Chapter 1

Noemi sighed while sitting at her desk. She was working on a report for world history class when she glanced out of her bedroom window. Coming down her street was a small moving van. It parked out in front of the house next door. It was an older Victorian styled home that had a for sale sign in the front yard. It had been for sale for a couple of months now. She guessed that whoever was in the van bought the house.

She got up from her desk and peeked out the window more clearly. She was a bit excited to have some new neighbors. She hoped whoever it was had children. There were not many children in her part of the neighborhood. This community mostly had older couples. They came here for the peace and quiet away from the big city, and the safety it provided. It was a large gated community and a large percentage of the homes were mostly built in the last thirty years or so, except for the large Victorian home that was only thirty feet from her house. She had heard it was of some historic value and that it couldn’t be torn down, so they just built around it.

Two young men emerged from the van and her eyes widened. They were handsome, but also more than that, they were beautiful. She did not know that men could be so beautiful. One looked to be about her age. Surely, it couldn’t be that only two guys bought the house. The house was larger than hers and would be a lot of space for only two people. Maybe the rest of the family was coming later. She heard a soft knock on her door breaking her away from her thoughts.

“Honey, dinner is almost ready.” Noemi turned toward her mother. “I see you are checking out our new neighbors already.” She gave a slight smile and Noemi just nodded. Her mother padded on into her room. “I heard that only two young men bought the old Lancaster house.” Her mother started in. She loved gossip and neighborly gossip was her mom’s favorite kind.

“Only two people?” Noemi questioned. “That house is kind of big for only two people.”

Her mother gave a slight nod. “Yeah, I heard that those two are brothers and apparently they are quite well off.” Noemi gave another quick glance outside her window. Well off. That was a term her mother used for the word ‘rich’. “They’re also not from the United States, but some county in eastern Europe.” Her mother brought her hand up and began to lightly tap her finger against her cheek in thought. “I’m not sure which one though. I don’t remember the name of it.”

“Humph”, Noemi replied. “I wonder what brought them here?” Her mother shrugged. “I don’t know but they are quite easy on the eyes.” She smiled and Noemi inwardly groaned. Her mother liked handsome men. Just like her father, who did some modeling in his youth. Her mother still flirted with men even though she was married, but Noemi knew it was just harmless fun. Her mother and father were deeply in love.

“Well, dinner should be done. Are you coming down?” Her mother turned to leave.

“Yeah, I’ll be down in a minute.” Noemi replied. Her mom left and Noemi gave one last glance out of her window. A figure stood below staring up at her and gave her a large smile as soon as she looked back at him. Her heart froze in her chest. He was breathtaking.

Neculai came out from the house when he noticed his brother staring up into the window next door. “Are you just going to stand there all day or are you going to start to take your stuff inside?” He said, looking at his younger brother in slight irritation.

His brother turned and flashed him a sweet smile. He had always been so carefree and sweet. Even still at this age. “I just wanted to take a peek at her.” He walked toward Neculai with a bounce in his step.

“I know, I know.” Neculai said. “But we really need to begin to get our stuff inside. It will be getting dark in a couple of hours.”

“But that’s fine for us.” His brother replied. “We don’t have a problem seeing in the dark.”

Neculai groaned. “I know that, but we are not in Romania anymore. We need to be more discreet here. Have you already forgotten everything I taught you right before our move here, Noah?”

Noah pouted. “No but…”

“No buts. We need to get everything inside. It is going to be a busy day tomorrow.” Neculai started taking a box inside the house when he stopped. “We will see her tomorrow, but for now have patience.” He sighed and walked on into the house. The young ones had no patience anymore.

“Noemi! Noemi!” Noemi heard the voice of her best friend breaking through all the talking and shuffling that was going on in the school’s hall. She turned only to be staring right into Tracy’s excited face.

“Guess what?” She blurted out happily. Noemi smiled back and then started to get her books out of her locker. Her friend Tracy could be so excitable. But that was what Noemi loved about her. “What is it?” Noemi replied. Tracy started speaking a mile a minute. “We are going to have a new substitute teacher in world history class. Mrs. Morris went into labor the other day and will be out on maternity leave.” Tracy leaned her back against the locker beside Noemi and looked out dreamily. “I wonder if it will be a handsome man?” Noemi groaned. Tracy could also be a hopeless romantic.

“In this school?” Noemi scoffed. “Not likely.”

This was a small private school which seemed to only have and hire, older distinguished looking teachers. Most held doctorate degrees. Mrs. Morris had been the one exception that Noemi knew of, but she was still in her mid-thirties and was just now having her first child.

Tracy let out a long sigh. “Well, a girl can dream.”

Noemi looked at her friend and gave a small smile. “We better hurry or we’ll be late for homeroom.” They started off down the hall together. Yeah, a girl could dream she thought and smiled, then licked her lips. Her mouth was getting dry again already. Lately, she found herself getting thirstier all the time. Thank goodness she brought extra money for more drinks at lunch.

“Noemi, that is like the third bottle of water you’ve drank since lunch period started.” Tracy complained.

Noemi finished the water off before answering. “I know, but I can’t help it. I am just so thirsty.”

“Are you sure nothing’s wrong.”

“Yes, I’m fine.” Noemi replied, trying to reassure her friend. But she wasn’t sure, really. The last couple of weeks she noticed her mouth becoming more dry and parched. Even with drinking so much water, it still only lessened the dryness a tiny bit. Sometimes her throat felt like sandpaper, and it was becoming more frequent. She sighed and closed her eyes, making all kinds of excuses in her head about what it could be.

“Oh my god.”

Noemi opened her eyes to see Tracy’s eyes transfixed on something in the corner of the cafeteria. She exhaled a large breath. She couldn’t believe it. It was the guy next door and he was even more handsome up close. He stood in line waiting to get his lunch when she noticed he turned his head faintly towards her and smiled kindly. She gulped as her heart began to beat faster. He was like an angel. He had soft pale, blonde curls that reminded her of an old renaissance painting featuring cupids she had once seen. His eyes were like glowing amber and he was quite tall and lean. Not overly muscular at all, but more sinewy and graceful. His smile did her in. A guy shouldn’t have such a sweet, innocent smile such as his.

Noemi was lost in dreamland when she felt someone gently shake her. “Noemi.” Tracy said trying to get her attention. Tracy grinned. “It looks like someone has a crush on the new transfer student.”

“Transfer student?”

“Yeah,” Tracy replied and got all excited again. “I heard he’s a transfer student from Romania.” Tracy pouted. “Too bad he’s in the senior class. We won’t be having any classes with him.”

Romania, Noemi thought. That must be the country her new neighbors were from that mom couldn’t remember. “So that’s where they’re from.” She said softly to herself.

“What?” Tracy said. “Do you know him?”

“Remember I told you the other night on the phone that I had some new neighbors. Well, he’s one of them.”

Tracy’s eyes almost bugged out of her head. “You mean to tell me that that tall angel is living next to you! Oh, if only I could be so lucky.” Tracy’s eyes got all dreamy.

“It’s no big deal really.” Noemi said, and opened a fresh bottle of water up and took a long swallow. Tracy’s eyes narrowed. “Yeah, right. I noticed how you were looking at him.” Her eyes brightened. “But even though we both clearly like him, I am proud of you. It’s about time you like someone. I mean, I don’t ever really remember you having any crushes or anything…”

Noemi quickly tuned out her best friend’s gabbing and looked toward where the new transfer student was. He was sitting at a round table surrounded by a few girls. Well, it looked like he was going to be a popular one. She might as well just give up now. She wasn’t exactly the ugliest girl in the school but she sure wasn’t the prettiest either. Her wavy, sandy blonde hair was pulled back into a low ponytail. She was a bit on the short side and had just an average figure. She really didn’t stand out, so how was she going to compete with all the pretty girls that were already looking to hook up with him. She sighed and was actually glad when she heard the lunch bell chime.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Noemi sat down nervously at her desk in world history class. The bell chimed and she waited patiently for the new substitute teacher to arrive. She hoped the sub wasn’t some kind of arrogant jerk like many of the subs they tended to get. She wondered if she still had to turn in her paper to this new sub. She watched her hands as she wringed them together, then she heard gasps coming from around her.

She glanced up. Her mouth dropped open. There in the front of her class stood the other one of her two new neighbors. She hadn’t seen him clearly out her window the other day for him taking boxes and stuff into the house, but she knew it was him. This wasn’t fair. They both were hot. Both her neighbors were hot. Apparently, the other girls in class thought so too, because Noemi could hear their hushed whispers as he strode up to the blackboard and began to write.

“Hello.” He said with a slight European accent. “My name is Mr. Neculai Dragomir and I will be you new teacher until Mrs. Morris arrives back from her maternity leave.”

Noemi couldn’t believe it. Even his voice was hot. It sounded deep, in a sing song way, and his accent could melt a girl’s heart. And it was making hers melt at this very moment. Her mother told her they were brothers, but they looked like almost complete opposites. Mr. Dragomir was taller and had long, silky black hair that was pulled back into a low ponytail and bright green eyes. But like his brother, he too had a lean, sinewy body frame. He was not the ordinary teacher the school usually hired.

He picked up the roll book on the desk. “Now I will call out your names to see who is present and also just to get to know you.” He smiled coolly and the females of the class sighed.

Noemi couldn’t take her eyes off of him while he called out the names. When he got to hers, her heart sped up.

“Miss Noemi Jameson.”

“Here.” She shakily replied.

He gazed at her and grinned. His eyes seemed to focus on no one but her. Her hands slightly trembled when she noticed the look in his eyes, the look of yearning.
