Chapter One
Alex drove through the sparring forests following the winding rode as his teenage son sat beside him in the rental car flipping through a magazine.
“David, put that down and look out the window, isn’t it beautiful?” He asked at the sight of clear blue skies few floating clouds and the sweep of lush green forests surrounding them.
“When will we get there to meet Dad?” At seventeen David was a younger and slimmer version of Alex’s ex-husband. He had shinny copper hair that fell below his shoulders and green eyes with the same long straight and handsome bone structure. Tall and slim he had a delicate body and was just past his awkward stage growing into his limbs.
Alex on the other hand could be called more beautiful than handsome, at age thirty-three he had defied time. With his straight black hair that fell past his ears and chin wrapped in a ponytail, his almond shaped blue eyes and pale porcelain skin. Like David, he was tall and slim taking care of his body as he aged by following an extensive diet plan and rigorous exercise, as an artist he could afford to make his own time.
David lived with him after the divorce, when Alex had been sixteen he had become pregnant by John. They had loved each other those first few years into their marriage, but they had struggled financially as well. When John ha finally taken a job as a business executive things had finally been looking up, but Alex had not known the extent of his husband’s dealings in his new career or the new promotions they entailed which had included a secretary.
After the first year of John’s promotion Alex had filed for divorce and David had never really forgiven him for it. He now spent his summers away from home being shuttled to John’s home and with his new stepparent and back again to Alex’s home.
David resented Alex for what he saw as Alex’s inability to forgive his father after twelve years of marriage, which had lead to arguments. David leaving for the summers depressed Alex but he knew his son needed to spend time with his father.
“We’ll get there soon, maybe in two or more hours,” Alex drove through the vacant roads, John was to meet them at a mountain lodge deep in the mountains. He would be spending a week there with David while finishing up some business and then they would both fly back to Miami to John’s house to spend the rest of the summer at. Alex would have rather had John pick up David at the airport, but John had been insistent he had a lot of work to do up at the lodge that he couldn’t be bothered. Alex had thought to delay David’s trip and send him a week after to Miami, but David had wanted his summer to be fully spent with his father and had offered to drive there himself. Alex wouldn’t allow such a thing and this was where they stood, driving the small rental car up towards the lodge to meet John.
They had already spent four hours driving towards the lodge having stopped at a diner two hours ago for lunch. The place had been comfortable with the smell of coffee permeating the air, a few truck drivers sat on the stools at the bar of the diner as Alex and David had taken up the table near the front where they both ordered toast and eggs, an iced tea for Alex and a diet coke for David. They had gotten back on the road without too much trouble, but it was then that Alex had begun to take a feeling of unease.
As they made their way deeper into their drive and left the hints of community behind, he began to suddenly realize just how really isolated they were. No houses, no hotels, no signs of rest stops, just more trees that stood tall and barricaded them from the world outside and the people. He clutched the steering wheel and brushed a stray lock of hair from his face “David? Honey?” he asked.
David looked at his Dad and mumbled “What?” magazine still in his hand.
“Why don’t you call your Father? My cell is in my bag, can you get it for me?”
“Sure,” David reached for the leather brown bag with its intricate stitching and burned insignia of a bird and his father’s initials on the interior of the leather strap. Alex had had it made while on trip to Guatemala, and had never stopped using it. David opened the flap and dug into the bag before finding the familiar outline of his Dad’s phone and taking it out. He flipped it open, both his Dad’s and his face looking up at him and scrolled the contacts page highlighting his Father’s name, John, before dialing.
After a few seconds he quickly shut it “It says no reception,” David tried again.
“That can’t be right,” Alex got nervous “Try again.”
“I am, it says the same thing, I guess were out of the area, maybe we’ll get reception when we get to the lodge.”
“That won’t be until two hours,” muttered Alex “Look at the map and see if you can find any rest stop areas along the way.”
David unfolded the map that had been tucked between the passenger and middle seat and looked down at the map “Um, where are we right now?”
“The sign an hour ago said were in Canyon Road, we should be coming to Nestle Lodge pretty soon to take the road up there.”
David frowned “That can’t be right, it says we should have seen a rest stop area already then,” he shrugged “maybe the map’s outdated or something, if we’re nearing the lodge then we won’t have to wait much longer, why?”
“I just—things just don’t feel that right,” he admitted and caught his son’s sheepish smile “Oh come on! Were in the middle of nowhere, excuse me for being worried.”
“Dad, you worry about everything. We’re nearly there anyway, why don’t you stay the night so you don’t have to make your way down at night.”
“And see your father longer than I have to? No thank you.”
David laughed “You’re being paranoid right now, imagine when you’re driving all alone at night! Besides it’ll be safer if you wait until morning.”
Alex grimaced and sighed, “All right, you’re right. But shoot—we should have told your Father ahead of time to order me a room, try calling him again when we start to take Nestle Lodge road and tell him I’m spending the night.”
“Okay,” David leaned back and folded the map he put his magazine away as well and looked out the window his shoulder length copper hair glowing red from the pilfered sunlight that hit. Alex couldn’t suppress the smile that tugged at his lips as he looked at his son, no matter how much he and John had argued, or the ill feelings still between them he couldn’t help but thank God how lucky he was to have been blessed with a son like David.
He really was lucky.

The squad car was hidden between the folds of trees, inside a man in a police officer’s uniform sat, the radio squawking with the sounds of oncoming reports. His reflective sunglasses glared from under the rim of his police hat uniform, as did the decorative badge that was pinned to the left of his broad chest. His officer issued gun lay at his hip, snuggled in his holster as he waited, eyes on the road for the familiar color of a white Chevy.
Beside him a folder had been carelessly tossed, the edges of pictures peeking through the manila folder of a father and son leaving a diner.
At the sight of a white blur that rocked the vehicle slightly, his heart gave a jolt and his blood was filled with adrenaline, he started the car and shot off after them turning on the police siren. He dug for his radio and it squawked in greeting as he gave a thin smile “I got them,” he said as the white Chevy crawled slowly to the side of the road before stopping. Putting the car in park and turning the safety off on the gun and fingering the small spray bottle of chloroform in his hand before shoving it into his pocket he turned the siren off and made his way towards the car, fingering the bottle with two fingers.
-
“Jeez Dad, only you can get a ticket in the middle of nowhere,” giggled David as he watched his Dad stress.
“Shut up,” growled Alex as he shut the ignition off and put the car in park. He nervously looked up into his rear view mirror, hands secure on the wheel as he watched the tall and powerfully muscular police officer make his way towards them.
David groaned in impatience and brushed his jeans with his hands “I hate cops,” he pouted.
“I said hush,” Alex could feel the feeling of unease grow in him as the police officer walked to his side door, though he did not know why.
“Evening,” drawled the police officer as he stared at them, they were reflected through the lens of his sunglasses “Know why I stopped you?”
“No officer, was I speeding?”
“Sir, you were going around forty-five in a forty miles per hour zone,” he leaned his powerful arms above Alex’s rental car his mere presence waving red flags at Alex.
“I’m sorry officer.”
“You should be, you could have gone and hit something.”
“Like what?” asked David, he hated the way the cop was trying to intimidate them “We’re in the middle of nowhere.”
The officer stared at them through his lenses but all David and Alex could see were their faces reflected back at them as the officer’s mouth tensed in irritation.
“I suggest you keep your pretty little mouth shut, before I shut it for you boy,” Alex could feel the fear pouring off him as well as the indignation he felt at the way the officer had just spoken to his son, it was highly inappropriate, and he wouldn’t stand for it either way.
“Excuse me Sir, if you’re going to give me a ticket for speeding could you please give me one now, we have to meet my husband soon,” he failed to mention it was his ex-husband but the police officer was scaring him, and the sooner they could be away from him the better, “I also don’t like the way you spoke to my son it was out of line.”
“You telling me how to do my job?” the dead tone in which he spoke made him shudder.
“No, but we really need to be going—
“Step out of the vehicle.”
“I—
“I said step out of the vehicle,” he opened the door and stepped to the side to make room for Alex the same time David touched his arm in alarm.
“Dad?” his green eyes looked to him with worry.
Alex unlatched his seat belt “It’s okay honey,” he said trying to sound calm, he stepped out of the car as the police officer’s hand grabbed his forearm and bodily moved him to his patrol car.
He shoved him against the car, arms behind him. He kicked his legs open “Don’t move,” he growled and began to slowly pat him down, his large hard hands roaming Alex’s legs and thighs making their way up to his hips and ass.
Alex knew the situation wasn’t right. The way the man was touching him was anything but professional. Massaging his calf muscles, lingering to touch the inside of his thigh to grabbing two handfuls of ass cheeks before clamping on his narrow hips and tiny waist.
When the police officer shoved his crotch against Alex’s ass, Alex pushed away with a startled gasp the same time the officer grabbed his arms and turned him around and pulled him against him kissing him squarely in the mouth, digging teeth and tongue into his mouth as Alex gagged and struggled.
The passenger door was thrown open “Dad!” cried David as he watched the large police officer kiss his father, it was all the distraction needed when the police officer’s head whipped to the side to glare at the interruption. Alex struck a kick against the man’s erection allowing enough time for him to let go as Alex pushed off and yelled, “Run!”
David ran off into the trees, Alex not far behind as he darted past the trunk of trees the police officer behind them in pursuit. He caught up to David and grabbed his arm leading him to a fallen tree making David duck behind its leaves, “Stay here,” he whispered as David shook, his forehead glistening with sweat green eyes wide with fear “Don’t come out until I tell you to.”
“Daddy?” he whispered back as Alex brushed his copper hair behind his ears.
“It’s okay baby, I’ll take care of it,” he left him to hide and made his way towards a brush having caught sight of a long fallen branch to pick up and taking position a few feet away from the sight he had hidden David at.
The policeman stumbled into the clearing the same time Alex began to swing the branch at him catching him across the shoulder before swinging it again to hit him above the head. The man tried to catch a grip of the branch but tore leaves instead with his bare hand as he kneeled in position. Just as Alex brought the branch down to hit him again, the man grabbed his ankle and pulled dropping Alex on his back.
He grabbed hold of the branch and threw it away a few feet from where David hid. He dragged Alex by the leg closer to him pulling on his jeans as he unzipped himself from his uniform pants.
Out of breath, heart hammering against his ribcage Alex tried to shove him off crying out in mortification and fear as his pants were pulled down his hands trapped in the man’s grip. The feeling of the man’s erection against his thigh made him recoil, he struggled as he was pawed at.
“Oh god, oh god, please no, please no,” he whimpered as the man licked a long line against his neck leaving the disgusting wetness of his spit. Alex felt the dirt, rocks and sticks digging into his bare back where his shirt had ridden up.
Alex slipped his wet hand from the man’s hold and shoved at his face, but he merely aimed a backhanded slap that sent Alex reeling to the dirt as he grabbed him again.
“Beg you fucking bitch!” he growled and spread Alex’s legs roughly apart seating himself between his legs erection pressing against the ring of muscle there.
The click of a gun and the black nozzle pressed against the man’s head froze him in place “Honestly Frank, I thought I told you once already not to fuck the merchandise,” the woman stared passively at the two of them before darting her eyes towards the fallen tree “You come out too!”
Frank moved away from Alex, growling a little and in revenge prodded Alex with his erection one last time, which made him whimper, before getting up.
Alex dragged himself up to his elbows and quickly picked up his jeans, with shaky hands he pulled them over his hips, his wrists still burned from where Frank had held him down.
David poked his head from his hiding place and quickly ran to his Dad’s side grabbing him. Alex wrapped his arms around his son, trying to sooth his fear but at the same time couldn’t help the shuddering breath leave his body as he watched the woman and Frank.
The woman was a brunette, her hair wrapped in a short bun at the top of her head. She wore light washed jeans, a flowy blouse and a hard leather belt across her waist. She was plain looking woman, with a hard mouth and cold blue eyes even as she pointed the gun at Frank who was slowly dressing her eyes remained on them both.
Alex tore his eyes away from Frank who tucked himself into his uniform pants and shuddered as he held his now crying son in his arms.
“Please,” he begged staring at the woman trying to look for mercy or compassion in her eyes “Please, just let us go.”
The woman stared at him for a moment more before glancing at Frank who had finally dressed and brushed off the dirt from his knees before turning to them and pointing the gun at them “Get up.”
“Please,” Alex tried again tears threatening to drop as he held his crying son even closer.
Her eyes became harder “I said get the fuck up!” she yelled as Frank walked forward and grabbed David’s arm and bodily pulled him away from Alex’s embrace.
“Dad!” David cried out as Frank dragged him away.
“Wait! Wait!” Alex got to his knees and ran to them, Frank let go of David and he ran to his Dad crying and shaking unwilling to let Alex go.
“Let’s go,” she said, and Alex followed them out back to the road. He vehemently prayed for the apparition of any cars on the road but knew in his heart it was impossible. They had spent hours on the road and had not come close to another car, its was highly unlikely he’d be blessed with one. And so they followed her as she lead them to the parked squad car, Frank opened the back seat. With the gun still pointing at them Alex got in numb and David clinging to him crying in fear.
They shut the door and locked it behind them.
“I’ll drive them back, you get rid of the car,” she ordered and walked to the other side of the car.
Frank turned to walk away but stopped at the call of his name by the woman “If I catch you trying to sample the merchandise again, I’ll kill you where you stand.”
Frank visibly paled and rushed off towards the rental car as she settled into the patrol car and put the gun on top of the dashboard. She quietly turned the ignition on and waited for it to settle before darting back onto the road with no effort. Alex watched as they left the sight of the rental car behind his arms still wrapped around his grieving son. It wasn’t until maybe an hour later when they passed the sign of Nestle Lodge and drove away from it that the tears began to flow and all Alex could do was hold his son closer.
