Mr. Right

“Are you ready, Spencer?” Lorie asked me. We were in her parent’s basement, ritual candles lit everywhere and a pentagram that I poorly drew was in the center of the floor.

“Yeah, are you?” I asked back. I was only there for support, Lorie was the one who wanted to do this so I didn’t know why she asked if I was ready. I was never really into this witchcraft shit, but she was and since we were friends I supported her all the way. She nodded and stepped closer to the pentagram.

We were both dressed in black silk robes that she made, the hoods up over our faces, and for some reason we were in our underwear. When I asked Lorie why I had to be in my boxers, she told me that she didn’t want to see me naked (being that most of the spells had to be done while in the nude). I left it at that and undressed down to my boxers. Once we were positioned on both sides of the demonic symbol, we lifted our arms up and I closed my eyes. “You ready?” she asked me again before closing hers.

“Lorie,” I sighed, crossing my arms. “If you don’t want to do this…just tell me. I will be happy to put my clothes back on and go to a movie or something.”

“No, I want to.” she replied, pleading with me to stay. “I am just nervous that’s all. This is my first ritual outside of the club.”

“Mine too.” I replied. We were both in the school’s Dark Art’s club, where we sat around and talked and exchanged spells, potions, and stories about our ceremonies we did inside or outside of the club.

I gave my friend a cheerful smile and she smiled back, nodding to me that she was ready and we went on with the incantation. I didn’t know what to say for the spell, so I just followed behind Lorie and mumbled the words as she spoke, and tried to summon her one true love.

“Bring together my prince and me…” Lorie began to chant. “Let him fall on bended knee…I summon him to my side…that he may take me to be his destined bride”

By the third time that we chanted I understood the words, and spoke at the same tone and volume that Lorie was. I felt kind of weird and thought I was doing the summoning for myself, but it was for Lorie. As we chanted, I felt the wind begin to pick up and the air around us started to get cold. We both smiled, knowing that it was working and started to chant louder and faster. The wind began to thrash around, causing us to lose our balance and fall backwards and a few of the candles blew out. Lorie was the first to fall down, breaking the circle and everything at once stopped. I was the next to fall, and I fell right into one of the shrines that Lorie set up and knocked all the candles off and onto my robe.

“Shit.” I cried out as my robe caught on fire and I quickly put it out. “Lorie, are you okay?” I called, getting up. I didn’t hear a reply from Lorie so I walked over and found she was knocked out. “Lorie, are you okay?” I asked again, kneeling down next to her and seeing if she had any head trauma.

“Yes.” she groaned as she opened her eyes. “I’m fine. You?”

“A little burnt, but I will be alright. What happened?” I asked, looking over towards the spot that we were standing at before we were blown off our feet.

“I think the spell was a bit too powerful to control.” Lorie replied as I helped her up.

“I think so too. But hopefully it worked.”

“We won’t know till tomorrow.” Lorie said, looking at the pentagram on the floor. “Thank you.” she smiled up at me. “You are a true friend for helping me with that spell.”

“Yeah, I know. And if this summoning spell works,” I told her changing back into my clothes, “You won’t have to hang around me so often. You will be too busy fucking your new prince charming.” I laughed.

“Oh, you.” she hit be on the arm, and she also changed back into her clothes. “Spencer, the only reason why I hang around you is because you are a nerd and no one wants to hang out with you.”

“I am not a nerd.” I protested.

“Dude, you are a wiz in calculus, you are in science club, and you are the president of our class…and-”

“I get your point.” I interrupted her. “So okay, I am kind of a nerd. But I am a hot nerd.” we both laughed and cleaned up our stuff so that her parents wouldn’t find out what we were doing.

“Right, you’re hot." Lorie agreed sarcastically; we both knew that I wasn’t hot. My thick rim black glasses were held together with silver duct tape, and my face looked more like the face of the moon then of a super model. My clothes were hand me downs from my older brother and they were too big for me. I held my pants up with a plastic belt. I didn’t even know why Lorie was my friend.

“See you tomorrow at school.” I called as I grabbed my coat and headed for the door.

“See ya.” Lorie called from her room and I headed out and towards my house.

The next few days, Lorie was on edge. She thought every guy who walked passed her was the guy who we had summoned on Sunday night. She even mistook about five guys for being HIM, causing us both to look stupid. Each day that passed, she started to lose hope and wondered if the spell had failed. By the end of the week, not one guy came up to her and announced that he was her prince. By the second week, she was in tears and asked me to meet her after my track practice.

“I don’t know what happened.” Loire said frantically. “I should have a hot guy on my arm, giving me kisses and hugs and losing my virginity to him. I mean…we did everything right.”

“Maybe we said it wrong?” I said, taking out her spell book and looking at the spell we used.

“You think?” she asked, taking a seat next to me and taking the book from my hands. “No, we did it right. OH!” she gasped and she turned to me. “It must have been when that gust of wind knocked us over.”

“Maybe. That wind was pretty strong. We must have not finished the spell.”

“And that spell was a one time use sort of thing.” Lorie sighed.

“We could use another spell.” I told her.

“Which one? There are hundreds of love spells.”

“I was reading last night a new one you put in there, the ‘Mr. Right’ one.”

“That one?”

“Yeah. That way you can pick the traits that you want in your man, and just not settle on some summoning spell that gives you things you don’t want.”

“True. But I don’t know what I want in a guy. Why don’t you pick out the traits for me.” she said after a minute of thought.

“Me?”

“Yeah, you can give the guy the traits you think I would love and I can get the ingredients for the potion the spell needs.”

“Okay, but if you don’t like the personality, or features I give the guy…just let me know and I can change them.”

“Agreed.” Lorie said, closing the book. “So shall we meet at my house on Saturday; you can sleep over.”

“I can come over, but I don’t think my mom will let me sleep over. You know how she is with you, she thinks you worship the devil.”

“Oh yeah.” Lorie sighed. “Your mom is the strict religious mom type. I still don’t know why she lets you hang out with me.”

“Because you are my only friend.” I replied.

“Well… at least she let’s you hang out with other kids your age, and not those church members she made you hang out with when you were young.”

“Right.” I agreed, and we went our own separate ways till the next day.

I sighed as I stared down at the blank piece of paper that I had sitting in front of me for the last hour. I needed to write down all of the traits that Lorie wanted in her guy, but I didn’t know where to start. She was a quiet person most of the time and would keep to herself when she wasn’t with me. I had to guess at everything.

“Honey, you still up?” my mom asked, knocking and coming into my room.

“Yeah. Sorry, I will go to bed soon.” I sighed, looking back at her. “I am just finishing up some homework.”

“Okay, don’t stay up too late.” she said, kissing me on the forehead and saying good night.

I sighed again once she left and thought harder about what Lorie wanted. Finally, I gave up around one and just put down random things that Lorie might like. It was a simple list, and since there was no limit to how many traits, I just put down as many as I could possible fit on just the one side. I was mostly satisfied with everything I put down, and hopefully Lorie would be too. I just wanted to see my best friend since pre-school be happy with someone she will love, and for them to love her back.

“So…what have you come up for my Mr. Right.” Lorie asked. She was dressed again in her black open robe, and lavender lace matching underwear and bra.

I gave her a moment so I could also change into my robes, leaving my boxers on. “I didn’t know what you would like, so I just wrote down a few traits of what a girl might like.” I told her as I took out the piece of paper that had everything I wrote down. I began to read off everything I put down as Lorie cut up and placed everything into the plastic caldron she bought last Halloween. “Handsome,” I started. “Gold eyes…short, jet black hair…perfect white teeth…” I continued. “A bit rugged,…loves the outdoors… An athletic, tone body...good scene of humor…smart….artistic…and a big cock.” I smiled, dropping the paper into the caldron.

“Spencer!” Lorie gasped, grabbing the paper out of the container. “Why would you put something like that on there?” she asked, looking over the list.

“Because I know that girls like them big.”

“You have been watching too much internet porn again, haven’t you?”

“No I haven’t. I have been listening into the cheerleaders conversations again.” I replied.

“Well…we do want them big.” she confessed. “But not too big, or too small.”

“Fine, write down the measurement you want.” I told her and looked the other way so she could write down the size of the dick she wanted to suck on when she got her ideal guy.

Once she finished, she grabbed the lighter that was sitting beside her and lit it under the paper. As the paper caught on fire, I looked down at the other paper Lorie gave to me and started to read the spell out loud. I felt uncomfortable again as I read the spell, but I needed to read it because the spell wasn’t for me.

“A perfect man we summon now,” I began to say. “Another way we don't know how…
to make our sister see the light…somewhere out there is Mr. Right.”

As I finished the spell, Lorie dropped the burnt paper into the potion. We both jumped back as a puff of smoke emerged as the paper hit the bottom and made a small hissing noise. I coughed a bit as the smoke got into my lungs, and I waved a white cloud out of my face before any more got into my lungs. Lorie did the same and got up, redressing into her normal clothes and I did the same.

“Do you think this spell will work?” Lorie asked, walking me to the door.

“Let’s hope so.” I replied. “I don’t really want to dress down again and do another spell.”

“Me too. Let’s just hope it does.”

“Yeah.” I sighed. “Well…goodnight, and I will see you Monday.” I smiled and gave her a hug good-bye.

On Monday morning, Lorie and I met up at our usual place but Lorie didn’t look so good. “What’s wrong?” I asked her as she approached me with a sad look on her face.

“The spell didn’t work again.” she said, her face smug from tears.

“What do you mean? It should have.” I told her as I tried to comfort her the best I could.

“I talked to Sarah last night.” she told me. Sarah was the President of the Dark Arts club, and was like a skilled witch and proud to be in the Wicca community. “ I told her what happened, with the two attempts of the love spells. I thought she was going to be helpful, and tell us what we did wrong. But she gave me the opposite. She told me that not all spells work for people.”

“So you just assumed that the spell didn’t work for you after one day?” I asked, shocked to see how she gave up so easily. “You have all week, you just have to wait a little while longer. Give it till Friday.”

“Okay.” she shook her head, wiping her fresh tears away.

Sadly though, she didn’t give it a week and told me she was going to quit magic altogether. I tried to convince Lorie to not quit, since that was her passion but she didn’t listen. For the rest of the week, I tried to get her to go the meetings, but she would be stubborn and would kick me as I tried to drag her to the meetings. I even asked Sarah for a potion or something to try to make her go. But that even didn’t work. I gave up after a while and just let Lorie do her own thing. But I didn’t want her to be lonely. I had to do something about her boyfriend problems. I thought of a good idea and asked Sarah again for her help, only this time I asked her for some ingredients. When she asked me what they were for, I told her that I was going to do the “Mr. Right” potion again for Lorie. She smiled and gave me the things I needed for the potion.

“What do you have there?” my mom asked when I arrived back home.

“Just some chemicals I am working with for my science class. Don’t worry they are all stable.” I told her.

“Okay,” she said a bit worried. “Just don’t blow up the house.” she told me, and went down into the basement to pray. She had a small altar for her Holy Father is Son, and she would pray for hours. She would pray for everything that was going on in the world. Since my dad died, she was the big religious person in the family. I just gave my spiritual essence to her.

I locked myself in my room for the rest of the night, and dumped all the contents from my bag onto my bed. I shifted through the items and separated the potion ingredients from my school things. Pulling out Lorie’s handmade spell book that I fished out of her trashcan, I pulled it open to the potion I needed and placed the right amounts into a large mixing bowl from our kitchen. After a good stir, I wrote down the traits again on a post-it and stripped off my clothes. Taking a sharpie from my desk, I drew three pentagrams on my body to boost up the magic around me. One was on one side of my arm, the other on the other side of my arm, and one big one on my chest and stomach. I threw down the pen afterwards, not caring that the ink would last for three or four days on my chest and stood in the center of my room. Holding the post-it in my hand and a lighter in my other hand, I began to read the spell out loud that came with the potion.

“A perfect man we summon now…another way we don't know how…to make our sister see the light…somewhere out there is Mr. Right.” I said it louder this time, enunciating the words more than the last time and burning the paper as I did. Just before the flame reached my fingertips, I threw the post-it into the fire and waited for the small puff of smoke.

There was a slight delay to the potion’s reaction and it happened, it wasn’t just a small puff of white smoke like at Lorie’s house. Instead, a large bang went off, like fireworks and a large black cloud come out of the bowl. I groaned as I sat up and looked at the smoke that was rising to the ceiling. I only caught the last part before the smoke vanished into the air, but in that one moment I saw a demonic face in the cloud of smoke. That alone scared the shit out of me and I quickly poured the potion down the sink. After I poured out the potion, I took a hot shower and scrubbed hard to try to get the sharpie off my skin. I was able to get most of it off, but not all of it. Luckily my mom won’t notice the symbols on my arms. When my fingers were numb and I couldn’t scrub anymore, I stopped and put on my pajamas. Slipping into my bed, I stared up at the ceiling and I could of sworn I could still see that demonic face. Even when my eyes were shut I could see it, which scared me the most. I did fall to sleep though around three, the time when God died, and the face went away.
