Of Fire and Darkness

It’d been yet another long and hard day at work. We were a small group of mercenaries and our leader was Corum Sparkmaster, a well known Vampire that could control electricity. I, myself, am Caspian Evermore. I’m half poison elemental and half shadow elemental, well as far as I was concerned that’s what I saw myself as. I actually had no idea looking back now.
Amongst the other members were Kaiga; a Demon. Raika; a demi-god that looked like he should have been part giant…and a newcomer. Eternal was his name. Being half Shapeshifter and half Fire elemental he was a deadly mixture of fiery power and extreme speed. However we didn’t know any of this yet, him joining was a complete accident.

The original four of us had been walking through the woods noisily, we were laughing and joking after a tiring day being paid to kill off more enemies of the Fairwings, as snobby as that race is they don’t half pay well.

“We should stop soon.”

Corum butted in between Kaiga and Raika sharing another rude joke. They both instantly stopped talking and looked at him as he spoke.

“Don’t know about you but my muscles are beginning to ache after being pushed that hard today. So we should stop soon, under the shelter of these trees is best for us anyway.”
Raika nodded at him.
“Agreed.”

It was then that something caught my eye, something abnormally brightly coloured compared to the current snow covered ground and half dead trees.
“You settle down ahead...I’ll catch up..”
“What’s up Caspian?”
Kaiga looked around, trying to see where I was looking.
“just…seen something…you go on..”

Corum nodded at me.
“We won’t be too far ahead. There’s more shelter over there…and more branches to hang our tents from.”
He pointed ahead to the right and I smiled, memorising the location.
“I’ll be there in a bit.”

Splitting from the group I headed further to the right, I could hear a stream as I quietly moved from tree root to tree root. Squinting I saw it again, still on the floor. Brown with a tiny bit of red. There was no way I could figure out what it was until I got closer. Making sure I kept my footsteps near silent I peered around a tree, it looked like there was a body under a blanket….a small amount of crimson red hair visible from an edge. I frowned, I’d known someone with that coloured hair years ago and only come across it a rare number of times since.
Crouching next to the blanket I lifted the edge warily with one hand on the handle of my sword just in case. Sure enough there was an unconscious man under there, not the one I’d known but I was pretty sure he had a slight resemblance.

“You shouldn’t be out here…you’ll get so ill..”

Resting my hand on his cheek lightly I checked his temperature. He was cold. Not good for a fire elemental. Putting my arms underneath his back and legs I picked him up with the blanket still over him and carried him in the direction the rest of the group had gone. Their voices got louder as I neared, two tents were already up and a fire had been started.

“Hey...can one of you do me a favor and put my tent up too?”
I asked as I joined them and put the stranger on the floor momentarily so I could drop my bag off of my back.

“What’ve you got there Evermore..?”
Kaiga paced over and lifted the edge of the blanket.
“Rescuing strangers as well now are you? Careful or you’ll become the stuff of legends.”
He laughed and nudged my side.

“Shut up, you..”
I smiled, knowing he was teasing me for being soft.
“Couldn’t just leave him there…hes a fire elemental and its snowing. He’d be dead by morning.”
Raika lifted my bag and unpacked my tent.
“I’ll get this up for you mate. No problem.”

He shook it out and searched for the right branches as I knelt down. Picking the stranger up again I moved towards the fire, kicked some snow out of the way and sat on the floor holding as much of him as I could on my lap. I quickly checked him for any wounds only to find a few bruises and scratches; so I wrapped my arms around him and held him against me in an effort to warm him up. It wasn’t long before Corum sat next to me on the edge of my cloak, he shifted some of the man’s hair out of his face and looked at him.

“Gods Evermore…he’s barely even a man.”
I looked at him and it was only then I noticed how young he was, must have been in his late teens.
“Good job you picked him up eh?”
Corum patted my shoulder.
“We’ll look after him till he’s back on his feet.”
“…Thanks Corum..”

It was no small feat for him to allow me to look after this…..boy…man...I didn’t know which to refer to. Our group is strict, we are the best at what we do, highly trained and risking our lives every day. To allow me to bring someone unknown into the group without Corum’s inspection first was...well...unheard of. However I gathered that Corum meant to drop him off somewhere or send him on his way once he had gotten well enough to do so.
