Chapter One – Strange Night
“I hope you don’t find this forward, but could I buy you a drink?”
Looking up from her almost empty strawberry margarita, the first thing Kristy saw were a pair of bright green eyes staring straight back; eyes with a hint of mystery and challenge, almost dangerous.
To avoid looking like a slack-jawed idiot, Kristy used her knack for a quick tongue and responded easily.
“I’ve got one right in front of me actually.” She’d walked down the street from her apartment for a few drinks at Ricky’s Bar, hoping to calm her nerves.
Her letter from Columbia University was supposed to arrive tomorrow, and she couldn’t sleep with the anticipation building. Her apartment was already packed, and if she didn’t get in she didn’t know what she’d do. There was no way she could stay in Bridge Port much longer.
Bridge Port, a small little town about 50 miles from any other major city, had been her home her whole life, and although she’d miss it and everyone terribly, she needed to get out. For 21 years she’d done nothing but watch the grass grow here, always desperately wishing to be mixed in the city life, getting a career started other then farming, and being around people who hadn’t known her her whole life and everything about her.
But for reasons like this, she rarely ventured to the bar. Not only because it was the ‘main place to be’ for everyone, but she was never in the mood for drunk old men stumbling over to her, rambling away about how they went to high school with her mom.
This guy however, couldn’t be much more than five or so years older than her. For some reason, she instantly didn’t trust him. Maybe it was the alcohol talking, or maybe the feeling she got when she looked into his eyes, but whatever it was, she didn’t like it.
He chuckled slightly at her response and sat down anyway.
“That’s why I offered to buy you one; I noticed you were running a little low.”
She looked down at her drink and slowly stirred what was left of it with her straw. Contemplating, she avoided his question, responding to his first statement instead.
“Well it was slightly forward, considering I don’t even know you’re name.” She winced slightly at the slightly bitchy tone she hadn’t attempted for. She looked back up at him, purposefully not into his eyes.
He was defiantly an attractive guy, and at any other time she might have been interested, but the stress she was under right now was way too much to handle. His black hair fell slightly into his eyes and looked like he’d recently run his hands threw it. Small dimples were placed on either side of his broad smile, full of white, almost perfect teeth.
“Robert.” He held out his hand patiently, his smile growing slightly. Not realizing she’d opened the door to an official introduction until now, she had no choice but to hold out her hand as well.
“Nice to meet you Robert, I’m -”
“Kristy, right?” Surprised, Kristy pulled her hand back. That danger she’d seen in his eyes earlier flared up again and she immediately broke eye contact.
“Yeah…” She turned back to her drink, wondering how this guy knew her; she didn’t recognize him, and she knew almost everyone in town. Granted, a few people from neighboring towns came in to Bridge Port, especially to the Ricky’s Bar, which was known for it’s under priced beer, but then how did he know her name?
“I was in your American Studies class last year… With Mrs. Crawfield?” He offered after seeing her shift uncomfortably.
“Oh… I… Sorry, I didn’t recognize you…” She stumbled awkwardly.
He laughed lightly. “You don’t remember me at all, do you?”
She chuckled too, slightly embarrassed. “Sorry… No.”
“It’s cool, I didn’t think you would anyway, you were always in the front with your nose in your laptop, I don’t think I ever once saw you glance back.”
For some reason, she felt a little more at ease now that she knew he had been in one of her classes at the community college. He seemed to be making an honest attempt to make her feel comfortable, and she appreciated it. Maybe having someone to talk to tonight wouldn’t be so bad; it would defiantly take her mind off that letter.
“Now; how about that drink? I don’t know about you but I don’t enjoy drinking on my own.” He said, locking eyes with her. This time they seemed filled with laughter and enjoyment instead of mystery and danger. Inwardly shaking her head, Kristy thought to her herself, ‘how much can eyes tell you about a person anyway.’
“I’d love another margarita, easy on the ice.” She smiled back at him as he placed the order with a passing by waitress.
Several drinks later, Kristy found herself rambling on and on.
“I need, NEED to get into Columbia! Seriously, I might die if I don’t.”
“I don’t think you’ll die,” Robert said, laughing slightly before he finished his first beer and ordered a second.
“Okay, maybe nothing THAT extreme, but my apartment is already packed, I’m all set to go; tomorrow actually. I mean, as long as I get in… What if I don’t get in? It took me two weeks to pack all my stuff!”
Reaching across the table like an old friend, he gripped her hand lightly. “Don’t worry, I’m sure you will. You always messed up the curve in our American Studies class, how could you not get in?”
Laughing, she nodded her head. “I guess you’re right… I shouldn’t be so stressed out, but I am…”
“Well I know you’ll get in. That means that tonight is you’re last night in Bridge Port though. Why aren’t you partying?”
“Ha! I thought this was a party!” She responded, reaching across the table and touching his hand like he had just a few moments before. Noticing a spark behind his eyes, she quickly moved her hand away. It wasn’t a good spark; for some reason his eyes still scared her slightly.
But it passed quickly and he smiled back, “Hell yeah it is; how about another one?”
“Oh my God, I couldn’t. I’ve still gotta walk home, I need to be able to stand at least!”
He chuckled at that, his eyes once again filled with fun and laughter.
“Well I’ll tell you what; let me buy you one more, and after that I’ll drive you home?”
Immediately sitting up straight, Kristy tried to focus her eyes on him, but it still came out fuzzy.
“Um, that’s okay, I’d rather walk. It’s just up the street, and I could use the fresh air. Thank you for the offer though.”
“Well I’ll walk with you then. It’s too late for you to be out there by yourself.”
Glancing at her watch she noticed it was almost 1:00am. She’d been planning to leave by 10:00pm so she could make it home before dark. Not that Bridge Port wasn’t a nice town, but you never know.
Weighing her options she thought it’d be safer if she let him walk her home, and after agreeing so, Robert left a $50 on the table and held out his hand to help her up.
Standing up caused more of a head rush then she would have liked, and if he hadn’t have been there she probably would have fell.
Once outside, Robert put his arm around her waist and threw her arm over his shoulder. About to protest that that wasn’t necessary, Kristy heard a snap and looked down; the heel broke off her shoe.
Obviously attempting to make light of the situation, Robert smiled at her and said, ‘You sure you don’t wanna ride?”
“No, I’ll be fine, I’ll just take them off.” Leaning down to do so, Robert grabbed her arm to steady her as she wobbled.
“That’s not very safe, there’s broken glass and God knows what else on the ground out here. Plus, you can’t see where you’re going. Just let me give you a ride?”
Sighing, Kristy looked up at him and attempted to smile. She had a bad feeling about this, but she didn’t have much other options.
“Thanks… I’d like that.” She said, and he smiled, turning her around towards his truck.
Helping her up first, he jogged over to his side and jumped in. Kristy looked around the inside of the car and was glad to find it, for the most part, spotless. What one could assume was a coffee stain below her feet and an overflowing cigarette ashtray sit in the coin holder was the only hint of a mess.
Making small talk, Robert turned to her as he pulled out of the parking lot.
“So, I haven’t seen you at Ricky’s before, I normally go there every Friday. Except I missed last weekend… Don’t tell me I missed you’re 21st birthday!?” He exclaimed in mock devastation.
Laughing, she shook her head. “No, I normally don’t go out to bar’s, it’s not really my scene. In fact, my 21st birthday was spent at the beach with my parents a few months ago, no alcohol involved… Pretty lame, huh?”
He smiled at her. “Not at all. It’s probably a good thing a girl like you doesn’t spend too much time at the bar… It can be dangerous...”
There was that flash behind his eyes again. ‘And how long as his hand been on my knee?’ She asked herself.
Looking around, Kristy realized they were already parked outside her apartment complex. Breathing a slight sigh of relief that he’d actually taken her home, she turned back to face him and thank him for a fun time tonight.
Before her eyes could refocus back on him, his free hand was on the back of her head and his lips pressed tightly against hers. Gasping, his tongue gained entrance and the hand he’d had on her knee had moved up to her thigh and was gripping slightly.
Before any thought of reason could come to mind, she found herself kissing him back, their tongues intertwined, teeth nibbling and pulling. As his hand as crept higher, she felt his whole body shift and suddenly he had her pinned between his hard chest and the passenger side door.
Warm fingers caressed her stomach, making her shudder. Her head rolled back against the window and his lips trailed down towards her neck, kissing and sucking all the way until he reached the top of her mounds.
In the distance, and car alarm sounded and, gripped by reality, Kristy opened her eyes, placing her hands on Roberts’s shoulders.
“I-I’m sorry, I gotta go.” She said, waiting for him to move. His head came up from her chest and his eyes stared straight back into hers. This time, when she saw the flick of danger, it lingered.
“Um… I had a really great time, maybe we can do this some other time again, but I really need to get going…”
Still silent, he cocked his head, never blinking. He seemed to be searching for something in her eyes, some sort of answer.
Intensely aware that he was still on top of her, limiting almost any movement she could make, she tried to calm her breathing.
Slowly, his head came down and he placed a kiss on his lips, before climbing off slowly.
“I’ll call you tomorrow.” He stated, more then asked.
“Okay…”
Jumping out to open her door, Kristy tried to calm her breathing once again. When he opened her door, she let him help her down. Maybe he was a little aggressive, but then again, they had been drinking, she thought. Well, she had been, at least. She hadn’t seen him finish his second beer after he sat down with her, but she had defiantly had several, not counting the two she’s had before he came over.
Shaking off the thought, she let him walk her to the door, following slightly behind him due to her broken heel. When he came to a stop at her door, he turned around and smiled.
“I had a lot of fun tonight; maybe I could help you put your stuff in the moving van tomorrow? I know you’ll get in.” Winking, he smiled and she no longer saw the hint of danger; once again just laughter and fun.
She smiled back up at him and pulled out her cell phone, handing it to him to enter his number in. When he handed it back, she reached for her keys and opened her door.
She turned around to say goodbye, and was met again by an unsuspecting kiss. This one didn’t linger though; he pulled away and whispered goodnight, before turning around and heading to his car, all before she’d had a chance to respond.
Closing her door, she smiled and touched her lips, slightly swollen from the recent exchanges.
It was a good idea after all to let him drive her, she thought as she climbed into bed, already in nothing but a t-shirt to sleep in. Thinking about how he almost caught her staring at his butt when he reached her door and turned around, she smiled. It wasn’t until her head hit the pillow though, did she get a sinking feeling in her stomach.
He’d driven her home and led the way to her door, and although she mentioned to him that she lived the up the street while they were at the bar, never once did she mention the exact apartment complex… Let alone the apartment number.
