Chapter 1: Between Bad and Worse
---------------------------------------------
The first thing that you might ask Noah and Lucian if you were to meet them for the first time, pass them in the street, sell them a sandwich, or come by to fix their TV, would most likely be the same question that every other such person has always felt the need to ask;
Are you twins?
“I can’t believe this.” He whispered, hand shaking as it rose to cover his partially-gaping mouth, not even bothering to tuck away the wayward locks of hair that had come to fall uncharacteristically over his wide eyes - and distantly he felt the taller boy beside him shift closer. “You can’t do this to us.”
It wasn’t that they looked alike, you see. Not at all, in fact - they were quite almost the opposite of each other. Lucian with his short, dark hair and serious expression - he had always been the more muscular of the two, playing all manner of sports and the such at their high school. Noah, on the other hand, was what one would describe as more delicately framed; lean and thin, almost fragile-looking for a boy, with his long light-brown hair that he was so fond of tying into a ponytail to rest at the nape of his neck - Noah was the prankster, the bookworm, the scholar of the two. Indeed, very little about them was similar at all - except their eyes, and that was where people got it in their heads, that they ought to be twins; the same bright-blue eyes reflected on each face.
And that was why, whenever they were asked that oh-so-familiar question, their answer was unfailingly the same;
Yes.
“We know you’ll need time.” Their mother responded, her tone intended to be soothing and calm - but the boys’ hearts quickened at it. “Your father and I are in no rush. Things must be sorted first, arrangements made. You’ll have plenty of time to make your decision-”
“How can you possibly ask us to choose?” Lucian countered, the quickest to anger - and for once, Noah did not raise a hand to calm him. “We can’t, I mean... You can’t expect us to just be ok with this!”
The clock on the mantelpiece ticked idly by, suddenly louder than it ever had been before, as the air turned stale around them with the tension of the room. Everyone seemed to be squirming in one way or another, except their father, who remained perfectly still and entirely silent, perched in his old leather armchair, eyes far away from them all. Noah wondered idly if he had agreed to go willingly.
“What about James.” The shorter boy asked then, though in more of a statement, his voice gone flat and cold - and he could have sworn he felt Lucian shiver slightly beside him.
“Why, James will stay with me, of course.” Their mother answered quickly, as if their father were fighting to speak - but the man reacted no more than he had when they had entered the room for this so called ‘talk’. “It’s the two of you who we each have custody of, and it was the decision of the judge-”
“-Who cares what he says? We don’t have to do it that way, you guys can think of something else!-”
“-That you both should be awarded to one of us, one of you to live here with me, and the other to go with your father to his new home.” She finished with a smile, ignoring Lucian’s rebuttal entirely. “And you’ll be switching between us every other weekend, anyway, so it’s not like we won’t all see each other.”
Lucian frowned fiercely, his face gone slightly red with frustrated anger - an expression not unseen by him, but taken seriously. “Me and Noah won’t see each other a whole lot though, will we? What about us?” He demanded hotly, “What about how we feel?”
“Well, I expect that you’re rather upset about this all - it being quite a shock to you both.” Their mother, patting down her knee-long skirt, relied nonchalantly. “But I’m sure once you both settle in to the new routine, you’ll be perfectly happy - you might even prefer how things are when your father and I are separated! Two houses, two bedrooms-”
“-But we won’t be together, mum.” Noah interrupted quietly then, his tone not angry, but almost pleading. “We’ve always been together.”
“Oh, I know, dear.” The woman replied sympathetically then, reaching out one slender hand from where she sat to place it upon her son’s knee. “But you’re both getting older now, and your father and I have been meaning to get you separate rooms for some time - just think of this as an upgrade to that! Instead, you’ll share two bedrooms.”
“Might as well just put us on separate planets.” Lucian replied scathingly.
Their mother frowned. “I’m disappointed in you, Lucian. You should set a good example for your older brother by being the mature one here - think of what you’re doing to Noah.”
“What I’m doing to Noah?” Lucian shouted then, his face completely red, eyes now enraged - and any who knew him would tell you that that had been his last straw - as he stood and seethed at his mother. “You’re the one who wants us to be apart!”
Suddenly then, in a flourish of angry movement, Lucian grabbed a hold of Noah’s arm in a fierce grip, hauling the slightly smaller boy to his feet alongside him, Noah wide-eyed but unresisting - as his brother then, with one last resenting look, marched them away from the lounge room in which they had sat, and down the hallway to their room.
“Oh, darling, don’t be upset!” Their mother’s voice called to them, but Lucian did not turn, and Noah kept his head down. “Remember, your father and I still love you both!”
But Lucian only crowed a sardonic snort at the comment, and Noah frowned, as they both stormed into their bedroom, right at the end of the long hallway.
And Noah caught only a glimpse of their ten-year-old brother, sitting on the floor of his room playing with his action figures, and a bewildered expression on his young face - before their door was slammed shut behind them.
