The Family Name
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Benedict De Bolbec, first son of the famous noble De Bolbec’s. He was their pride and joy; the one meant to inherent their name, their company and their fortune. He had studied at the finest schools, eaten the finest food and socialized only with people of the highest class. He never failed, he never gave up and he never complained. Suffice to say, his parents believed he was perfect. The perfect son, the perfect student and the perfect noble… there was only one problem with him, one… imperfection. He was human.
A human born to two full blood vampires.
“We can’t do this against his will Liam; he’ll hate us if we do.” The words were whispered softly, the harsh rasp of voices permeating the dark hallway outside of Benedict’s elaborate bedroom door. “He’s our son… we can’t make him change his life.”
“That is why we have to do this Annabelle, he’s our son.” Liam’s words were whispered back just as softly as he looked over at his wife. “Benedict is our eldest son, he will pass on our name, he will inherent our estate… he is our lifeline. We’re getting too old Bell; we have to pass on the torch.” He murmured, his hand sliding gently through Annabelle’s deep black hair. It was a calming movement, one he knew worked. They had been together for hundreds of years; it would be remiss of him not to know. “We only have a couple weeks before he’s twenty one and it’s too late… we gave him all this time to make the decision on his own, it’s time for us to do it for him.”
“You can’t force him, you just can’t! I won’t help you with this!” Annabelle’s voice was suddenly louder then a whisper, more like a shout that echoed in the eerie hallway. “Let him hate you, I won’t have any part of this.” She spun on her heel after that, quickly walking away from her husband and her son’s room. The clack of her heels echoed down the hallway, his skirts billowing behind her until she turned the corner, disappearing from Liam’s sight.
Liam just sighed, shaking his head slightly as he watched his wife leave. He should have known that she wouldn’t help… she had those newfangled beliefs that everyone should be able to make their own decisions in life… it was just wrong. Benedict was a human and he couldn’t have that, his son had been a human long enough. It would only take a few drops of his blood to change his sons physiology… to change him from a human to the pure blood vampire he was supposed to be. They should have done it years ago… it never should have dragged on for this long.
“Benedict?” Liam’s voice was a whisper once again as he walked into his son’s bedroom, carefully closing the door behind him. “Are you awake?” He asked softly, carefully settling down beside Benedict on his bed. His own son… sleeping at night, it just wasn’t right. He was supposed to be a vampire, vampires hunted at night. “There’s something I need to talk to you about.”
Benedict awoke slowly, his bright blue eyes fluttering open as he looked up at his father. “Father…” The word came out on a yawn as he stretched, arching his back before letting himself fall back against the bed again. “What is it? Why can’t it wait?” He asked, rubbing at his forehead as he looked up. He blinked a few times when he saw his father bite into his own wrist, drawing his thick, potent blood. “Father… why are you-”
Liam cut off his son’s words, biting his lip as he gripped Benedict’s chin harshly, forcing him to open his mouth before he held his wrist about it, letting his blood drip into the younger mans open mouth. “I’m sorry Ben, this has to be done and it has to be done at night, we don’t want your skin burning as you change.” He held his son as he fought against his hands, using his enhanced vampire strength to hold the boy to the bed as he bled into his mouth. It was a messy and painful process but it had to be done. If they waited until after Benedict turned twenty one, the change wouldn’t work and it would most likely kill the boy. He just couldn’t let that happen.
The De Bolbec name had to be carried on.
Benedict cried out when the first signs of the change started, his body convulsing on the bed as he fought against his fathers hands. “No!” He cried out, his body trembling as he tried to push the still bleeding wrist away from his mouth. “No! I don’t want it! Stop it!” After another violent flail, Benedict was choking on the blood pouring down his throat, tears starting to leak from his eyes as the pain finally set in, making him feel like he was a hundred pounds heavier. “Please… stop…” His breathing was heaving, his body twitching under the other mans as the small physiological changes took effect, altering his life forever. His eyes darkened, his body jerking harshly one last time… Then his breathing stopped.
Benedict De Bolbec was dead.
“It’s done.” Liam murmured softly, finally letting Benedict out of his death grip and sitting back. He licked at his own wrist, closing up the bite wound before he wiped the blood from his son’s mouth. “It had to be done…” He whispered, trying to remind himself that his heartless act had been for the best… trying to reassure himself that it was best for Benedict to take on his heritage and living for eons as a vampire. “It was for the best.”
Benedict coughed harshly when he suddenly woke up, his body jerking again as his eyes shifted to a deep red, fangs sprouting from where his canine teeth were prior. “Ahhggh…” The noise was a deep, guttural sound of pain forced from Benedict’s throat. He looked up at his father with wide, pained eyes, his hand clenching over his stomach as he coughed violently again. It was like his could barely breathe, it felt like his chest was compressed and the weight just kept getting heavier and heavier. It was excruciating, it hurt so damned bad. He jerked away when his father pulled him up but his body instinctively knew what he had to do.
He needed his sire’s blood.
The first sink of sharp fangs into soft, yielding skin yielded the end of Benedict’s life as a human. He was disgusted with himself even as he fed for the first time, taking the needed blood deep into his body. His nails grew, sharpening and digging into his fathers shoulders before he suddenly pulled back from his neck, blood still glistening on his lips. He looked up at Liam, his eyes slowly shifting from blood lust red back to his normal bright blue as his fangs retracted, leaving surprisingly sharp canine teeth in their wake. He took a deep breath, swallowing before he moved back, his eyes cold and hard as he looked down at the man on the bed.
“You’ve made a mistake, Father.” Benedict’s voice was low and icy as he spoke, matching the ice cold glint in his eyes. “This didn’t have to be done, this wasn’t for the better. “ He leaned down after that, looking at his father with stone cold features. “You didn’t get what you want, I will never be your heir, and I will never take over your company or your name. I am not your son anymore.” He stood after that, stepping away from the weakened vampire in front of him. “I hate you, Liam.”
He left and never looked back.
“Benedict.”
“You know I changed to just Ben long ago.” Ben murmured, looking down at the man standing in front of him. “What’s wrong, Masumi?” He asked, swallowing a bit as he watched his lover. They had just recently found out that he was pregnant, Ben was thrilled but… Masumi didn’t seem to be as much. He had asked his little lover about a mate mark as soon as he had found out… before he had found out but the smaller man still hadn’t given him and answer. He reached out, jumping when Masumi suddenly jerked away from him, not letting him touch his stomach. “Sumi…”
“Don’t do that again.” Masumi murmured, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked up at Ben. “I really don’t care what you want me to call you… I won’t be calling you anything soon.” He and Ben had been together for just under a year; Ben thought that he was in love… that they were meant to be. But, seriously, who wanted to be the mate of a vampire? He had just wanted to have some fun with someone he had thought could be dangerous, hadn’t Ben ever heard of adrenaline rushes? “There is not a baby there for you to rub anymore.”
Ben looked confused, swallowing as his heart clenched a bit. A thousand thoughts filtered through his mind before he settled on one, a soft sound coming from his throat as he frowned. “Ohhh, I’m so sorry baby.” He murmured, reaching forward to hug him, once again shocked when he was pushed away.
“God, what do you think happened, that I lost it?” Masumi asked, shaking his head as he looked up at Ben. “I didn’t have a miscarriage, I had an abortion.” He ignored Ben’s shocked and hurt look, just walking past him. “I didn’t sign up for this Ben; I just wanted a fling, no baby, no mate mark. Forget it. I’m out of here.” He said, shaking his head and waving before walking out the door without another word. He had said all he wanted.
Ben was crushed.
He fell to the bed, tears already filling his eyes as he just looked towards the door, watching it like Masumi would come back in at any moment. He sat there like that, still shocked and on the edge of tears for hours. He couldn’t believe it, his mind just couldn’t seem to wrap around what Masumi had done. An abortion… he had killed their baby… what kind of person could do that? What kind of person could kill and innocent child and act like nothing had happened? He just watched the door for long moments after that, the tears finally spilling from his eyes.
Masumi never came back.
Benedict’s life had started as a human, happy and so alive then his father had ruined that, changing him from a human to vampire without and ounce of hesitance or a token of concern for his own opinion. He had just been a child then… not even twenty one years old and his life was already full of hate and disgust. Then he had met Masumi… he had fallen head over heels in love and he had never thought that he could feel this kind of despair again. Then this… now he had, had his hopes of a family dashed and a happy life destroyed and it all led him to one conclusion, one single thing that he could do to keep from killing himself.
He would become a protector… he would protect the people like himself, the people that had their own opinions, thoughts and lives. He would protect the innocents that couldn’t protect themselves. But more importantly… he would destroy the monsters. He would destroy the monsters that hid under the beds, in the closets and in the shadows. He would protect, he would destroy, and he would live his own life.
Benedict De Bolbec would live his own life, his own way.
