Encountering the Strange and Magical

The Dream Catcher

“He shall protect you from the terrors of the night.”

Written by Raven of Darkness Shadows

First Nightmare: Encountering the Strange and Magical

It all started when he first died. He did not want to move on yet; he was not ready to leave everything behind, but knew that there was no way for him to return. However, that’s when he felt the calling and followed it to a strange small building in the middle of the city. Inside was a woman telling a young girl of her future love-life. The youthful ghost rolled his eyes. “Fortune tellers are so fake,” he muttered, then realized that the woman had started grinning at him after the girl left.

“Fake, are we?” she inquired, putting a closed sign on the door. “I can do so much more than you think, Cassian,” she told him, looking up at him again.

Cassian stared at her. “How the hell do you know my name?” he demanded. “And how the fuck can you see me?!”
“I have special powers,” the woman told him, still smiling. “You may call me Ruelle.”

“Ruelle, huh…?” Cassian looked around the building some more. There were so many different kinds of scented candles, incense and burners, statues said to have spiritual powers, tarot cards, and other things claiming to be magical. He didn’t believe the items to be magical at all, though, but Ruelle was a whole ‘nother story. “I can return you to the world of the living,” she told him, “but there’s a cost.”

Cassian’s eyes widened. “Okay, what’s the cost?” he quickly asked her, wanting to return to life as soon as he could.

“You must work for me,” she answered, her grin never faltering. “Dream catchers are becoming popular again, but their magic isn’t as strong as it used to be. So, you will replace that magic, and when someone has a horrific nightmare, you will be there to save them from the nightmarish parts of the dream.”

“You’ve got to be kidding me…”

“Do you want to return to the world of the living?”

The young man felt stuck. He missed being alive so much, but did he really want to become a knight for those with nightmares? Sighing, he said to her, “Fiiine, I’ll do it.”

“Good boy. Now then, to make sure you don’t run away…” With a snap of her fingers, a black collar appeared around Cassian’s neck, a leash running from it to Ruelle’s hand. Tugging on it, she brought Cassian’s falling to his knees. He glared up at her, and she simply laughed at him. “You can’t escape the deal you made with me now.” She tied the leash to the leg of her table, then walked over to the store door and took the closed sign off, returning to her table, a young girl following her in. “Please, look around,” Ruelle told her. “I have many things here, including working dream catchers…” She said the last part while looking straight at Cassian.

“Do they really work?” the girl asked, her light brown hair coming out of its braid a little.

“Indeed they do,” Ruelle promised her. “Would you like to purchase one?”

“Yes please!”

Kristen smiled happily as she walked home that afternoon, her new dream catcher in her bag. She would finally be rid of those nightmares of super-sized creatures trying to kill her. She never talked to anyone about them; she felt too embarrassed to admit something like that. Still, tonight she could finally get some rest.

When she got home, she said hello to her mom and brother, then ran to her bedroom, taking the dream catcher out of her bag. She looked at her walls, deciding to ask her mom to help her put the dream catcher up on the wall. “I’m surprised you bought one,” her mother commented after putting it up. “Are you having bad dreams?”

“Uh, yeah… kinda… plus, it looks cool, right?” Kristen said, feeling embarrassed again.

“Yeah, it does.”

Later that night, Kristen lay awake in her bed. She was still afraid to sleep, but she wanted to trust the psychic’s words. I hope it really works, the girl thought. I really need to sleep… After a few more minutes of doubt and trying to believe, the girl fell asleep.

It wasn’t long before she found herself in her back yard, a large group of people hanging out with her. Normally she wouldn’t even talk to so many different people, but this was a dream, and she was actually enjoying herself a good bit. They were all laughing and having a good time, until she heard a rustling in the grass, and looked over towards the bushes. Out came a giant, poisonous lizard, and it began charging the group of people. Kristen lost the ability to scream out as everything went into slow motion. It looked as though it was the size of her back door, and could probably break it down if she even tried to get inside to hide from it.

Just before it sunk its teeth into her, it screeched out in pain as the blade of a sword slashed through it, from the back all the way to the front. Kristen was still frozen in fear as the lizard turned away from her, tripping her with its tail. The girl felt a light pain in her ankle, but forgot all about it when she saw the person trying to save her. With fluffy wings as black as the nighttime sky, long dark hair cascading over glowing red eyes, and wearing a black outfit that seemed to be a perfect fit on him, the young man stared the creature down, his slimy sword vanishing, leaving sparkles behind before they too faded from sight. Making a magical circle in the air with his hands, the dark angel made the lizard get sucked up into the ring. “That was way too easy,” he said dusting off his hands, but was then tackled from behind by another before it started charging after the girl like the other had. “Oh, fuck,” he whispered to himself, preparing for more battling and saving.

Ruelle laughed at her messy “assistant” Cassian. “You’re so slimy,” she told him, laughing more.

“There was five of those fucking things!” he shouted. “Now change me back, damn it!”

“But you look better this way,” she joked.

“I don’t want to look good for you!”

“Okay… if you insist.” Ruelle snapped her fingers and Cassian’s wings poofed away, his appearance returning to normal: short black hair, very light gray eyes, black jeans, and a black t-shirt. “Now go wash up.”

“How the hell does a ghost “wash up”?” Cassian wondered.

“Go play in a spiritual bathtub. It’s upstairs,” Ruelle told him, then started counting her money. Using this boy was a great idea.
