Prologue

Prologue:

He couldn’t believe it. It was really, truly happening. But still he could not believe it. The Gods were dieing. The so called Egyptian Gods, the ones that controlled and protected one half of the world and the so called Greek Gods, the other guardians and rulers of the other half of the world, were falling into the deadliest sleep to ever happen to them. And all because of one so called Prophet that had turned the people on them.

Sighing and shoving his hair out of his face, Geb stood up and narrowed Kohl lined eyes before leaving his decimated temple, his dark hair swinging behind him. Disappearing from the steps, he headed towards where he knew Thoth was packing away his collection of scrolls, papyruses and other things that held the world’s knowledge.

Pulling the slender man away, he looked down at equally dark eyes and nodded. “We need to go talk to them about the future of the Gods and the world.”

“Aren’t we all to be reborn?” the smaller of the two asked softly, getting a nod. “Then why speak with them when we need to prepare.”

“Because I fear I won’t be here much longer,” Geb said quietly. Getting a sad nod from the other man, they disappeared along with all of the items in the temple, leaving it barren. Desolate.

Appearing in what used to be a lavishly decorated temple, Geb and Thoth looked around.

“Zeus, I think it’s time we put our plans into motion,” the God of Knowledge and Wisdom called out softly, his head tilting back, his black hair spilling down his back.

Deep green eyes looked up at Thoth and blinked. The Greek god of the sky stood up, his elder sibling following his lead as they stood. “I agree. Myself and Hades are the only Olympians left, soon we will all be killed.”

Matching green eyes stared over Zeus’ shoulder and the rather pale man spoke smoothly. “We must hurry or all will be in vain.” With that he stepped forward to lay hands on Geb’s shoulders and bow his head slightly in a way of welcome.

Bowing his head back, Geb looked to Zeus and waved a small hand. “My friend and I…our temples are being ransacked. I fear for the future. Every thing has been tucked away into a very special tomb. The so called ‘Tomb under the Sphinx’. No mortal will get into it until it is time for us to do so,” the God of the Earth stated, his voice low and sad.

“We placed everything you gave to us, including the weapons that Hephaestus made. I am sorry he was harmed when he feel into his sleep,” Thoth said to Zeus quietly, before turning to Hades and blinking a few times. “You will be the last to sleep, am I right?” he asked the god of death quietly, reaching up to undo the large necklace from his neck, letting it drop and expose a small crystal on a piece of leather.

“This crystal holds the souls of the Egyptian gods, as it was. We were able to collect them in their entirety,” Geb told the two gods as he removed the necklace for the smaller male. “We entrust them to you.”

Zeus nodded to Geb seriously. “We all are. He was a good man and a strong man. But we will see him again, I am sure of it, in another life, and another land.”

The palest of the gods standing within the deserted ruins nodded and took the crystal from Geb. “Of course, my soul will protect them and give them to our new selves. We will never be separated again.” The lord of the dead stepped away from Geb to approach Thoth. He leaned forward to place his forehead to the god of wisdom’s. “I will see you in another life.”

“Yes, someday soon,” Thoth said sadly, his eyes brimming with unshed tears. “Take care of yourself and make sure our souls will always remember our days and nights together,” he continued as Geb looked away, remembering his own love. One that hadn’t been felt by the other, had never been exposed to the other. Shaking his head, he stood straight and moved to the chamber that would hold their bodies before turning them to ash once they moved on.

Thoth smiled softly and laid a gentle kiss on Hades lips. “Hold me until I sleep? I don’t think I will make it to see the sun set once more. I wish to feel you around me one last time, my lover,” he requested, laying his head onto the dark Gods chest, listening to the slow heart beat, his eyes growing heavy.

Hades nodded and entered the sleeping chamber, a gentle hand lying on the back of Thoth’s neck. He sank onto one of the chairs that also served as a bed, pulling the Egyptian close to his body so they could both fit. “Sleep…when you pass I will link our souls and pass as well. We shall watch the sun rise together once again.” Hades promised as he pressed his nose into his love’s hair to keep his tears from showing or falling.

Zeus entered the room and lay down on one of the chairs as well, taking a deep breath and closing his moss colored eyes. He welcomed the lethargic calm that surrounded him after the last three days of controlling a fourth of the world.

Curling up into a chair to, Geb smiled softly as he looked upon the sleeping face of the one his soul longed for and let his eyes shut as Thoth sighed and nuzzled close to his lover, falling asleep. “We’ll see each other soon. I know it. The earth cries for us and the humans,” Geb said softly, his voice far away, sleepy as he reached out and gently played with a bit of his loves hair.

“Hades…thank you for everything you have tried to do. Zeus, may you see your love once more. This time, don’t be a cheater,” he teased softly before he to succumbed to the sleep, his body glowing, his fingers still tangled in apricot hair, a soft smile on his lips. The sighs of many other bodies filled the air as the last four Gods finally feel to the disbelief and hatred of the human species.

The god of the sky chuckled and nodded. “I will attempt not to be.” He said as he allowed his soul a rest. Hades stayed awake just long enough to seal all the souls together and then fell asleep, his lips pressed to his dead lover’s fore head.
