’t want you to go neither.” The deep rumbling of that warm familiar voice made Chuck move towards the other male. That musky scent drew him irrevocably. “Forgive me.” For Chuck the angry words spoken were suddenly gone, the shouts and tears disappeared.
“Matt.” He breathed out the name like a prayer. Warm arms enveloped him and led him back to the other’s truck, the headlights like the welcoming light leading him back home. He was lifted up and placed on the passenger seat, a kiss placed on his forehead. The engine was started and the truck turned around, driving back towards the place he’d run from. Chuck’s eyes flicked to the rear view and he watched his car and the road fade away. A smile curved his lips as a warm hand closed around his smaller one.
“No more running.” He shook his head. The questions, the doubts all of it was gone. Matt had come to get him, no more looking back. This time he was going to make it right, no more wrong turns. “I hope I’ve changed your mind.”
“You have.”
“I love you.” The deep rumbling voice told him as the passed through the quietly sleeping town, where no one had noticed anything amiss. But for the two men in the car, they hearts led them from now on.
