Chapter One

“Alright, Andy, do you know why you’re here?”

The youthful blonde didn’t answer him right away, and when he did it wasn’t in such a pleasant manner. “I am here because my parents can’t handle me anymore.”

The doctor sighed at him. “Andy, you’re here because you need help.”

“Stop calling me Andy.” The seventeen-year-old started to explain, “That was my name when I was living… now I’m dead.”

“No, Andy, you’re not dead.” The man put a hand on the teen’s shoulder. “You survived the accident, remember?”

“I drowned,” argued the boy. “Call me Arulé…”

The psychologist eyed Andy carefully. “Why Arulé?”

“That is the name I chose upon my death…” He finally looked up at the older gentleman. “I was not alone that day… There was another body in the water…”

“Was there?”

“Yes… It reached out… and took my hand…” Andy looked down again, down at the mentioned hand. “It was cold… and the face was so blank.” Closing his eyes, he thought back to it again, replaying the moment in slow motion inside his head. “It opened its mouth to speak to me, but I… I couldn’t hear it. My sight dimmed… my hearing was lost… I was drifting towards the afterlife…” He looked up again. “And those bastards dragged me back.”

Doctor Hiroshi sighed as he walked out of the room to see Andy’s parents. “He… doesn’t seem to have a strong grasp on reality anymore,” he tried telling them. “How many years ago was the accident?”

Andy’s mother whispered, “About… eight years ago… His father jumped in to save him.”

The doctor looked over his notes. “Andy claims to have seen another body down there, saying that it reached out and took his hand… Do you know if there was indeed another body under the water?”

“… There was, yes,” said Andy’s father. “The police found it soon after.”

The old man gave another sigh. “Bring him in again tomorrow. Hopefully we can get him to open up more.”

“Thank you, Doctor,” said the woman. “Thank you.”

They took their son home, and he almost immediately went right to his room, locking himself inside. His young sister went over to their mom and dad. “Still no luck?” she asked them.

The two adults shook their heads at her, and she looked up the stairs to Andy’s bedroom door. Her brother used to be so bright and cheerful, so kind and gentle, but after the accident of him falling off their father’s boat, he’s never been the same. He became so cold, distant, pushing everyone away. He had even taken their dead family cat out of her grave, and ripped out her eyes, keeping her locked away in his room. The girl wished she knew what had become of her brother, but also feared going near him.

Now safe in his room, he picked the rotting cat up off his bed, stroking its back. “Don’t worry, Kitty,” he whispered to it, “you’ll be back again soon, I promise.” He went over to his desk and placed the cat down on it. He was ready to accept his destiny now.

Focusing on the words that echoed throughout his memory of that fateful day, he brought his arms up. “Rotting corpse of death… your time has not yet come… The end that took you away was not to happen. Rise up.” He waited… and waited… still the cat did not rise again.

He sat on his bed and watched her. “Yeah, I guess I’d be embarrassed to come back too if someone said something like that to me.” He chuckled and walked over to her again. “Alright, Kitty, I’ll be serious this time.” He stroked her fur again, and then raised his hand above her. Concentrating the best he could, he sent out a portion of his own life energy… and Kitty’s tail started to move… and then she stood on rotting limbs. An eerie meow howled through the room, and he grinned. “Welcome back, Kitty,” he told her, and she looked up at him with her eye sockets. Stroking her again, he told her, “My name is Arulé, and I’ll be your personal master from now on…”

Later that night, Arulé walked down the stairs to find his family watching television. They didn’t seem to notice him so he made his way to the kitchen, grabbing one of the large butcher knives. He walked back out to the room they were in, and his sister screamed when she saw the knife in his hand. “Andy, what are you doing?” questioned his father.

“I told you before, I’m not Andy…”

“Andy…” The man carefully stepped closer to his son. “Put the knife down and we’ll talk, alright?”

Arulé laughed at him. “Talk? About what? How insane I am?” He grinned as he pointed the knife at the older man. “None of you even tried to understand me… you all just assumed that I was the crazy one. I told you I wasn’t Andy, but you never listen!”

“Alright… I’m sorry, Arulé…” His father carefully got closer to him. “We’ll listen to you now, I promise.”

“It’s too late… I don’t need a family… I need an army…” He glanced over at his sister momentarily. “And perhaps an heir…” His father wouldn’t allow that, so he suddenly reached out to take the weapon away, but Arulé was too quick in reacting to it, spinning around and plunging the knife into his father’s chest. His mother and sister screamed and ran to the door, but they didn’t get far. Kitty leapt in front of them and began hissing, threatening to bite them if they tried to get out through the door. Arulé chuckled quietly as he went over to the two, the blood still dripping from the knife. “Now where are you going, ladies? The fun has only just begun.” He grinned at them both. “Now…” he started, looking at his mother, “you can no longer give birth, so there is no reason to have you keep living. Just another pound of flesh.”

“A-Andy, please,” his mother pleaded, “please, don’t do this!”

“But, dear lady, you should feel honored… You’ll be one of our personal bodyguards…”

“No… no, please, realize what you’re doing, Andy…”

His gaze turned cold, no more humor in his eyes as he growled, “I am not Andy!” and he struck her with the blade, slitting her throat, cutting deep into the flesh. His sister screamed out and cried, and he looked down at her. “As for you…” She looked up at him, fear swelling up within her. His stare softened, though, and he dropped the knife. “… You’re the only one… that should live a normal, full life…” Kneeling down in front of her, he whispered, “Forgive me, Princess… You may leave now. Go to the city… and never speak of this… If you do… I’ll send Kitty after you.” Glancing at her face he said, “Do you understand me?”

Unable to speak, she could only nod at him. Minutes later, he opened the door for her, and she was able to run away. She didn’t look back, she couldn’t. After all, she had just witnessed her own brother murder both of their parents… and now she had to forget it all or risk talking about it. She began to feel it was cruel of him to let her go, for she highly doubted she could be quiet about it forever. She hesitated at the bridge, looking down at the freezing water below. Did he really expect her to stay silent about this? Fearing whatever consequence he would force upon her, she jumped down, crashing into the chilling depths. She soon noticed what her brother had seen that fateful day, as the hand reached out and took hers…
