Katherines POV
I sipped a cup of coffee as I watched the snow fall outside my cabin, the snow came early this year, it was only October. The coffee should have warmed me but I still felt cold, down to my very bones. I set my cup down on the small wooden table and got up to get a wool blanket, but this wasn’t a cold blankets would help. I felt distant, not really there as I returned to my chair with my blanket around my shoulders. I hugged it tight and try as I might I couldn’t hold back the tears that burned my eyes. I whipped angrily at the tears and cursed myself for being so weak and emotional.
I gazed around the cabin, everything reminded me of them. My grandparents had recently passed away leaving me their cabin on the edge of the forest. I had so many memories in this place; I used to come every summer to visit them. I missed them, first grandma passed with cancer and a year later grandpa died in a hunting accident. The doctor said a bear got him but I didn’t believe that, no a bear didn’t kill him, something else did.
I watched the snow until the sun fell behind the mountains; I stood to shut the curtains when suddenly it felt like I was being watched. I peered into the darkness but couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary. I pulled the curtains shut and walked to the thermostat to turn up the heat. I had to get up early to pick up some things from town. I walked into my bedroom and pulled the covers back; I climbed into bed and fell into a restless sleep.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I was running, running as fast as I could but what ever was chasing me was catching up. I was in the forest behind my grandparent’s cabin, and it was snowing still. I found a hollow log to hide in hoping whatever was chasing me wouldn’t find me. My heart was beating so hard it felt like it would burst.
I heard the snow crunch near the log; I heard something sniffing the air. I held my breath and prayed it would give up and leave me alone. A howl echoed through the forest, making the hair on the back of my neck stand up and my blood run cold. I could hear whatever animal it was just a few feet away from the log, then I heard it run off. I peered out of my hiding spot, just to find a pair of blue-grey eyes staring at me; it growled and snapped it huge jaws at me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I woke up screaming, I looked around as if to see the animal from my dream but saw nothing but the empty cabin. I was sitting bolt upright in my bed telling myself it was only a dream. I pushed the bedding away and stood heading for the bathroom. After my shower I wrapped a large towel around myself and proceeded to make some breakfast. I drank my coffee and poked at my eggs and toast that were barely touched. I was thinking about my dream trying to think of what animal had been chasing me. It looked like a wolf but it was too big to be I thought to myself.
I left the uneaten food on the table and got dressed. I pulled my waist length red hair into a ponytail and threw on my coat. I walked outside to my truck and noticed animal tracks in the fresh snow. There were bird tracks, maybe a deer, and what looked like wolf prints just a few feet from my front door. Though not uncommon it was slightly unnerving to think I had a wolf living so close to me. I pushed the thought away and went to my truck. I climbed in, started the heater, and drove towards town.
