Prologue
When looking at the world through these eyes you can’t help but wonder, “What the hell?” I seem to see things from a different perspective than the mainstream. When many people find something funny I tend to find it a serious matter. When people see the tragedy in a situation, I look for the positive outcomes.
Why do I see the world from a different angle than everyone else? The hell if I know! Maybe I’m just too boss to let conformity get under my skin. Maybe I was just dropped on my head as a baby and my brain went screwy. Either way, if you want a closer look you’ll just have to take a spin in my shoes.

My name’s Shane. I’m a 20 year old female college student with a pension for stressing out. I’m single, studious, electronically saavy, and did I mention I’m black? Yeah, I break quite a few stereotypes after you complete that whole picture. Sorry to crush your hopes!
Anyway I’m an Asian Studies major with a minor in vocal performance (again with the breaking of stereotypes) at Richards College. Mind you, this school is practically in the middle of nowhere. Population: 600 students; majority white-American. African-American population: 2; and that’s 20 students, NOT 20% of the student body. Yeah, so we’ve been nicknamed the “Richards’ 20.” Though, trust, us 20 aren’t really close: I really only get along with one other.
Her name’s Alexis. She’s a freshman. Oddly enough, we met before the semester had started. Basically, she found love at first sight in my best friend of 7 years, Patrick. Long story, I’ll possibly save for later. Anyway, she wouldn’t leave us alone and in the process of practically stalking Patrick she sort of grew on us.
So Alexis, Patrick and me make up, what I coined, Riichards’ Musketeers. They said I was lame for that, but dude, I’m the leader and their criticisms are insignificant (j/k). But anyway, back to my not so interesting life and history. So there’s 20 of us Af-Ams and 18 of the others are a pretty close group of 9 guys and 9 girls. One of the guys is the star of my romantic fantasies. He’s also highly popular among the rest of the student body, seeing as he’s the star of the basketball team.
However, that has nothing to do with my crush. Yes, he’s one of the hottest guys at Richards, but I’ve noticed he’s got a side to him that the rest of the school seems to ignore. He’s a thinker, loves music, debates and writes poetry to list a few things. So basically the guy’s untouchable for a girl like me, even when ignoring the fact that he’s taken by the head cheerleader, Rachel. I mean the boy’s not even given me the time of day!
We have 4 classes together: Japanese, Music Theory, Ethics, and Short Story Comp. Not once in any of those classes has he even glanced at me. So obviously, I don’t even bother trying to attract his attention. But anyway…
What else should you know bout me? I guess you should know a bit about my home life. Not terribly exciting or anything. My parents are coming up on their 27th year, I have 2 brothers(25 and 17), my paternal grandparents are alive and well at the moment. My maternal extended family is very! Extended and I’d rather leave it at that.
So other than possibly going into great, boring detail, I’ll have to say this is the end of our little session. It was fun and all and maybe we can do it again sometime, but until then go do something with your life.
