Zodiac’s Prayer

Chapter One

Zodiac’s Prayer

There is a boy out there, he is always hungry and lives in a run-down apartment that is usually empty while his mom works to feed him, his father, away getting drunk. He is also cold and tired because his mom and dad kept him up all night with their hatred yelling. However, being only a child and young, he does not understand all this correctly.

In a corner, he entertains himself with an old teddy bear, "Heewo Teddee! How uhr we tobay?" He squeals, then starts to play by himself, all alone like any other day dancing the bear around.

"I'm home baby." The small boy jumps up to his feet when the door opens many hours later to his mother finally coming home. She looked tired and hungry but you could really tell by the sounds from her stomach, though she was laden with groceries from the little pay she had received from her night and day work schedule.

"Mommy!" The boy squeals and runs to embrace her. The mother smiles lovingly, and hugs him tight, loving the warm bundle. Even though a woman in the street gave her a 5-dollar bill, mistaking her for a beggar and the man that nearly hit her in the street because he didn't care, she managed to smile as she embraced her child. She showered her baby boy in kisses and hugs smiling as she watched his face dance with excitement.

A sudden crash smeared through the small apartment. The door behind them bounces off the back wall wide open, making them both jump and turn. The father has returned from the bars once again. The smell of another woman is swathed around his drunken, burly body. He glared at his wife, before his eyes wandered to the floor his temper sparking.

"What the hell is this?!?" He shouts, gesturing to the bags the mother has; she quietly replies its food to keep them going. The husband asked for the spare money, and then gets angry that she used all the money. He starts to shout about how useless she is, and how expensive the boy is then demands how he would pay the money it takes to be at the bars.

While his parents are yelling and shouting, the frightened boy crawls into the corner of his room and starts to play with his teddy bear. Trying to block out the fighting, he starts to hum quietly and start to make his teddy bear dance, he smiles, but as fast as it came the quicker it fell as the one of the bear's button eyes becomes greatly loose. He gets up with a smile, knowing his mother would fix it as usual.

"Mommy!" He walks over to his parents, who are still shouting, and holds up the damaged toy. "Mommy! Teddy needs to be fixid again!" Nevertheless, his father is yelling too loud so his Mommy can't hear.

The boy is crestfallen, thinking his mommy doesn't like him again. He thought that they had promised to not fight anymore, so he figures promises are to be broken. Determined, he holds up the teddy bear to his parents, "Mommy! Teddy bear needs to be fixid! He's hurt and needs an operwation!" Seeing them not react, he starts to cry. "Mommy! Mommy! Wook' at me! Wook' at me!" He pleads, and becomes silent as he watches his father turn to him with a very angry face. He moves forward and hits the teddy bear so it flies into the wall. The little boy follows it crying.

The mother cries harder and goes to help him, but the father starts yelling again throwing the mother to the couch with a slap of his hand. The father turned his furious gaze to the small boy and growled, storming forward he grabbed the small crying boy by his hair and picked him up causing the mother to dash forward screaming for her son to be let go. Eyes a blazed the father stared at his wife, "I'll kill you all!" Throwing his wife down he pulled out a lighter and dropped it on the paper littered floor, "MOMMYYYYY!" screeching as loud as he could he kicked at his father with all his might until he was dropped into the spreading fire.

Rushing forward once more the poor mother slammed her frozen groceries into her husbands head and dived to push her baby out of the fire. She hit the floor, forcing her baby out but sacrificing herself to the burning licks of orange, yellow and red. She looked up once more and gave her sweetest son one direction, "RUN!" At first he looked confused, wondering if she’d come along with him but as the heat turned the air too hot to breath in the boy backed away. Once more a gagged “RUN!” came from his lovingly but dying mother an with a hiccupped cry he ran out the run down apartment, down the steps and into the dark night of the city, with only his trusty bear with him, as his once home and his past burned away at his back.

He ran until he came upon a broken down cathedral only a few blocks from his once home, but to a child the distance is always much greater. Crawling inside, as it was all boarded up, he sat leaning against the wall, with his one button eye and the other loosened, teddy bear, smashed tight to his heaving chest. Winter winds blew hard making the board creak upon the pressure. Shivering he holds the bear tighter whimpering for his mother to come get him soon whispering into the darkness for help praying to everything he ever heard his parents say to help him.

Yet for the poor boy with no friends or family he knew of, soon wasn't enough the cold seeped down into his malnourished bones and sleep taking over drifting the little one off into mental safety. Animals watched him from all around the abandon building, from the hungry mouse to a starving dog they watched through the night unsure of the glowing that permitted in a small orb bouncing around him.

****************** back at the apartment *****************

Firefighters from all over were busy getting the fire under control and saving the tenants too stupid to leave on their own. The apartment room where the fire had started was destroyed and with the firefighters there the fire slowly getting under control.

“MY SON! He’ll KILL my SON!” the once tan colored mother, now was stricken black and oozing red, screamed for her son in vain. Paramedics tried to save the woman but her ruined body couldn’t support her organs and she died painfully by night fall. Her husband had taken off after their child just before the fire raged out of control and his once wife threw herself out the window to spare the pain inflicting on her body as the fire tried eating her alive.

“11:48p.m pronounced dead” the paramedics closed their eyes in a moment of silence missing the blue hued moon coming out behind the snow filled clouds, and a star shooting in front of it.
