Your Friends Hold The Lullabies

This is only my second story - my other one is named 'Under the Sea - You and Me'. I'm very new to writing, so please forgive me if this ends up rather bad. I've already got the next couple of chapters planned out, but at any rate I'd like to point out I've never tried writing stories before this website ^-^; Anyway, please enjoy!

Oh and by the way - this song is inspired by the song 'Look Up' by Stars. The chapters are named after lines in the song. Just so you know =D

The rain felt good. It soaked his body entirely - trailing in slow, secretive caresses down his sides. His head tilted back, eyes closed, arms outstretched to touch the freezing droplets as much as he could. His chest was bare - the water sliding down until it glistened and began to seep into his jeans. The floor was cold and hard against his bare toes - the ticklish drops making his toes curl each time one landed on them.

His hair was shoulder-length in a shaggy cut that was unseen as it was slowly saturated behind his head, dripping the water onto the floor behind him. His eyes flickered open to stare dully at the view, a small, relieved smile curling in the corners of his mouth. It was a very pretty view. Through the mist of the rain, the lights of the city illuminated the scenery below, casting a soft, inviting glow of yellow. He could have stared at it forever.

It was such a shame that he didn't have much longer to enjoy it.

Soon the pain would be over with - this time he couldn't fail. Who on earth could survive a 1,257 foot free-fall down into the land below? Nobody, that's who. This time there would be no turning back - no way he could be 'saved'. Was that what they called it? 'Saving' him? Hah! Everything they did only caused him more despair as he was forced to live through the never ending ache that overtook his entire being. Well this time they couldn't stop him. This time it was going to happen for sure.

He took a deep breath as he took a small step towards the edge - feeling the cool upwards rush of the wind against the tips of his toes. He giggled - a low, hysterical sound as he fixed his eyes on the sky. It was time to go. He closed his eyes, feeling the ground sway under his feet. His head felt fuzzy from the lack of air. Vertigo was not something he was used to. Something behind him called out to him - but he felt oddly detached. His head was spinning. With a vague gasp he felt himself waver - and he fell.

Lucas stepped into the elevator and stretched with a bright grin, never feeling more relieved that it was almost time for him to return to his own apartment building. He glanced out of the side of the glass elevator, where the windows flickered by rapidly as he sped upwards and gave a low whistle as he saw how much it was raining. It was getting late - or rather, it was very early in the morning - and everyone was probably long gone in the land of sleep by now, which he was thankful for. Being the 24 hour handyman of the apartment complex could get very annoying, especially since sometimes a few people only staggered back in the early hours of the morning and decided to get a little 'touchy-feely' with him. Which sucked mainly because it was only women who decided to hit on him.

Lucas was a strong man, with a tall, 6'2 build and lean muscles from working. His blond hair was cropped into many little layers that flicked out from his face like feathers, a small fringe messily falling into his warm brown eyes. Without trying to be vain, it was very fair to say that women were very much attracted to his playful puppy-dog look and crooked little smile that made them feel weak at the knees. It was such a shame - at least for them - that he was gay.

One of the newly-installed CCTV cameras had broken from the storm earlier. It was already calming down out there quite a lot, but the rain was still coming down pretty hard so Lucas was a little bit wary of going out there to fix it in such weather, but the sooner he did it, the more likely he was going to keep his job and his apartment. The only reason he got to stay there for free was because his big brother was the landlord of both the complexes. Fortunately, they were quite close together - almost side by side - but unfortunately in order for him to keep the free rent and earn money for food, he had to run between the two whenever something needed fixing. And in a place that held a lot of rowdy, hyperactive people, things got broken on a regular basis. In this case, it was the CCTV camera, although this time it wasn't because of some drunken moron knocking it over.

The doors opened and Lucas hurried out, attempting to shield himself from the rain outside. He looked around hurriedly, trying to remember where he'd installed the damn thing last week. He almost did a double take when he saw something pale and human-shaped standing near the edge and for a split second he foolishly thought it was some kind of ghost. But then he suddenly realized it was a person - a man.

"Hey!" he called out as he took a step towards him, reaching out through the rain to try and touch him. "Hey!! Step away from the edge!" he cried as he suddenly realized what he was doing.

He watched in horror as he man swayed left and right, half leaning forwards before suddenly crumpling and falling backwards. Lucas rushed forwards and reaching out - only managing to half-catch him before he hit the floor of the roof. It softened the blow, but there was a sharp thumping noise as he landed. Lucas staggered under the sudden weight, the sound making him wince as he stared down at the beauty who had fallen into his arms. His eyes were mainly closed and had rolled up into the back of his head. Lucas checked his pulse hastily, breathing a sigh of relief when he realized it was still there. His chest was rising and falling too - surely that was a good thing?

The camera forgotten, he maneuvered the body in his arms so he could scoop him up bridal style and hurriedly carrying him into the elevator. He felt around in his pocket for his cell phone as he knelt and held the unconscious man close, dialing for 911 as fast as he could.

"Hello? I'd like an ambulance please. I think there's been a suicide attempt..."

The next few hours were a blur to him - flashing lights and an an endless stream of nurses telling him to go this way and that. Eventually he found the right room, this time when he was allowed to go in, and he took a seat next to the mans bedside. This was so strange. He'd saved this guys life. The thought of it made him uneasy somehow. It was too surreal for him - more like something out of a weird soap drama he despised.

As if to reassure himself that the stranger was truly alright, he reached out and brushed his fingertips over his cheek. The man stirred under the touch and whimpered, twitching slightly under the tucked bedsheets. Lucas hushed him gently and patted his bony wrist with his fingertips, feeling slightly concerned over how delicate it felt. After a couple more twitches the sleeping figure sighed and settled back against the soft bedsheets, the lullaby of the hand and the comfortable mattress calming him into a deep sleep.

So what did you guys think? This is my first time with a story like this, so I feel a little weird for starting it off so darkly, but it will get better ^-^ Please tell me if you like it! Oh and reviews make me write faster! *hint hint*
