Pollution and Salt

Chapter One
Pollution and Salt

A solitary wolf stood on top of a house in the middle of a homely looking village, its head was thrown back and the mouth open just enough for the howling of a sad song hit into the cold twilight of darkness. Oddly enough, you could see a black collar, mostly hidden in it’s dark fur with three other silver necklaces hanging more loosely around its neck, while adoring the wolf’s ankle was a purple color oddly enough not falling off, seeing all that would make a sane person put their thoughts away of this being a regular wolf. Its coloration was a simpler copy of a raccoon’s pelt, only with the black rings on its tail they did not connect on the underside and instead of the white/gray, color with its black coat the wolf had a deep red, adding to that fact a much fluffier tail than a raccoon’s.

From the size of the wolf, being twice the size as normal, it screamed to you that this was a dire wolf if you knew your creatures, which would be one of the sacred creatures told in fairy tales to young innocent children at bedtime. Though in Mother Goose’s fairy tales, wolves are anything but innocent and they never have friends.

The wolf looked around with its sapphire colored eyes and diamond shaped ruby pupil, eyeing the snow covered sleeping houses. A single silver tear fell from its glazed eye while ending the song many wolves sang to the moon at this time. Long pointed ears were up and alert for any unusual sound as its powerful nose searched for silent danger. Almost immediately, the calling of an innocent could be heard through the twilight darkness humans called night.

Leaping from house to house like a kangaroo with four paws the strangely attired wolf made its way to the dying call. Landing seconds later on a small porch rooftop that was lightly covered in a snowy blanket, a little boy stood and had his eyes tightly closed, fists clutched at his sides and his tear stained face stretched to the sparkling stars above. “I only wish for a friend is that so hard to ask for?” The little human boy begged into the darkness of his own mind for a friend even if it was for just this night.

Cocking its head to the suffocating smell of salt water and fireplace smoke the wolf stared at the boy. *I wonder if he knows… a purity child…I will be your friend…for now anyway* Watching until the boy was about to collapse the huge wolf decided to make its presence known “Hrmmm!” The wolf whined in a high-pitched tone to get his attention but not loud enough to get others.

The small boy jumped so fast the wolf raised its paw as if it was stung and positioned it self to jump at the boy if he decided to fall over as he was now sitting a foot from the edge. “You’re, you’re a, you’re a, WOLF!” Stumbling closer to the edge of the small porch rooftop the wolf bowed its head and lowered its ears as if sadden by the boys display of distrust in the creature. *And you’re a small kid, almost a little, too small hmm you can’t be past 5years old * Glancing up but not moving her head, the wolf did a quick check up on the young child it’s eyes hidden under the long bangs of it’s pelt.

Sniffling he rubbed his runny button nose on the thin fibers of the pajama sleeve “Your not going to eat me, are you mister wolf?” rubbing his eyes clear of the salty water he stared at the bright eyed wolf with his own big chocolate colored eyes.

Sitting straight again the wolf cocked its head in question *Mister Wolf? I have been called many things in my life…but never a Mister Wolf* taking its huge paw, the dire wolf covered one of its eyes in a ‘just shoot me’ sort of look causing the child to look at ‘Mister Wolf’ funny. “Did I say something wrong? Are you a Lady Wolf? Are you a good Lady Wolf?” The chocolate-eyed baby seemed to grow bravery or complete stupidity but either way he got on his hands and knees and crawled closer trying to stare into the Lady Wolf’s eyes.

First the wolf turned away staring into the twilight darkness the stars looked like they were bouncing right back at you if you looked at them right now. *Should I tell him...no… silence for now I wouldn’t want him to tell anyone else*

Tilting its head, the wolf nodded twitching her ears to bring attention off her sapphire and ruby eyes. “Oh that’s so cute, can I touch you Lady Wolf? I’ve never touch a wolf before my mommy said wolves don’t live around here anymore boy was she wrong” the rambling just didn’t seem to end with the boy but for once she didn’t mind so much until he tugged on her ears that is...

He talked about his family, how his older brother was a jerk, and hurt him sometimes, and he rambled on about a cool dad that took him fishing when the days were cool and warm at the same time. He joked about his mother, saying she was a mean old witch in disguise. In addition to all that, he did talk about how sad he was the boy really had no friends at school to speak of, even though he tried to make some but they would all call him a freak and laugh, running away from him. *Life is such a mess* she thought to herself and decided to lighten the mood when salt water tinted the polluted air of the winter stricken village.

After a few hours of just nodding her head, licking his face while doing light barks she let him pet her belly as he try as he may to get her to play fetch. Which resulted in a small tennis ball collection stuck in nearby gutters, all and all this Lady Wolf basically let him do as he pleased, but not before long did sleep became inescapable, he cuddled up in the small warm crescent space her body made for him and slept.

They slept on the rooftop of the small porch until the rays of sunlight hit the top of some of the bigger houses and the call to awaken hit the wolf like a train. Lifting her head, she looked around not wanting to get up knowing she would have to leave. Nevertheless, awaken she did, with a yawn she looked around again, blinking with dulling senses.

Lady Wolf, as she would be called from now on, slipped out of the boys grasp and gave a warning lick at the chocolate eyed boy’s matching chocolate hair and jumped from house to house to get back to her ‘home’ in almost perfect timing too.

Chocolate eyes watched dreamily as the huge wolf leapt away not noticing the tall but lean woman with chocolate hair and nasty green eyes open his bedroom door to look for him “Troels! What in heavens, are you doing out there? Get in here right this instance young man! You are so grounded! Wait till I tell your good for nothing father about this!” Yanking the fragile boy into the bedroom, she gave him a swift smack on the bottom forcing a cry from his lips and salty tears from his eyes.

Tired from the few hours of sleep the father of the boy placed him back into bed with strict orders to his ‘loving’ wife to leave him alone. “Lady Wolf!” Troels wept in mumbled voices as he watched his brother lock the windows.

After locking them, he turned toward the much smaller boy “You should have fallen off the damn roof, you dumb runt at least then maybe she wouldn’t be in a prissy mood all day.” His blonde haired green-eyed brother snickered shutting the curtains and left the room. “I hope Lady Wolf comes back tonight. I need you so much right now.” Sniffling he snuggles into the cocoon of covers.
