Soul Mate
Ch: 1- Idiot
One would think that if a hole suddenly appeared on a wall and your surroundings suddenly changed, that you would panic or become frightened. One would think that you would avoid interaction with you new surroundings, but everyone has their moment of stupid, unquestioning, curiosity. – Curiosity 101
My friend Karen and I were minding out own business when it happened. We were at work at the time and I was sweeping the lobby while Karen was in the back washing the dishes. It was fairly noisy in the store with the radio and machines making noise so it was a bit odd when a complete silence took over the store. My ears heard the odd silence and I stopped my sweeping. Before my eyes I saw the lights in the room dim and some even flickered off, the floor began to mold and stain, everything began to age as if someone pressed the fast forward button on life.
There was a crashing sound as if someone had fallen and I heard Karen scream. Quickly, I rushed to the back of the store to find her on the ground. “Are you okay, Karen?”
I helped her up from her position on the floor. She had fallen as if someone had pushed her forward. “I think I’m okay…But there was this odd explosion from the back wall that was why I fell.”
Looking behind her I saw that the wall had a large hole in it. Looking around I also noticed the same decaying effect occurring in the kitchen. What was going on?
Karen walked over to the hole in the wall and peered into the darkness on the other side. “Karen,” I asked, “What are you doing?”
“The parking lot is supposed to be on the other side right, but its pitch dark. I want to see what is on the other side.”
Without another word, she walked through the gaping hole.
“Karen you are an idiot!” I yelled. I waited for a response but none came. Cursing I decided to run after her.
Ch: 2- Into the Darkness
“You’re an idiot!” I yelled to myself as I ran blindly in the darkness. “Even if she was in here it’s not like you could see her!”
The hole wasn’t just dark, it was void of any sound or wind. Even as I ran, my hair never flew behind me. It was almost like I wasn’t even running, yet I could feel my legs burn with effort.
Suddenly my foot connected with air instead of sturdy ground and I could feel myself falling. Before I had time to scream, my body collided harshly with an unknown object. My head hurt and I passed out; or so I assumed since I awoke in a dimly lit room…
I sat up slowly, my head throbbing with a terrible headache. My hands lay on a cold, black and white, tiled floor and looking around I realized how large the room really was.
Its ceiling towered over 13 feet and the walls spread about 19 feet in each direction. White pillars shot up from the floor to hold the tall ceiling and on those pillars were candle holders that held lit, black, candles. Other than that, the room was empty and silent.
I stood up, my legs throbbing like my head, and attempted to find a way out of the large room. I scanned the walls carefully and then I heard the sound of a piano. The music was spooky since it seemed to be erupting from a seemingly empty room. With not much choice, I headed toward the musical sound. There stood a white grand piano in the middle of the room. Had that always been there? As I came to stand beside it I saw the person who was playing the said instrument.
He stopped playing, hitting a sour chord as he did, leaving his fingers on the ivory keys. Slowly his red spiky head turned to face me. Green eyes met my blue eyes and though I expected some sort of anger from him that is not what I received. He only smiled kindly at me.
“Hello Shaun, its been a long time since I last saw you.” His fingers left the piano as he turned in his seat.
I lifted my eyebrow in confusion. “Do I know you?”
He stood up and I took a step back, but he grabbed my wrist before I could go any further. “I would hope that you would know me. I am you after all.”
I opened my mouth but I was speechless. How could he be me? “I’m your evil self. Everyone has a good side as well as a bad one.” He stated as he pulled me closer to his body.
“But you look nothing like me…” I struggled slightly as his arm wrapped around my waist.
“Of course not, I’m your opposite. I’m not you but at the same time I am you. You can call me Shane.”
“What are you doing?” I asked cautiously since I didn’t know Shane that well and he was being very intimate with me.
“I’m connecting with you. You want to find Karen right?” I nodded and Shane grinned wickedly. “Then let me inside you.”
Shane was intimately close to me, so much so that I could feel his breath on my face. I wasn’t too sure what he meant, but I wrapped my arms around him our bodies finally connecting, chest to chest and waist to waist. Before my stunned eyes Shane began to disappear and move into my body. I soon found my arms wrapped around myself when my body erupted in a fairly pleasant type of tremor.
Ch: 3- Chaos
I opened my eyes to find myself laying on the cement of the parking lot that was behind the store. Had I been asleep the whole time? I sat up and looked behind me and sure enough there was a gaping hole in the store wall with nothing but darkness on the other side.
“For someone who got straight A’s you’re not very smart.” A familiar voice echoed in my mind.
“So that really happened?” I asked Shane, which I suppose meant that I was talking to myself.
“Yes it did, bow get off your ass and start looking.” I flinched at Shane’s harsh tone, but did as he said.
Standing up I looked around the once thriving city that I lived in and my heart sank. It was almost as if a war had torn the city apart and a thousand years had passed, making trees and other foliage over run the ruins. I must have been out fold for a few hours because the sun was beginning to set causing a light fog to develop.
“You better hurry Shaun, or you’ll be running in the dark.”
I growled at Shane angrily, I knew that! But where would or could have Karen gone, that crazy girl way too curious and naive for her own good. With no real purpose or sense of direction I began to walk. I looked down the alley ways that I passed, peered into every open window, and tried to open several doors. Sadly most of the buildings were boarded up or torn down completely.
I approached the subway entrance and stared down the cracked, concrete, stairs that lead down into its dark pit. I was about to turn and continue my search elsewhere but Shane stopped me.
“Go down there.”
I glared down at the dark stair case. “I’m not going into another dark, unknown, place!”
“The sun is going to set in a few minutes…”
I almost turned around, “All the more reason for me not to go down there.” But Shane stopped me again.
“It’s safer down there.”
I looked up at the last few rays of light, “You’re evil Shane, why should I trust you? If it’s going to be dark out here it only means that the subway tunnel is going to be pitch dark.”
I found myself taking a step down the subway stairs and my heart began to speed up. Shane was controlling my movements. Not fully, but he could still control me. “I may be evil Shaun, but you are me and I wouldn’t endanger myself.”
I gulped down my fears and put my trust in Shane. As I took the steps, one by one, I asked “How are we going to be able to see down there?”
Slowly I approached the darkness ahead of me, “You’ll see.” It was the only answer I got from him before we entered the black void.
