Chapter 1: Hatred

Daniel stood toward the corner of the large Easter celebration. Pastel streamers hung from the ceiling and bright sparkling confetti was spread out everywhere. The hors d’ourves were a festive yet classy selection of top of the line chocolates and caramel chews along with some fruit all in the shape of various animals. There was no bunny favoritism even on Easter. None of those particular amusements caught Daniel’s attentions. His eyes sought the figure of his younger brother, Christopher. The man in question laughed along side with the larger figure of his mate. The pale blush on his brother’s face turned Daniel’s stomach in loops but they halted at the hand on his brother’s hip. With a wince, he took another swig of his beer.

The wave of a hand in his direction made him shake his head. It was bad enough that Jacob showed up to every family event acting as if he’d always been there. The huge Lion clan followed everywhere they went, and he got stuck playing friends with the entire French clan around his own age. Needless to say, his brother was not on the top of the list of people he’d like to invite into his corner hide away.

“There you are, scaredy cat.” Bryan shoved a shoulder into his brother’s. “Stop being so antisocial and join the family.”

“I’m not in the mood to placate the clan at the moment.”

“Then go out there and find yourself a DM. Otherwise I’m doomed to marry one hell of a butch chick.”

“Thanks for the reminder.” Daniel took another big drink.

“Shit Danny. Don’t get all depressed on me.” Bryan clapped him on the shoulder. “I’m sure your DM will be just as sweet as Chris’s and twice the woman Katharine turned out to be.”

Shaking his head, Daniel turned his back to the view of the family. “I’m not interested in settling down right now.”

“Whatever, bro. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed for one hot piece of tail.”

Daniel grimaced at the mention of tail, knowing the pun was purposeful. “Where the hell do you get all of these stupid references?”

“Bon Jour, Daniel.” The melodious voice cut into their conversation. Antoine was yet another person Daniel sought refuge from. While the other man was perfectly polite he was also the stereotypical gay Frenchman. Dealing with the diva took patience that Daniel just didn’t have at the moment.

“Good to see you.” Daniel forced a smile and suffered through the traditional cheek kissing.

“Are you still getting away with that?” A cold voice came to Daniel’s rescue. “I hope he hasn’t convinced you his clan still greets people that way.”

“Not at all, the privilege of family.” Antoine waved a hand at his companion. “This is Phillip Maremma.”

“Pleasure to see you again,” Daniel offered his hand, “Daniel Kurokyou.” In his mind, years of history flashed to a boil. There was no way this wasn’t the same man in front of him.

Phillip took a look at Daniel’s hand and merely nodded a greeting.

Anticipating his brother’s offense, Bryan stepped between the two men. “So you’re a canine clan than?”

“Observant.” Phillip took a step back from the close proximity as if disgusted by the presence of the brothers.

“I didn’t realize the Maremma Clan rejoined the Alliance.” Daniel took a drink of his beer, his eyes locking with Phillip’s as the hair on the back of his neck stood on end.

“I’m touring the event as an Alliance Ambassador.” Phillip responded curtly. The way his lips curled back over his teeth in a forced smile made him look like he was growling. The sharp nose on his face was accentuated by the deep brown of his eyes. The pale blonde of his hair fell forward into his face, belying his European heritage.

“Are you a dominant or submissive DM competitor?” Bryan chatted politely, aware of the building tension in the room.

“I am neither until I am convinced the Alliance has something to offer.”

“Don’t be so formal, Phillip.” Antoine hissed at his friend before a nervous chuckle. “Phillip is just a leery businessman. He does not enter into any contract easily.”

“I understand.” Daniel gritted back a response. “Entering into any contract should not be taken lightly. There are always consequences for not taking one’s duties and obligations seriously. The Alliance may offer a good deal to their members but there are moral and behavioral restrictions that prohibit the dishonorable and the extreme from entering easily.”

“You’re consideration is appreciated, even if it is backhanded.”

Stepping between the two men, Antoine held up his hands to stop the response on either end and was shoved back by Daniel’s large arm.

“Another benefit is that we clansmen all raise our children with enough respect and dignity to interact politely in public.” The empty bottle in his hand pressed into Bryan’s.

“I wouldn’t have known that given your behavior.”

“I have been as polite to you as I can manage which is far more than you deserve. Since you aren’t an Alliance member I don’t see any reason to continue doing so.” Turning his attention away from the other man, Daniel nodded in the direction of his kinsman and turned to walk away.

This time Phillip did growl.

“Watch your teeth, pup. I have the Alliance and two full clans behind my back. You are a guest here with no such connections. A very unwelcome guest.”

“I have never heard of such disrespect to any Alpha before.”

“I am no beta. I am heir to a clan. Whoever was fool enough to elect you Alpha clearly didn’t think before they put a mutt in the position deserving of pure bred.” Daniel rose to his full height and stepped to the man in front of him. His shoulders squared in challenge.

“Hey now, boys.” Antoine inserted a hand between them in an attempt to end the fighting before it erupted into more than just insults. “I don’t think that any offense was meant on either part.”

“Please step aside, Antoine.” Phillips cool demeanor sliced through the air. “I am fully capable of interpreting my own interactions.” His features were smooth and beautiful in the cold passivity.

“Let’s not meet again.” Daniel hissed and stormed away.

Phillip caught the growl in his throat and suppressed it. The dark haired man fled from their conversation taking those fire hot eyes and that silky voice with him. A charming enemy was a deadly enemy.

“Daniel, wait up.” Bryan caught up to his brother and pushed out of the doors into the lobby.

“I know I shouldn’t have lost my temper, but I can’t stand arrogant assholes like that.” Daniel shook his head as if he could shake away the entire conversation.

“Cool, let’s just go and have a few beers then.”

“We have to be back at Mom’s house before tomorrow morning.”

“So we don’t get wasted, we just chill out for a bit. You don’t want to go back to the house right now, do you?”

Continuing on to his car, Daniel ignored his younger brothers constant yammering. The hand on the door frame prevented him from escaping.

“Cat got your tongue?” Bryan looked at him with big eyes and they both laughed; the tension shattered.

“Where do you come up with these jokes? Mom should have smacked you more as a child.”

“Stop changing the subject.” Bryan walked around the car and took the passenger seat. “Let’s go out!”

Daniel let out a sigh even as he turned the key in the ignition.

“Pretty please… I’ll give you my best kitten eyes.” Bryan flashed his eyelashes and clasped his hands together in a mock plea.

“Knock it off already. I’m in.” Daniel turned on the headlights while his younger brother sat back and grinned in his victory. The drive to the bar wasn’t long, but the same tension crept along and hovered with them all the way to the front stoop of the pub.

“So do you want to tell me what’s up between you and Phillip?”

“It has nothing to do with Phillip.” Daniel barked. “Can we just leave it rest for a while? It’s been a really long night.”

“Fine, no serious talk tonight. Just tails…”

“Oh Bryan.”

“That’s what the ladies say too.”

They laughed again and continued to do so even as the bartender slid their beers across the bar top. Somewhere through their fourth round, Daniel was well aware that he was no longer interested in driving home any time soon.

“So tell me what’s up with you and this Phillip guy?”

“Do we really have to talk about this?” Daniel sighed.

“No, let’s just talk about your general prickish behavior for the first half of the evening.”

“You already know that I was once seeing Katharine. Phillip pursued her as well.”

“Oh Katharine, what’s-her-face… the trouble she caused.”

Daniel rolled his eyes. “Yes Katharine what’s her face.”

“So she married Donald what’s his face and all is well.”

“Not quite.” Daniel sighed. “You really don’t remember any of this?”

“I was really busy with my own life you know… that whole getting into college thing.”

“Fine, whatever. She wanted a DM with Phillip. The feeling was mutual.”

“So he got the girl and you got the boot and she left him for Donald.”

“Do you want to hear the fucking story or not?”

“Jesus… who dipped your tail in water?” Bryan made a shooing motion with his hand. “Go on.”

“So Phillip says he wants to marry her. She goes back to Italy with him; only he gets there and then he decides he doesn’t’ want her after all. By then he’d already slept with her and driven off her other suitors.” Daniel took a drink of his already bitter beer. “So she comes home. Her reputation is in ruins for running off with him… there were rumors that she was pregnant but lost the baby. Their clans fought. His left when the council sided with her family.”

“So why didn’t she come back to you?”

“She never wanted me to begin with.” He traced the spill of beer on the bar top’s lamination.

“That sucks. She wound up with Donald. Rough.”

“It’s not a big deal. That was a long time ago.”

“Obviously something is up or the two of you wouldn’t still be fighting like cats and dogs.”

Daniel didn’t bother to look up from the bar as his brother practically fell over laughing at his own joke.

“You’re the only one that finds all those puns funny.”

“Maybe, but at least I’m laughing. I’d rather be the corny brother than the depressing gloomy one, the catty bitch, or the saint.” Bryan wiped his hand over his face.

“Wow… that was serious.”

“Shut up and tell me what this is really about?”

“He ruined a woman’s reputation and he used her for sex. Then he sent her packing when he was done with her. Now he wants to come crawling back a few years later and thinks everyone is going to forget and forgive what he did.”

“Well, bro. It’s good for us we’ll never need to see him again then.”

“Yeah, only at every Clan get together ever.”

“There are thousands of clansmen. We can easily avoid one in a thousand.”

“If you say so.”

“I do.” Bryan straightened his shoulders. “Now sober up so you can drive me back to the house.”

“Ha Ha.”

“I wasn’t joking.” Bryan deadpanned before bursting into laughter.

. . .

“Wake the hell up Daniel.”

The pounding on the door continued in a steady, irritating beat as it rapped against the door and his head. With a groan he yanked himself out of bed, pulling the sheet off his bed and looping it around his waist. “I’m up fuckhead. Stop with the noise.” He growled through the door at Bryan.

“Mom wants you downstairs ASAP. We have guests.”

“I know. The Lion clan is here for the weekend.” Daniel ran a hand through his hair and turned the knob in the shower. The icy spray crashed over his body and stung his skin. Splashing his head with water briefly, Daniel soaped his hair as completely as possible. His body continued to move through the water as quickly as possible; gooseflesh broke out over every inch of his skin. His teeth rattled under the attention before the bar of soap slid in his hands and over his chest. Teeth chattering, Daniel shut off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist. While the icy shower did nothing for his hang over it at last woke him up enough that he might be cognizant enough to have a phone conversation.

He didn’t bother to do more than shake the water from his hair before he put on a pair of slacks and a dress shirt from his duffle. The second he opened the door, he immediately regretted it. People scattered on either end of the hall and down the stairs. Even whispering, that many people created a hell of a lot of noise. One child took the opportunity to go screeching down the hall before slamming into the media room down the hall.

With a grimace, Daniel continued down the stairs.

“He rises from the dead.” A disapproving voice preceded his mother’s entrance. She gave him a big hug. “Now come with me. I’d like you to meet someone.”

Daniel rolled his eyes. Another day of escorting around some vaguely related person while they prattled on about nothing at all. He couldn’t imagine who his mother might want him to smooze with now.

“Bella, this is Daniel.” She smiled, her hand reaching out to clasp Bella’s with Daniel’s in the other hand. “Daniel this is Bella. She’s an Alliance Ambassador.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Bella.” Daniel smiled and purred a greeting against the back of her hand.

A faint blush rolled over her cheeks. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well.”

“Daniel if you would be so kind as to entertain Bella until the hunt tonight.”

“Will you be joining us this evening?” Daniel held out his arm while she gently placed her arm in his with another faint blush.

“Yes. I must admit that I’m interested in seeing my first interspecies hunt.”

“It is indeed a beautiful sight to see so many lions and panthers running together.”

“I have heard it is like watching the sun and moon move together as one.”

“I think it is rare that I’ve heard the hunt spoken of so poetically, but it is not overblown. To both Clans, the hunt is an extremely spiritual event.”

“It is something my Clan also reveres.” She nodded gently, her long blonde hair crossed over her face gently. The pastel of her blue dress accented the deep brown of the eyes he could have sworn he’d seen somewhere before.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what is the species of your Clan?”

“Not at all. Forgive my oversight.” She blushed, “I’m afraid my ears don’t give away much. “We are canine. Originating from the line of Italian native dogs known as the maremma.”

“You are the sister of Phillip Maremma.” Daniel’s feet stopped without his realizing it. The hair on his neck perked in warning.

“Yes. You know Phillip?”

“You might say that. I’m afraid he and I have not been the best of friends.”

“My brother has very few friends left in the Alliance, and fewer worth mentioning.” She ducked her head, “It is only to be expected given what happened.”

“I can not imagine that it’s been easy on you given what happened.”

She looked up at him, her hands coming to rest over his, “I think you are the first person that considered what it meant to me first.”

“I’m sorry. It must be even more difficult now that you are of marriage age.”

“It has been interesting. There are many non Alliance clans, but negotiations are wary and the candidates are not always the most desirable.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Daniel presented his arm, “I hope that you have better luck in the future.”

She took his arm again as they moved out into the garden.

With a raised eyebrow, Daniel sent the pack of children scurrying from the small seating area in the garden. “I hope you enjoyed the party the other night.”

“I haven’t seen anything that grand in years.” She sighed, “The dancing alone was amazing.”

“I’m sure that the Alliance would be happy to have you back.”

“I don’t know that we’ll be back any time soon.” She smiled, “I’m afraid my brother will determine whether or not we rejoin or even visit. He is the Alpha now.”

“Is your father well?” There was a genuine concern in Daniel’s voice.

“No. I’m afraid he passed away after a victory with a warring pack.”

“And your brother succeeded him?” With a nod, Daniel took Bella’s hand, “I hope that your pack is well in the future.”

“Yes.” She blushed at his hand, “I have hopes that if there are offers for me, my pack will have a place here.”

“I’m sure there will be many offers.” Daniel released her hand, “you can have no doubts as to your charm”

“Even the sparkle of charm can be dimmed by the shadow of one’s pack. “She grimaced, “My brother worries that some candidates may seek to use me as a means of vengeance. It is odd to think that some hold on to such hate when Katharine and her husband are quite happy with what happened after that. Even if the method of their journey was not to be envied, the destination is admirable.” She laughed, “I don’t think I ever saw Katharine glow so much when my brother courted her.” A sudden look passed over her face. “I’m sorry for your loss as well. To lose her first to my brother and then to another-”

“Do not worry, Katharine and I came to terms before she agreed to marry your brother. I am happy to see her mated.”

“And you? Have you since chosen another?” She smiled as if whispering a secret.

“I haven’t.” He laughed, “I’m afraid I haven’t much been searching.”

“Don’t tell me you’ve fallen to the wayside and found yourself a human.”

“My brother is human.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean disrespect. I think it would just be a shame to lose someone so noble and of lineage when I have barely debuted here.”

“Are you implying that I should be one of your suitors?”

“I would be honored to be the object of your pursuit. “

“I do not think you brother would approve.”

“Please do not let him hold you back. My brother and father have caused enough unhappiness.”

“I will most certainly keep you in mind in the coming season.” Daniel smiled and kissed her hand.

“I would thank you to remove your person from my sister.” There was no mistaking the tone of voice.

“Phillip, you know Daniel.”

“We have met, Bella.” Phillip offered his hand to his sister.

“I was hoping to spend some more time out here in the sunshine before tonight.”

“Bella, Alpha Kurokyou and Alpha Lion have requested a meeting with us.”

“Very well, Alpha.” Bella took his hand as she rose from the seat.

“Please go ahead, Bella. I will catch up in a moment.” He placed a kiss on his sister’s forehead before whispering something in her ear.

“Excuse me, Maremma.” Daniel stood and attempted to move around the other man.

“I was hoping to have a word with you, Daniel.” Phillip motioned to the chairs.

“What would you like to discuss, Phillip?”

“Please refrain from seeing my sister.”

“She has requested that I keep her in mind as a DM candidate.”

“I’m afraid I can not approve of any such marriage.” Phillip’s back went pole straight. “I’m politely asking you to refrain from pursuing her further. I don’t wish for her to be hurt needlessly.”

“While I respect your input as Alpha, she may marry as she chooses. I do understand your worries and trepidation. I am not the man you are.”

“I do not expect you to be,” Phillip stood, “but I am her Alpha and she is my responsibility.”

“Perhaps you would like to discuss this further with my pride leader.” Daniel stood, “I have orders to pursue a DM candidate of my choosing.”

“Like it or not, Bella is under my authority. I will not let you court her simply because you want to use her to hurt me.” Phillip stepped forward; his face inches form Daniel’s. “Whatever sins you think me guilty of you will not visit them on my sister.”

“You have a meeting with my pride leader.” Daniel pushed passed the other man. “I suggest that you do not keep them waiting.”

Chapter 2: Absolution

The meeting between the Alpha and the pride leaders lasted for hours, well after the sun moved beneath the horizon. Children and couples chatted impatiently, waiting for the prep before the hunt.

Michael drank from his cup of coffee and stared out into the woods, “I don’t think I should answer the question.”

“Come on.” Daniel leaned forward in his chair, resting his weight on his forearms.”

“If you think you like her, why are you asking me in the first place?”

“Because you inherited mom’s creepy second sight bullshit in relationships.”

“You just met her. Why don’t you wait a bit before you worry about whether or not you want to keep her?”

“You’re no help.” Daniel sat back in his chair and slapped his hands on the arm rests.

“I’m not your dating guide either.”

“Ass.”

“Pansy.”

“Priss.”

“Douche.”

“You teach kids with that mouth?”

A low murmur worked its way up over the crowd and Daniel knew that the couples had been released for the hunting prep.

Michael stood up and set down his coffee, “Time to help the kids change; you want to help?”

“Not right now. I’m not feeling really calm at the moment.”

“Best you go inside then. I don’t need them picking up on your nervousness.”

“I think I’m going to go upstairs and chill out for a while.” Daniel walked up the staircase avoiding making any sound. His feet padded silently down the hall. The door opened silently.

“Please bless our hosts, father, for they have been genuinely kind to us.” The voice was unmistakable but with an element of something foreign. “Bless Bella, and let her have many suitors, she has been a good child and a dutiful pack member. Let her marriage bring her happiness. Let the one she chooses not punish her for my sins. I want so badly to pick her a husband that will help us join the Alliance and treat her well. I can’t do it though. I can’t be my father and dictate her future. Please protect her. Thank you for Katharine’s happiness and for a husband that cherishes her and brings her happiness. I did not mean to hurt her or endanger her future. Her smile is even more beautiful than I remember. Thank you. Please give me the strength to run my pack and to guide us all to a brighter future. Give me the strength to drive out those that want to hurt the pack.”

Daniel watched Phillip pray against his pressed palms. The confidence and assurance that typically straightened his shoulders weighed them down into a shrug.

“Forgive me, father. Forgive me for the pain I have caused. Forgive me for defying my father. I know I will not have my enemy’s forgiveness, but I need yours. I will do my best to serve you and guide and shape my pack into something beautiful again.”

Daniel quickly shut the door and treaded carefully down the stairs. Guilt weld up in him like blood at the edges of a wound. It was only his own pride that led him to spy on another man’s prayers. No doubt, his mother had gifted his room and his brother’s rooms to those that pray before hunt. The sheer idiocy of the mistake made him want to smack himself in the head a few times. The thought of forgiving the other man made him want to reconsider the option anyway.

The sudden urge to be free of his skin flooded through his body. His strides lengthened and sped as he headed into the beginning of the underbrush, peeling off clothing until at last the fresh earth was beneath his feet as he started the shift.

The first few steps in new skin always felt like stretching sore muscles before the smooth glide of familiarity soothed the ache. The rain the week before left the soil soft, dark, and cool beneath his paws. The scent of fresh earth ruled over everything else. He snorted at the scent of over eager marking on the breeze. Michael could have his hands full with all of the smaller children.

Further into the woods, the scents of strangers and extended family faded and the faint scents of his mother, father, and brothers caught on the breeze.

The fire flies and cicadas chirped in the night as he padded toward the open field and destination of the hunters. Most nights he felt the urge to run alongside his brethren but tonight he needed the clarity of singularity. The grass, crisp and springy beneath his feet, let loose a twilight of fire flies and for a moment, the stars floated around him.

The roar of the pack sounded and Daniel padded to a tree before leaping up and clawing his way to the lazy perch. The duties of family demanded he follow the lead of his prides; he would wait for them to catch up before they all proceeded to the grove.

His ears twitched lazily as the noise of the combined prides traveled over the ground. It wouldn’t be long before the golden, tan and black hides picked through the wilderness. Daniel snorted against the tree and laid his head in his paws.

It wasn’t long before the growls and rustles of brush gave way to running bodies. Christopher looked wild with his hair flowing behind him as he gripped the golden mane of his lover.

Daniel leapt form his perch, the pounding of his feet kept him in a pace with the large lion. Some rushed ahead and others remained behind. Even more played and pounced on each other as they made the journey together as one. He pushed his head into Chris’s outstretched hand.

A bark at his flanks brought his hand to one side as the pure white coat next to him caught his eye. The playful yip immediately told him it was Bella. She pranced forward and ran out of sight.

Daniel couldn’t bring it in himself to give chase. It wasn’t long before a second dog came up beside him.

The same grace and regal air Phillips usually had in human form transferred over to his form, but with joyous humility alight in his eyes. In the moonlight, every strand of his fur glowed white; and his deep dark eyes seemed to glow even in the darkness. The steady gate of his paws was a quick melody pounded into the earth, a cadence that called out a challenge.

As the dog kept pace beside him, Daniel caught the bark of warning before the dog took off ahead. A low growl grumbled through his chest before he took off after the bossy pup. Despite the large body of the dog, it didn’t take more than a few seconds before Daniel caught up and kept pace with the dog. As they headed for the last grouping of tress, Daniel made a show of leaping into the tress and still kept pace with the racing dog. The clearing expanded in front of them. Daniel jumped ahead, nearly landing on the dog belong him below they raced the last of the run. With a hiss of laughter, Daniel pranced further into the clearing, brushing off the un-amused huff.

Phillip walked to his sister, letting out only the lightest of pants so as not to alert Daniel he’d enjoyed the race. Loosing himself in the simple and primal act of the hunt, it felt as if even his enemy’s might someday be his brothers again.

Not willing to be put off, Daniel sat directly next to Phillip and brushed his body against the dog in a blatant act of scenting that had the dog nipping at his ear in retaliation. Together they stared up into the sky. All of them sat together. Daniel and Phillip, Jacob and Chris, Michael and Bryan, and Bella: generations of the elderly groups and the youngest of pups joined together to howl and roar into the expanse. Many bodies with one voice. No animosity. No hatred. No past. Just the brotherhood of unity.

Chapter 3: Discretion

Daniel lay in his bed and dialed the number scrawled on the piece of paper in his hand.

“I’m so happy to hear from you, Daniel.” Bella’s voice was full of warmth even over the phone.

“I was please to hear our Alpha’s have worked through any reservations they had about our communication.”

“Yes. I don’t know what they said to Phillip but he seems happy to have us converse now. Not that I’m pushing it, but I hope that someday you and my brother will at least be civil.”

“Perhaps he just needed to feel welcomed into the pride before he could let his own baggage slip.”

“Either way, he says we will be back next month.” For a moment the other end was silent, “I’m hoping that I might see you again upon my return.”

“If you are staying with us as hosts, my mother will require all the boys come home and help host.”

“I will have to consult my Alpha about where we are staying.” The smile was clear in her voice, “So you must tell me more about your family. Your mother and father are strong leaders, but I did not meet any of your brothers.”

“Well, there is not much to tell. I have three brothers. Michael is two years younger than I am. He’s a teacher, has a big heart… Bryan is two years younger than Michael. He’s still in school; he wants to be a chef. Last I heard he wants to travel the world. He’s negotiating sponsorship in Japan to study traditional dishes. He tells the worst jokes you’ve ever heard so don’t encourage him… than there is Chris.” Daniel shifted the phone form one ear to the other. “He’s eight years younger than me. Our family adopted him, but he’s always been one of us. He may not be a clansman, but he has a spirit made for the hunt. I remember when he was young and we would go on hunts. He’d cry because he couldn’t run as fast, so he rode on my back. We ran together…”

“I saw him during the hunt; his mate has a very impressive spiritual form.”

“Jacob is a very good man.” He sighed, “So tell me about your family.”

“I didn’t think you would care to hear about Phillip.”

“If he is man enough to set aside the past, so am I.”

“Well my mother was a full blood from my pack. They fell in love at her first opera. She was an amazing soprano with the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard. She died in a ranking battle. My father fought to be Alpha after that. He made sure that those responsible paid for her death. My father became Alpha. He died defending the pack.”

“And your brother?”

“Phillip is not a bad brother, or a bad Alpha.”

“I don’t want to come to a family and only bring arguments.”

“Phillip loved Katharine; at least I think he did. He didn’t have permission to court her or to promise marriage. Father had a fiancé arraigned at his birth. Phillip didn’t want her after they’d been together as teenagers. He said she was not Alpha material. Then he brought Katharine home and bedded her, thinking father wouldn’t refuse him after that. Father did and sent her home. I don’t think he ever thought it possible. During negotiations, my father told me Phillip said he no longer wanted her. I did not think him so cruel.”

“I did not mean to bring up such unpleasant memories.”

“My brother is kind. He does not always think of how his actions hurt others.”

“He looked like a fine Alpha during the Hunt.”

“I hope he will be one day.”

There was a long silence filled with the unspoken accusations.

“I was surprised with how feline clans hunt. It was impressive to watch all of the forms jump through the tress and travel on foot. I must admit, I was jealous of how you seemed to fly.”

“Do you observe a traditional hunt?”

“We do. It was nice just to run and not think about the chase or how to prove dominant.”

“I’m glad you enjoyed it. Perhaps we will run again when you are here next.”

“I would enjoy that.”

“It must be late there.”

“It is.”

“Should I let you go?”

“I will call you tomorrow.”

“Please do.” Daniel wiped a hand over his face, “have a good night Bella.”

“Good night, Daniel. I will speak with you tomorrow.”

The click on the other end of the phone made Daniel sit up. There was something not quite right about a pack member talking down about their Alpha even if she was his sister. He understood the weight of Phillips duty as pack heir even if he didn’t understand all of Phillips choices.

. . .

A month passed as if it were the moon in the course of a night sky, leaving Daniel only with reservations and questions even after so many long conversations. While neither of his parents broached the subject of the possible DM, the tension remained in Daniel’s mind. He hoped that the issue would continue to remain under the radar.

“What is it exactly that you intend to do with this girl?” Bryan looked at Daniel over his morning toast.

“I don’t know. We barely know each other but she seems set on seeing me. It’s not like I’ve paid her any more or less attention than any of the pride women.”

“She seems kind of not worth it to me.” Bryan clucked his tongue. “Yeah she’s hot but what canine goes out of their way to piss off their Alpha the way she does. Besides she’s a bitch, by literal definition.”

“Not funny Bry.”

“I didn’t say it was. I just don’t think you’re thinking about the good of our pride. You’re the first born, Simba. All off this will one day be yours.”

“Does that make you the pig?”

“Pumba was a warthog and no. you have a responsibility to have children, to care for the pride. You need a strong feline by your side to make that work. Not some bitch from a pack with a dark and sketchy past.”

“Do you have a point?”

“Yes, drop her ass before she gets attached and you get to play the jackass that drops the impressionable youth.”

“I’m not shoving pride mentality down your throat. Don’t start with me.”

Bryan shrugged, “I’m telling you a hell of a lot more than mom and dad will when you ask to marry her and they laugh in your face.”

“You know, I like it better when you’re all bad jokes.”

“Can’t be funny all the time.”

“From now on, try.”

“Will you stop bickering? I thought we raised you boys better. Now get dressed, the Ambassadors will be here shortly.”

A chorus of yes mam’s rang out and the men moved to their childhood rooms to prepare for the formal greeting. Daniel took his time dressing, not wanting to spend the time contemplating what might turn into a rather awkward conversation with his brothers or parents.

By the time Daniel showered again, dressed and brushed his teeth for a good five minutes so that the initial re-introductions were finished by the time he finished. His family sat around the small table in the kitchen. Upon his entrance Bella stood.

Her hair hung in ringlets around her face and lay over her shoulders and fell down her back. The red of her dress enhanced the blush of her skin and the red of her lipstick. “Daniel!”

Before Daniel had time to respond, Bella stood in his arms. Over the curve of her shoulder, the glare of her brother was clear. Daniel tried to slip out of the hug “It’s good to see you too, Bella.” As soon as she let him go, Daniel held out a hand to Phillip, “It’s good to see you Alpha Maremma.”

“And you, Daniel,” the odd glimmer in Phillip’s eyes made Daniel wonder if damage had already been done.

“Come Daniel; let the Alpha’s talk business. I can’t wait to catch up.” Bella took his arm.

“May I, Alpha Maremma?” Daniel caught the flash in the other man’s eyes.

“Please do.” Phillip waved his hand in their direction and turned his attention back to the rest of the pride.

Bella wasted no time steering them away from the garden and toward the family woods, “You look well.”

“Thank you.” Daniel nodded his head, “You’re stunning.”

A duck of her head brought guilt rising to the surface. “I have considered what you said before.”

“What I said?” she tilted her head a little to one side.

“About your list of suitors.”

“I hope that you are still among them.”

“I’m afraid I can’t be.” Daniel stopped her, dropping her hand from his arm, “While I find you charming, you have duties to your family and I have duties to mine. I must think of the pride.”

“You must be joking. One of your brothers is a human married to a lion. They can not mate but the Lions did not refuse the marriage any more that your parents would refuse ours.”

“Chris is not the heir to the pride. His duties are different than mine.”

“Your happiness is just as important as his.”

“And your brother’s happiness is just as important as yours.”

“My brother spoke to you then.”

“On several occasions, but that’s not the reason for my decision.”

“Then what is? You know I adore you. I’m not Katharine, but I have my charms.”

“Katharine is not the reason behind my decision.” Daniel’s hand clenched in his attempt to grip the words, “I respect your Alpha and I serve my pride before my own needs. I’m afraid that I can’t return your affections, and I respect you too much to lead you on.”

“But if I were a panther you would consider it?”

“No. I wouldn’t.”

“My brother is a selfish ass that drove away all of his lovers and I won’t have him drive away you.”

“You’re not in the love with me.”

“I could be. You’re sweet and charming. By definition you are tall, dark, and handsome. I could love you. Phillips would get used to it. He couldn’t deny me after what happened before.”

“Is that all you care about? Upsetting your pack and pissing off your brother because you think you might be able to love me?”

“That isn’t what I said.”

“But that’s how you’re behaving. Bella, I can’t be with someone that can’t put their pack and their leaders first. I’m sorry.” Daniel didn’t bother to let her reply. “Please allow me to escort you back to the house.”

The deep breath she took shook her shoulders, and she gave him a meek glance up at his face. “Yes, thank you.”

The journey back to the house was slow and silent. Daniel didn’t think of anything to say until they came to the garden again. “I’m sorry, Bella.”

“Don’t be,” She smiled, “Perhaps this is for the best. I do intend to prove myself to you, Daniel.”

“Don’t-“

“I know that isn’t want you asked for, but, until I’m certain there can’t be anything between us, I’m not giving up.”

“Please, Bella.”

“I won’t say anything more.” She brushed her hair back and stepped into the open door, her face all smiles.

As Daniel contemplated whether or not he’d actually gotten through to Bella, his family chatted happily with Alpha Maremma. It was odd to sit at the table at any family event and not see Chris. After graduating college, Chris moved to France with his husband. Now they barely came at all. Would Phillip miss his sister after she married, or would he get a new pack member? It wasn’t a stretch to imagine the usual blank calm in Phillip’s face contort into a painful mask. He would still look like royalty in his sorrow, almost as he appeared when he prayed.

“Daniel.”

The mention of his name made Daniel jump, “Yes.”

“Might I speak with you privately?”

“Of course.” Daniel stood and followed Phillip into his father’s empty office.

“Bella told me you spoke with her this afternoon.”

“You know I did.”

“And that you asked for her hand.”

Daniel stood up. “I did not. I told her that I would no longer consider her as a DM candidate.”

“I told you before not to pursue my sister.”

“And I no longer will.”

“Have you had enough from playing with her emotions then?”

“I did no such thing.”

“You did it to be spiteful. I extended my trust. You could have had Katharine if you wanted her.”

“You mean after you used and abandoned her.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know you’re accusing me of the same thing you did to Katharine, only I never promised your sister anything.”

“Bella would not lie. She says you held her, you proposed to her.”

Daniel shifted uncomfortably at the subject matter. “Your sister’s honor is 100% intact and the only time she has been in my arms is while you were in the room and she greeted me. You have no need to worry. I can not even approach a DM before my mother and father have approved of my choice.”

“You have only punished an innocent girl by playing with her feelings.”

“I did not propose, nor ever hint that I would. I told her that I could not consider her at all.”

“Liar.”

“That’s the first time I’ve ever had a claim against my name. Your pack can’t say the same.”

“Challenge.”

“What?” Daniel threw his hands down to his sides in an attempt to prevent them from reaching out to him. .

“I challenge you.” Phillip growled. “I will defend the honor of my pack and my sister.”

“I’m not fighting you over a woman I don’t want.”

“You will fight for the honor of your name.”

“I don’t love her. I didn’t propose.”

“Maybe not, you just led her on all the while making eyes at your brother.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“You insisted on escorting my sister around and then you look at your own brother with more love. You used her.”

“No. I don’t know why you’re bringing my brothers into this conversation, but none of this is true. I considered your sisters request for consideration and decided against it because you’re sister disrespects her Alpha behind his back.”

Phillip didn’t reply he just launched himself across the room. The change had already begun as his claws extended and tore into Daniels clothing.

Daniel grunted with the force of the impact and grappled with the other man. “Stop it, you mutt.”

Phillip bit him and Daniel knocked him on the head. “Knock it---oomph” Daniel winced as his head struck the wall.

“You will not insult my sister.”

Daniel slipped out from under Phillip and pinned the other man. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insult you, but I am not going to fight you.”

“Yes, you’d much rather roll around with your brother.”

This time Daniel lunged forward, slamming Phillips head into the ground.

The two men rolled on the floor, punching, and clawing. Phillip managed to shove the other man around until he wound up on top. His hips pumped in a show of canine dominance he couldn’t control.

“You fucking mutt, stop humping me.” Daniel growled and shoved the other man off him.

“Don’t like being the bitch you are.” Phillip’s body shook with his rage. His voice darkened with anger. His dog fought to scrape to the surface. The calm, rational Phillip slipped through his fingers and the vibrant primal self pushed through. When Phillip pinned Daniel again, the standard dry hump resumed and both of them took on a new motivation when a moan slipped through Phillip’s lips. Phillip flew off of Daniel. His breath was heavy as he straightened his body and clothing, ignoring the erection in his pants. “I will challenge you formally. But I apologize for my rather primitive outburst.”

Entranced with the other man’s passion the sudden change shook Daniel. He didn’t think as he pulled the other man close with a grip on his shirt. “Puppy throw a bone?”

Phillip winced, “It is an unfortunate side effect of canine dominant impulse. I apologize. I am aware that the feline impulse is dissimilar.”

“Yes we cat’s scent.” Daniel rolled his body over Phillips, pressing every inch of himself against the other man before rubbing one cheek against Phillips.

“Point taken. Please stop.”

“No.”

“What are you doing?” Phillip groaned as their matching bulges pressed together.

“I have no clue.” Daniel kissed him, purring at the scent of his scent covering Phillips.

Phillips whimpered as a hand shot to his groin and he tried to pull back only to be pushed and guided until his ass hit the edge of the desk. “God!” Phillip growled but another kiss and his lips moved of their own accord and devoured Daniel. The friction between them was amazing but their eyes and thoughts remained locked away from each other. Phillips body seized up with pleasure as Daniel continued to grind between his spread legs.

The grunt of pleasure from Daniel signaled the last of their movements.

“What have I done?” Phillip nearly sobbed.

“It’s not a big deal. Animal impulse.” Daniel shrugged and made a disapproving glance into the front of his slacks.

“No that was… that was… oh my god.”

“It’s fine.”

“No its not. I’m a pack leader. An Alpha…. I can’t be a…”

“A what.” Daniel shoved Phillips shoulder, “an animal or a gay animal.”

“Gay.” The word was a terrified gasp.

“What the hell are you freaking out about?” Daniel shrugged. “You canines fuck each other just to prove your place; you don’t think that it can be pleasurable.”

“It should not be pleasurable.”

“Well it was.” Daniel purred and licked a stripe up Phillip’s lips.

“This will not happen again.”

“I wasn’t planning on it.” Daniel laughed.

“This is not funny. No one can know.”

“Chill out before you offend me and we have to go through with the challenge after all.”

‘Please refrain from contacting me or my sister in the future.”

“You arrogant ass.”

“I mean it. You’ve caused enough problems and now this.”

“I’m so fucking fed up with your pack constantly pretending I don’t have a goddamn say in my own life. You want me out, beat me in a challenge.”

“And if I win you disappear.”

A snarl ripped from Daniel’s mouth. “And if I win you give up on joining the Alliance.”

“Deal.”

“You can’t be fucking serious.”

“I am.” Phillip offered his hand.

“Fine, deal.” Daniel confirmed with a handshake. “I’ll see you in a week, lover.” Daniel teased and licked Phillip’s cheek before he slunk from the room.

. . .

The night before the fight weighed heavily on Phillip’s mind. He couldn’t seem to stop thinking of his opponent. His body grew needy with ache every time he thought of Daniel. What struck him most powerfully was the way the other man’s scent wouldn’t leave his nose. He constantly could smell Daniel so powerfully that he could almost taste the other man’s skin in his mouth. Many pack leaders were gay, but not with their enemies… not with their sister’s lover interests.

Daniel stretched out his legs and let his spine roll. The basketball shorts hung low on his waist and nothing more. Phillip looked downright uncomfortable in his own pair of shorts and surrounded by his opponents family. The look on Bella’s face was one of staunch triumph; so much so that it made Daniel want to throw up. She believed she made her brother fight for something he hated. Losing would mean jeopardizing his pack and winning would eliminate his sister’s chance at happiness.

“No shift.”

Daniel nodded and stretched one last time. “Ready?”

A tight nod of his head and Phillip crouched low, dropping his center of gravity. The look on his face was calm and determined. Not a line of worry marred the beauty of his jaw line.

Not bothering with a stance, Daniel let the finesse of his muscles glide under his skin and waited; a lazy smile spread across his face. When he did attack, it was a slick motion in which he fought to force Phillip higher in his stance; but the other man was quicker, and he side stepped the punch to the gut.

Phillip was quick enough to strike back and had a few really good punches to the ribs before Daniel managed to slip back again. The contact made him thirsty for more of the violence. His hands moved of their own accord and connected with flesh over and over again.

Knowing that the movements would take their toll on his body, Daniel made a point to kick out. The full strength of his knee slammed into Phillips stomach.

The breath collapsed from his stomach.

Both men fell to a heap on the ground. Daniel clawed his way from under a snarling and punching Phillip. He slammed his fist into Phillip’s face.

The hit to the eye stunned Phillip, his head snapping back painfully before blind rage ensued and he charged forward.

Shifting his weight, Daniel carried their weight back and landed on Phillip’s stomach pummeling away at his face and chest. His knuckles split and bleed, stinging with the sweat of the other man’s flesh. A hard uppercut sent him backward into the dirt.

Blood poured from Phillip’s split lip and the taste sent him into a flurry of punches as he attacked Daniel. It wasn’t until the fourth or fifth punch to the rib that Phillip rolled off the other man and stood, clutching his stomach.

Daniel struck out Phillips mid chest; doubling the other man again and shoving him face first into the dirt. The attack on the other man’s sides and kidneys was vicious. With a slam of Phillips head into the ground, the other man collapsed under his weight. Daniel rubbed his cheek over Phillip’s shoulder. “I win, pup.”

The attempt to stand failed and Daniel felt his midsection crumble as pair of arms caught him.

“You fucking idiot.”

Daniel thought he lost his mind as Chris pulled one of his arms around Chris’s shoulder. “What are you doing here?”

“I heard you were in town and decided to take on an Alpha. Do you know how expensive an international flight is on one day’s notice?” Chris scolded. “You fucking jackass.”

“Stop nagging. I’m fine. I won, didn’t I?” Daniel stopped and pulled his younger brother out from under his arm. One broad hand cupped his brother’s cheek. “I will always protect our clan. You will always have a home and a family to come back to.” Daniel placed a soft kiss on his brother’s shocked lips. “Now help an injured animal inside and onto a cushy surface.” The hole Daniel felt in his chest grew larger.

Phillip picked himself up and out of the dirt. His head pounded and his chest ached as Daniel kissed his brother. They were in love. It was only pride and jealousy that made him question Daniel’s word. He was just too ashamed to admit that he wanted Daniel to himself. Maybe he always wanted Daniel. Maybe that’s why he wanted to have Katharine so badly. He hunched over in pain and slowly stood up.

Bella’s face was a blank mask.

“We are leaving, Bella.”

“Phillip.”

“Now, Bella. Or would you challenge me now?” Even hurt, Phillip managed to raise himself to a standing position. Slowly, he made his way into the house to make arraignments. It took so little effort to get a flight home and a taxi to the airport that Phillip felt lost. Pride Leader Kurokyou invited him back for another ambassador’s visit, but Phillip declined as professionally as he could manage. If he could not hold his clan together on his own, it would only be a matter of time before they collapsed regardless. It was a mistake to seek out the Alliance again. Daniel probably hadn’t told them of their bargain but that wasn’t surprising. Daniel was a man of discretion and honor. He wouldn’t consider whether or not Phillip would keep his word.

The plane ride stretched on forever. He tried not to think about Daniel, but the memory of those lips and sleek muscles haunted his thoughts and stripped away his control. Perhaps it would be best to leave the pack and give Bella a decent shot with a strong Alpha.

As he walked from the plane, no one suspected his injuries.

Chapter 4: Recovery

Lying on the couch, Daniel slumped away from the spent ice pack.

“Do you need anything?” Chris threw another ice pack at his brother.

Daniel shook his head. “It’s been a week, Chris. I’m fine. How does Jacob put up with this?”

“He loves me.” Chris gave a playful wink before turning on his heel and heading back into the kitchen.

“Yeah, I got to try that.” Daniel laughed and cried out as a potato hit him in the back of the head. “Hey stop trying to injure the crippled.”

“You’re not crippled so stop whining.” Chris called from the kitchen.

“So you’re finally over him?” Michael chuckled and entered the living room. The couch dipped as he sat down.

“Over who?”

“Chris.” He laughed again at the confusion on Daniel’s face. You’re the only one that doesn’t know then. We all know that you’re in love with Chris. Or that you were.”

“Stop fucking around.” Daniel tossed the potato at Michael.”

“You’re as dense as a rock.”

“What’s your point?”

“You’re not in love with him anymore.”

“And how do you know that?”

“Think about it block head. You know everything about Chris; down to the first time he kissed a boy and what shampoo he used on which days of the week. You fought every half and full shift battle he was ever challenged to and even those that he started. You held him the first time he was dumped. You snuck him his first beer. He slept in your bed more often than his own when we were kids.”

“And now?” Daniel lowered his head. Afraid to acknowledge how much of what Michael just said was painfully true.

“And now you look at him like he’s you’re brother and not everything else too.”

“So what?”

“You’re in love with Phillip.”

“Bullshit.”

“Fine. Figure it out yourself.” Michael stood up and strolled from the room with a satisfied grin on his face.

. . .

Phillip didn’t bother with the flurry of questions from his advisors or enforcers. Instead he barked orders and spent his time in solitude.

“Alpha.” The words came through the door, “You have a visitor. An ambassador from the Alliance.”

“I will be there in a moment. Show him to my office.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

Phillip stood with a wince and walked to the door. He’d have to come up with something to tell whoever it was. His shoes echoed off the marble floor as he walked down the hall. The large, carved door opened into his office.

“Alpha Maremma.”

Phillip did his best not to move any more than necessary as he leaned against the desk of his office as nonchalantly as possible. “What can I do for you Clansman Kurokyou?”

The formal greeting tore the smile from Daniel’s lips. “I am here on behalf of my clan and my pride leader. We have come to offer you sponsorship into the Alliance.”

The offer stung. “I’m afraid I can’t accept such an offer.”

“Why is that?” Daniel stepped forward suddenly uneasy with the distance between them.

“You are well aware, Clansman, that I entered into an agreement that prohibits me from any contact with the Alliance. Please leave.”

“Phillip.”

“What more do you want, Daniel. You have it all. You avoided Bella’s trap, got rid of me. You’re brother has come back to your side. You’ve won.” Phillip growled, “Have you come to claim my pack, as well.”

Daniel didn’t bother with the pomp and circumstance any longer. He strode over and pulled Phillip into his arms, “I want you.”

“What the hell are you doing?” Phillip struggled to pull away.

The question remained unanswered as Daniel kissed Phillip.

Hard lips crashed into his own and stiff arms wrapped around him until he clutched at Daniel’s shoulders and pulled the other man closer.

“I want you.”

“I want you too.” The forbidden whisper crossed his lips.

“Do you have a bedroom here?”

“Yes.” Phillip laughed at the question.”

“We need to take care of these.” Daniel ground their hips together with his hands firmly planted on Phillip’s ass. “Someplace with a bed.”

Phillip nodded. “I’m Alpha here.”

“No one will know until you tell them.” Daniel motioned to the door.

It took all of Phillip’s will power not to run down the hall. They reached his bedroom and pushed through the main room without a thought before finally entering the bedroom.

There was no mistaking the bed as anything less than a sign of dominance. The size alone was enough to fit ten men and the bed frame was heavy dark mahogany so intricately carved and whole it would never be removed from the room.

Phillip surprised Daniel as he leapt toward him and kissed him with more passion than Daniel ever saw in him. “Clothing off.”

Phillip nodded, as if speaking might wake him from whatever dream he’d fallen into. The tan of Daniel’s skin called out to his hands with a siren’s song. The second he touched the bare expanse of Daniel’s chest, he knew there was no going back. Even if this was a cruel joke and another sin left to haunt him, Phillip was determined to follow it to the end.

Daniel wasn’t quite sure what came over Phillip but he sure as hell wasn’t going to complain. Stripping off his shirt and pants, he immediately felt the hot hands of his soon to be lover touch him. Just a caress had his hair standing on end.

The tongue plunging into Phillip’s mouth coaxed a burning desire through his entire body.

He refused to wait any longer, pulling down Phillip’s boxers to find the length inside them.

“Wait… I might.” Phillip pleaded.

“Come. Go ahead. We’ll both come and then we’ll have plenty of time to slow it down later.”

Phillip couldn’t speak after that. His thoughts disappeared completely as Daniel’s hand wrapped around his length. A gargled gasp rolled over his lips, forcing Phillip to bury his face into the side of Daniel’s neck.

“Hasn’t anyone touched you like this?”

“Not… in … oh god… years.” Phillip’s fingers dug into Daniel’s shoulders.

“Fuck.” The vulnerable ecstasy in the other man’s face made his own arousal grow. The slick beads of precum on his fingers made the tip of his cock all the silkier.

“Our cocks look so hot together.” Daniel whispered into Phillip’s hair while pressing their lengths together in the palm of one hand.

With half-shut eyes Phillip peaked down over Daniel’s collarbone to where Daniel’s long palm circled them both. A moan bubbled out of his mouth and he reached down to feel the heat of Daniel’s cock in his hand.

“Fuck yeah.” Daniel purred. “You’re hand feels so good wrapped around us both.”

“Do you have to be so graphic?” Phillip panted as they stared down at their hands.

“You like it.” Daniel smiled, “Every time I say something dirty your dick twitches. You’re all slippery because you like it so much.”

“Oh god.”

“See you just let out more precum. God that’s hot.” Trailing a finger down the side of Phillip’s cock he dragged more of the slippery beads down along his length.

“Stop talking.”

“Oh hell no.” Daniel chuckled in Phillip’s ear.

“I’m going to tell you all about the way your dick feels smooth and sticky with all of your leaking. It’s so sexy when you pump you cock into my hand. When you come, I’m going to smear it all over the head of your dick until your twitching with pleasure. I’m going to shoot my load all over your hand and stomach. Oh yeah you like that thought.” Daniel squeezed him. “You got rod hard when I said I was going to come on you.”

“Stop… talk...talking” Phillips gasped as a hand slid down his back. “I’m gonna pet your balls and while my fingers are still slippery, I’m going to rub that tight little hole.” A finger slid down the crease of Phillip’s ass as the words were spoken. “Has anyone ever played with you here?”

Not even bothering with words Phillip shook his head and buried his face again.

“None of that.” Daniel removed his hand from between them, fighting the need to stroke himself and his lover. “I want to see your face when I make you come.” The desperate look in Phillip’s eyes made him groan and pull Phillips closers. “Don’t stop stroking.” Daniel reached down and guided Phillip’s hand.

Phillip lost his mind with the pleasure of Daniel’s voice whispering at him to keep stroking, and where, and how hard. It was dizzying and his hand felt burnt with the heat of their passion. The finger at his hole punched a yelp out of him and he forgot to keep pace and wrapped his arms around Daniel’s neck.

“You like that?” Low with pleasure, Daniel’s voice encouraged another moan from Phillip. “Do you like when I run my finger, slick with your precum over your tight hole?”

Phillip nodded his head in pleasure as that digit probed and pushed at his sensitive body. He never thought something this dirty could feel so good.

“Look at me or I’ll stop fingering your tight ass.”

Phillip blushed at the comment, “I can’t.” The hand over his cock and the finger at his back stopped. A whimper slid from his tongue. “Please.”

“Look at me.”

Phillip nodded and stepped back for a moment.

“Damn.” The desperation and need in Phillip’s eyes undid Daniel completely. He pulled the other man close, slanting his mouth over the slightly parted lips of his pup. “I thought this would be enough...”

Phillip didn’t have enough brain cells to contemplate the meaning behind Daniel’s words before he found himself on his back on the soft comforter of his bed.

“You look so fucking delicious.” Daniel kicked off his boxers before peeling off the clothing trapped around Phillip’s ankles.

There was nothing better than feeling of Daniel’s naked body gliding over his the first time their skin touched. Phillip reached up and stroked down Daniel’s back before pulling the other man down into another hungry kiss. The weight of his partner settled down against his pelvis and Phillip’s hips thrust upward in need.

“That’s it baby. You’re so fucking close.” Daniel kissed and bit Phillip’s collarbone before licking a trail up to the curl of one ear. “I can’t wait for you to come all over us.”

Phillip moaned, “Stop talking and kiss me.”

Daniel didn’t waste a second, doing just as his lover requested.

The thrust of his lover against him, the feel of his lover’s abs sliding along his cock, drove Phillip to the very edge of orgasm. He sank his teeth into the shoulder of Daniel’s neck and the taste of skin and faintly of blood sent him rolling over the edge. His back arched and body jerked as he shot between them.

“Shit.” Daniel winced as the teeth in his shoulder clamped down, drawing blood. The wet, sticky heat of Phillip’s cum streaked up their bodies.

Phillip released his hold on Daniel and dropped down onto the bed, his chest pounding with the aftershock of his orgasm.

“You look so fucking hot like that.”

Phillip opened his eyes and gasped at the wound next to Daniel’s throat. “Oh my god! Are you okay?” She scrambled to find something to press against the wound and found only the palm of his hand. “I’m so sorry.”

“Shh… it’s okay, love.” Daniel kissed at Phillips lips.

“No its not. I practically mauled you.”

“Animal instinct.” Daniel purred and slid his body against Phillips. “My turn.”

“What the hell are you talking about? You probably need stitches.”

“If you really want to make it up to me, then stay still.” Daniel ran his hands through the cooling semen on Phillip’s chest and brought it down to the puckered opening hidden between Phillip’s legs. “You marked me and now I want to mark you.”

“But you need-“

“I need you to spread your legs.” Daniel leered, “So I can tease more of your cute hole.”

Phillip turned red at the words but found his legs sliding apart against his better judgment.

“”Remember what I said before.” Daniel chuckled at the look on Phillip’s face. His sticky finger pressed against Phillip’s entrance and Phillip weakly moaned, “I’ll just have to remind you then.”

Phillip was well aware that he should seek help for Daniel’s shoulder but when the first finger breached his body he lost himself in the sensation.

“I’m inside you,” Daniel whispered against Phillip’s stomach and licked a stripe up Phillip’s skin. “I love the way you taste on my tongue.”

Phillip groaned as a second finger stretched him and pressed deeper inside him. It was uncomfortable in an oddly freeing way, like he didn’t have control over his body or any way to mediate the sensations overtaking his senses.

“You’re so hot and tight inside.” Daniel nipped at Phillip’s happy trail. “Do you think that you can take me? Do you want my dick inside you stretching into that tight heat?”

“Shut-up.” Phillips growled as his cock gave a weak twitch, “You are such a pervert.”

“I’m not the one getting hard while I’m fingered.” Daniel chuckled, “I love the way you feel inside. The way you feel against me. I can’t wait be inside you… I can’t wait to feel you squeeze around my dick.”

“Do it.” Phillip pulled at Daniel’s shoulders, pulling him up toward his mouth, “Fuck me.” Peppering his lover’s face with kisses, Phillip groaned when those long fingers left him. “Please.”

“Alright, alright.” Daniel consoled him, brushing his hair back from his eyes. “This might hurt. I don’t have anything that will make slipping inside easier.”

“Stop talking,” Phillip reached down and grasped Daniel’s hips and wrapped his legs around Daniel’s hips.

“Okay.” A groan broke out of his chest as Daniel’s cock brushed against Phillip’s ass for the first time. “You need to relax.” Daniel whispered softly into Phillip’s ear as he attempted to gain control over the need building inside him.

Phillip bit into Daniel’s uninjured shoulder. “Stop talking.”

Daniel drank from Phillip’s mouth; his tongue swirled against Phillip’s, tasting the tang of his one blood. He pressed inside slowly: the entrance of his lover’s body slowly gave way under the pressure.

In an attempt to contain his reaction, Phillip tossed his head back and bit his lip; his fingers clenched in an attempt not to further injure his mate. “Oh god.”

“I know… I’m trying.” Panting, Daniel stopped his progress and tried to ignore the urge to force himself further inside. The passage was so tight that the pressure bordered on painful. “I’ll stop.”

“Don’t stop.” The weak plea grated against both their nerves, “I want what you promised me,” He whispered. “I want your dick inside me. I want your scent inside me.”

“And you thought it was hot when I talk like that.” Daniel smirked. “Okay.” He nodded nervously. “All of it.” The echoing nod from his partner gave him the courage to continue until he was completely inside. The muscles of his abs ached with the effort to hold his position.

“God you’re big.” Phillip winced and arched his pack in an attempt to stretch the soreness out of his body.

“Don’t move.”

The moaned words fell on deaf ears as Phillip pulled himself nearly free only to rock against the pressure again.

All of Daniel’s control flew out of the window. His instincts thrust his hips forward, making them both grunt with effort as their movements increased. Daniel swore against Phillip’s collarbone as the sweat beaded down his back from the effort of his thrusting. “You are so goddamn tight around my dick.”

“Ugh.” Phillip’s hands made a wet slapping noise as he tried to find a way to ground himself under the onslaught of pleasure. He hurt, he burned, and most of all he wanted more. He wanted his mate to come inside him.

“Oh yeah. Whatever you’re thinking about, keep heading in that direction.” Daniel moaned as the muscles of his lover squeezed him more tightly. “Or is it that I’m talking again.” He licked at Phillip’s chin. “Did you miss my voice whispering all those dirty things about you?” Another groaned poured from his lips as he kissed Phillip’s ear, “Oh yeah you did. Shit, you’re practically gripping me with your ass. I love the way you pant and groan every time I bottom out.” Daniel panted for a moment, his forehead pressing against Phillip’s chest. “You’re going to make me come inside you. I’m going to fill you with my scent. Oh shit. Fuck.” Daniel’s body seized up and his hips continued to bury himself further inside his lover, rocking them both further up the bed. “Damn.” A moan beneath him told him Phillip could feel exactly what was happening. The hard length now pressing against his stomach told him he’d more than enjoyed the sex. “Can you feel me inside you still?” Daniel whispered, gripping Phillip’s length in his hand.

Phillip didn’t think anything could feel better than Daniel sliding in him, but the suddenly slicker movements of his lover set him off again and; he rolled his hips in appreciation, trying to drive his own cock over the edge again. “Yes.”

“I’m still so hard in your ass.” Daniel whispered. “You got so hard from just my dick in your ass. Damn. It’s so easy to slide in and out of you, pushing all that cum around inside of you.” Daniel felt the twitch of his lover and knew he was close. “You’re close aren’t you? You want to come with me inside you?”

“Yes. More!”

“So come.” Daniel urged him. “Come for me again.”

Phillip’s back stuck to the sheets, pulling the up with him as he humped into Daniel’s hand before covering their sweat slick bodies with another wave of semen. “Stop… no more…” he pushed Daniel’s hand away, his organ now sore from overuse and sensitive from their passion.

Rolling to one side, Daniel shivered as the cooler air caressed his skin. His breath evened out as his chest heaved.

Phillip sat up, suddenly uncomfortable with his own nakedness and the fluids covering his skin.

“Oh no.” Daniel pulled Phillip back down onto the bed and cushioned the other man’s head on his chest. “I want to stay just like this for a little while at least. I like the smell of me on your skin.” Daniel smiled at the shiver that went through his mate.

Chapter 5: Denial

“My father planned out my life before I was even born. There was a neighboring canine clan he wanted to align with for years. My sister and I were just the things to do that. Their daughter came just four years after me, sealing the deal. I would have married her, would have happily made Sarah my wife. I never thought I wouldn’t. We were still young when we first started dating, practically children. I was barely 20 and she was just 16 but my father insisted that it was time to start seeing each other. So we did. That lasted until I was nearly 23. I waited for her. I thought I loved her. She came up pregnant.” Phillip sighed. Taking a new interest in Daniel’s hand, which rested in his own. “We never had sex. Not once. Father immediately blamed me until I told him that I’d never… consummated. He laughed. He said no wonder she’d gone elsewhere I hadn’t staked my claim.”

“That’s fucked up.” Daniel sighed into his lover’s hair before adjusting the hotel pillow behind his head.

“I met Katharine after that. She was so shining and bright: a fiercely loyal woman and so pure that she could be a saint.” Phillip laughed at himself. “So I did what my father said. I made my claim. I whisked her home less than a year later and promised her she’d be my wife. Only when we finally made it home, after that first night in the hotel, my father laughed again. He couldn’t believe that I thought I wasn’t going to marry Sarah. He said that being with Katharine and the promise that I made her meant nothing. I told him no. We fought, but as always he won. Katharine went home and the Alliance tried to mediate. My father wasn’t having it. He said she’d be fine and that I didn’t have authority to offer for her without his approval. They sided with her family. I was so relieved… I thought someone had finally made my father do the right thing…”

“And he left the alliance instead.” Daniel finished the thought

Phillip nodded against his chest.

“So why didn’t you marry Sarah.”

“Her family wanted to marry into the Alliance. After we left they went elsewhere.”

“Rough.”

“It got tough after that. Our clan fought quite a few wild clans until father died. I managed to scrape my way to the top after that.”

“And now you’re stuck cleaning up his mess.”

“It’s fine. The mess was my fault in the first place. I had no business dragging Katharine into that mess.” Phillip shook his head, “And now I’ve managed to mess Bella’s would be marriage up as well.”

“I was never interested in marrying her.”

“I know, but where am I going to find someone that she wants as much as she wanted you?”

“She’ll find someone.” Daniel petted through Phillip’s hair, “You’re a good Alpha.”

“And will I still be after this?”

Daniel looked down at his mate, “What do you mean by that?”

“Which one of us is Dominant? Is it you because you… well you’re the one that-“

“That fucks your sweet ass.” Daniel growled in a low voice before sliding his hand down to cup Phillips butt.

“Yes.” Phillip sighed happily, “Or is it me because I’m already an Alpha.”

“Neither.” Daniel chuckled. “We share dominance. And if and when I rule my father’s pride we’ll worry about that then.”

“We can’t be two separate Alphas. You need to rule your pack here and mine is in Italy.” Phillip ducked his head. “I don’t see how this will work.”

“Are you giving up on me already, pup.” Daniel purred. “I want you and you want me.” Daniel tipped Phillip’s chin up before placing a soft kiss there. “The rest will work.”

. . .

“Please leave the room for a moment, Alpha Maremma.” Pride Leader Kurokyou looked at him with sharp eyes. “I’d like a word with my son.”

“Of course, Pride Leader Kurokyou. I understand.” Letting go of Daniel’s hand was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do.

Daniel stopped him at the door, “Stay.”

“No.” Phillip shook his head, “You and your father should talk.”

“I will be out in a minute.” Daniel kissed him gently, ignoring Phillip’s attempt to back away and pulling the man in for an even deeper kiss. “I will have you, Phillip. I promise.”

With an empty nod, Phillip agreed. “I’ll be just outside.” He took a deep breath to fill the hole in his chest, but only succeeded in expanding it. It was like stepping back in time, seeing the stone cold look on Pride Leader Kurokyou’s face as his son asked for his hand. The colder reply hadn’t been surprising. Looking back on their interaction, he couldn’t imagine how he let Daniel convince him this was a good idea. Of course Daniel’s pride leader wouldn’t approve. Not after all of that. Not after Katharine and the shame of his Clan. No parent would approve of that. Phillip ducked his head and pushed through the front door.

. . .

“Father, I will mate with him.” Daniel hissed and straightened his back into one uncomfortable line. “I don’t care what reservations you have about our abilities to run to clans or about his history.”

“Do you honestly think that we’re so short sighted as to pay attentions to what his clan was under his father’s rule.” His mother rolled her eyes, “You have responsibilities to our pride, Daniel.”

“And you have two other sons that can give you offspring and run your pride if you think I’m no longer fit.”

“We didn’t say that.” His father growled.

“No but you question my judgment when choosing a mate?”

“You hated that man less than a year ago. Now you say that you love him. You were courting his sister and then you fought to deny a proposal. Now you chose this. Are we supposed to just nod our heads and let you make your choices?” His father roared, “We are your Pride leaders and your parents.”

“I will relieve you of one duty. I withdraw from the pride. Michael can inherit and you only have to be my parents. In which case, I don’t need your approval.” Daniel gritted his teeth, “I’m going to my mate. We will leave your territory immediately, Pride Leader Kurokyou.”

“Daniel!”

“I’m sorry mother.” Daniel turned his back to the desk and heard the heavy door shut behind him. “Phillip.” He poked his head into the living room, nothing. “Phillip.” His bedroom sat empty again. “Phillip.” The kitchen, the garden, and the halls no one was anywhere to be found. A cold calm washed over his face as realization struck him.

. . .

Phillip didn’t have much to pack, so he tucked away the last of his things, separating Daniel’s clothing from his own in the dirty pile of clothing. The scent of Daniel’s shirt hit him hard and he buried his nose inside it like it was the last time he would ever smell his lover again. “I love you.”

The door hit the wall with a crash.

“Where the hell are you going?” Daniel slammed the door close, “I was scared as hell when I couldn’t find you in the house.” Moving to pull Phillip into his arms, he was shocked to me stepped away from.

“I’m sorry, Daniel.” Phillip’s cold voice didn’t waver as he dropped the shirt in his hand. “Coming here was a mistake.”

“You’re right about one thing. Talking to my parents was a waste of breath, but we’re fine.”

“What I mean, Clansman, is that I’m heading back to Italy.”

“What’s going on Phillip?”

“I received an offer from another wild pack. It seems that their alpha is looking for a larger pack alliance and he has a daughter my age.”

“You can’t be serious Phillip.” Daniel felt a growl rumble deep in his chest.

“Of course, I am.” Phillip laughed. “You’re Pride Leader refused our DM. Now we go our separate ways.”

“Phillip.” Daniel grabbed Phillip’s shoulder and pulled him back into his chest. “You can’t be serious.” He whispered into Phillip’s ear. “I want you.”

“And we don’t always get what we want, Daniel.” Phillip pulled away and yanked up the zipper of his bag. “I had a really fun time playing make believe but now it’s time to grow up and get back to my job as Alpha. I don’t have time to waste rolling around a playing with some gay cat.”

“This isn’t about me being gay and it isn’t about me being a cat. It’s about you running away because you’re scared that I’ll get away first.” Daniel screamed, “I annexed myself from my pride. I am not a Clansman any longer, Phillip. I’m just yours.”

Phillip stopped dead in his tracks, his hand trembling on the knob. The tears streamed down his face before he could stop them. “Daniel.” He took a deep breath and turned around. The soft look in his lover’s eyes cut into his gut. He brought one hand up to cup Daniel’s cheek, “Go back home, Daniel. I will not take you into my pack. Clansman or no clansman, I will not bring you down. You’re pride needs you and you’re family loves you. I will move on.”

“And what if I won’t?” The kiss he pressed into Phillip’s palm. “I love you, Phillip. I don’t think I can get over you.”

“You’re going to have to.” Phillip twisted his hand away. “I have business to attend, clansman.”

“I’m not letting you go.” Daniel shoved Phillip into the wall of the room, “I’m not letting you run away from me.” His lips smacked into Phillips before he shoved his tongue against Phillips. “Tell me you don’t want me, Phillip.” He didn’t give Phillip a chance to answer, tearing Phillip’s shirt from his skin. “I’m not letting you go unless you can.” Phillip’s pants unzipped easily, leaving him caught in the arms of his shirt and struggling to fight with his pants.

“Stop-“

“No. I’m not stopping.” Daniel picked up his lover, catching his flailing fists with his hands before shoving him down on the bed. Another few angry tugs and Phillip’s pant leg tore and released his foot, shoe and all. Daniel growled as he struggled to hold Phillip against himself, kiss his mate, and find the lube hidden in the sheets all at once. “I’m going to remind you that you’re mine. I’m going to fuck you so hard you won’t ever get my scent out. You won’t even be able to walk.”

Phillip moaned at the threat, glad that their earlier love making eased the way inside him as Daniel unzipped his pants.

“Mine.” Daniel growled and shoved into his lover. “You’re so fucking tight. How can you still be so tight?” He captured Phillips lips again and gripped the spread thighs of his lover, pulling Phillip’s hips up off the bed as he slammed into his lover.

The rasp of Daniel’s zipper against his inner thighs brought a gargled moan to Phillips lips. He shoved one hand down Daniel’s back, clutching his lover’s ass and shoving cloth aside to find more naked skin. With his other hand, he pushed and shoved at the top of Daniel’s shirt, popping buttons as he revealed his lover’s upper torso. “Touch me.”

“Tell me what you want.”

“I want you, Daniel.”

“Do you want me to stroke your dick? Do you want me to talk dirty to you?” Daniel growled and lapped at his lover’s jugular.

“Yes.” Phillip bucked his hips and his fingers scrambled over Daniel’s back.

“Yes to what.” The smirk on his lips was clear.

“Touch me. Talk to me.”

“Tell me you want me.” Daniel pleaded.

“I want you, Daniel. Please.” A low whimper burst from his chest. “Please.”

“Good pup.” Daniel reached between then and groped for Phillip’s dick. It was hard and pulsing already, “If I didn’t know any better you like it when I take you hard. I didn’t even bother to take off my clothes before I shoved my dick inside you.”

Moaning his approval, Phillip nodded his consent.

“You’re open for me and clawing for more, aren’t you?”

“More.” Phillip moaned.

“You’re so fucking hit like this. You taste so good,” Daniel lapped at Phillip’s cheek. “Have you ever wondered what you’re cock tastes like. Let me tell you, it’s so good.” Daniel’s fingers swirled around the tip of his lover’s cock before he brought his fingers to his lips and lapped at them. “You’re salty and bitter and just the right amount of sweet.”

Phillip reached down to jerk himself off, silencing his lovers tongue with his own.

“I’m close.”

Phillip nodded dumbly and tightened his hand as a rough palm massaged his balls. “Oh god.”

“Sooner or later you’re going to cry out to me and not god.” Daniel groaned and continued to push Phillip to the edge of orgasm.

“Shut up.”

“I’m going to mark you the way you marked me.” Daniel sank his teeth into the smooth, muscular flesh of Phillip’s shoulder.

Eyes wide with shock, Phillip went from broaching orgasm to shooting all over himself in ten seconds flat. His body went rigid with pleasure and his mouth remained open in a scream that he couldn’t manage to release.

“You get so fucking tight when you come.” Daniel grunted and spilled into his lover with another thrust. Daniel collapsed on his lover, lapping at the wound on Phillip’s neck.

Phillip kept his arms wrapped tight around Daniel’s waist.

“There wasn’t another pack.”

“Of course not,” Phillip buried his face in Daniel’s neck, “I didn’t want you to give up your family,”

Propping himself up on his elbows, Daniel looked down into his lover’s eyes, “I’m not giving up my family. Even if I have to give up my position as heir, that’s worth being with you. I thought you knew that.”

“How could I expect you to make that choice? I couldn’t do it. Not in all the time my father was Alpha did I go against his wishes.”

“You were a different man then.” Daniel kissed the tears forming in Phillip’s eyes, “I’d like to think if someone made you try and chose today that you’d make the same decision.”

“We’re going to make this work.” Phillip sighed, “I love you.”

“No more running away. I’m not chasing you all the way back to Italy a second time.”
