Prologue
The sun rose quietly over the horizon as Keellen awakened to face the day’s work in the barn and in the field. His work takes almost all of his time, nearly working from dawn till dusk doing tasks such as milking cows, cleaning the over sized barn, feeding the barnyard animals, collecting chicken eggs, splitting fire wood and the like. He finished all that work by mid-afternoon; he then calculated the approximate amount of supplies that he amassed from the day’s work and all the extras he could trade.
The boy traveled into the underdeveloped town, his plain, messy shirt sticking tightly to his body, and found the market place where he could trade, barter and haggle over items and stock. He sold most of his extra provisions for meat and clothing for the whole family.
By the time he made it back to the little house, it was past dark. His siblings were already put to bed and he saw that his mother was seated in a chair in the kitchen/dinning room. The middle-aged woman cried there on the dinning room chair.“Mum, what's wrong?” Said Keellen, as he approached quickly to console her.“It's Caleb, he's, he's, he's...” She broke into sobs before she could finish her sentence.“Where is he? Where is he, Mom?” Keellen asked holding his mother.“He disappeared!” She cried out, completely breaking down.“Oh my Gosh! Mom, don't worry about a thing, I'll do everything i can to support us.” Keellen replied trying to calm her down, “Go prepare yourself for bed, you need rest, I'm gonna go bathe, I stink.”Katherine, or Kate, left the living room and went to bed still sobbing but slightly more relaxed. Keellen left the house and walked down the path to the pond. The path started by a big bush the continued beside fields of tomatoes, cucumbers, corn and other random vegetables. Further down the path was a slight hill making the barn and house invisible from the pond and vice-versa.The twelve-year-old boy striped naked and let the wind dry off the sweat of the day’s work. As he lay next to pond, he thought of what to do and about the family. Keellen was the eldest of three children, making him the man of the family, now. Before his father joined the militia to explore and protect the community from the natives. He pulled Keellen aside to talk“Keel, my son, I’ll be leaving for a while, and even if you’re only 10 years old, you’re going to have to take care of the family.”“Ok I will, I love you Dad” Keellen replied.“I love you too son.”So for two years Keellen took care of the farm and family. Keellen’s family consisted of his 2 younger siblings, Kyle and Kelly, who are 10 and 11 respectively, and Kate, Keellen’s mother, who’s 16 years older than Keellen, which for that day and age was very old to start having children. It has been 13 years that Keellen’s parents knew each other. Keellen’s father is of English descent while Keellen’s mother is of French descent. They met on a ship heading for new lands or newer efficient ways to get to lands already known. They ended up finding a new land then they started colonizing, building and farming.Kyle has become a very lazy child, without his father to put him in his place he doesn’t help with anything. Kelly on the other hand helps any way she can, either it’s cleaning or cooking, she knew it was very important to help.Keellen stood and looked down at the imprint in the lush, green grass. He smiled appraisingly at the imprint thinking it got quite bigger than the last time he made one. He turned and looked at the still waters of the pond, glittering in the moonlight. He jumped in headfirst and shivered in the cold water. Keellen then resurfaced, whipping his head back, followed by his blond hair, his eyes glowing red in the moonlight. He ran his fingers over his small frame spending slightly more time over his nipples, going down to his flat stomach.
He spent next to half hour swimming, bathing in the pond, and letting his body absorb the water, the moonlight and the water’s cold warmth. He leapt out of the water and let the wind and warm air dry him up. He dressed into the clothes he brought down with him and started to walk up the path to the house.Suddenly, something struck him, a stench emanating in the air. He immediately recognized the terrible smell. He ran over the hill and hid behind the nearby bush. He looked up at the barn, which was currently a burning inferno, with flames bursting through the windows, doorway and roof.He shifted his panicked gaze over to the house. He saw his mother and sister bent over on the dinning room table through the window. The men behind the women forced themselves into them as they began to scream. Their screams could be heard a mile away.Keellen then heard the back door open. He turned to view the action. More men walked out of the house with Kyle in tow. They pushed him to his knees and took out their sword. Keellen removed the scene from his field of vision and heard a slice then a thump of something falling.Keellen noticed that the screaming from the house had died out and turned his head to it. The sight of his mother and sister’s lifeless bodies lay on the dinning room table made him want to hurl in the bush, but he forced himself against it.“They can’t be average bandits; they seem too strong and skilled to be after only money.” He thought to himself.Keellen looked around the grassy floor around the bush and found a big, blunt wooden stick. He picked it up and in a blind yet silent rage, ran up to one of the men that was alone and hit as hard as he could to the back of his head. To say that the man was down is an understatement, juices from the man’s head leaked onto the ground. The sound of the blunt force trauma flowed through the air and alerted the assassins of his presence. Keellen noticed that everything went suddenly quiet, only the crackling of the burning barn. Then from the corner of his eye, he sees one of them running towards him.Keellen makes a quick dash towards the pond but as soon as he reached past the hill, he was grabbed and thrown into the gravel path. The men picked him up again and dunked his head into the pond. For a couple of panicked seconds Keellen was starting to lose consciousness. The man dunking him saw this and decided to finish this while the boy was conscious. He took out his sword and readied for the kill.Keellen started whimpering, struggling and pleading for freedom, but the other present men held him tightly in place. The man with the sword looked at the boy one last time and noticed something change. The boy’s eyes were losing all colour, going from a vibrant red to a cold steel gray. The man ignored this, kept his mind on the prize and finally swung his sword.Keellen screamed in response, then everything stopped, Keellen even couldn’t hear his own screaming yet he felt his vocals cords straining to his highest extent. Then an overwhelming sleepiness took all of his consciousness away...
And all was black...
