No Business

It was 5 O’clock, and it was already getting dark. Addy decided to close the shop for the night. He recently opened a small pet shop a few weeks ago on a busy street, but business wasn’t going well, probably selling the odd fish or rat a day. Nothing went right for him, 21 years of age, no friends, and no family. He lived on the 2nd floor of some crappy apartment just about scrounging enough money for the rent, let alone to keep the shop open and care for all the animals. He exited through the back of the shop, as soon as he stepped out into the back alley; a cold gust of wind blew past him, his long black locks danced with the wind until it passed by. A few drops of water landed on his cheek, it was going to rain again. Luckily he had his long black leather coat on and an umbrella with him; he always got a hunch when it was going to rain.

He let out a sigh and locked the doors. He then erected the umbrella and put the keys in his pocket, and then there was a quick flash of light in the cloudy sky, followed a split second later with rolling thunder. Whilst letting out another sigh, he looked left down the dark path that led to a dead-end, and then he made his way to the opening on the right side of the alley. He exited the alley, no one was around, probably because of the rain, and as he took a few steps, there was another sound of crashing thunder but there was no lightning. In fact, it sounded like it came from the alleyway behind him. He turned around to see a single lamp that wasn’t working before, had lit up at the dead-end and there was something on the floor in the light, but he couldn’t make out what it was. He slowly went closer to the lit area, and as he got nearer he saw what it was. He was amazed, it was a boy and he was wearing white robes now dirty from the wet floor, but what amazed him was that he had wings coming out of his back, large white feathered wings, and from the looks of it, the right one was broken and looked burnt.

Addy continued to stare at the boy, till the thunder and lightning snapped him out of it. He then went and kneeled by him, placing his umbrella to one side and then he took off his coat to wrap it around the boy, being careful not to do further damage to the wings as he folding them to get them inside the coat. He lifted up the boy along with his umbrella and tried to cover the boy’s head even though he was drenched. A few minutes passed as he finally got to the apartment, and he got into his room, rushing the boy over to his bed and placing him down gently onto it, not caring that it was going to get wet. He went to his bathroom and grabbed a couple of towels; he took off his shirt and scrubbed his hair with one towel, then left it on his head where it hung limply. Addy looked over at the unconscious boy, then he made his way to the boy and started to take off the damp robes and everything underneath. He didn’t peek while doing so, but he was fascinated how feminine the boy looked, with spiky black hair and a slim pale body. Addy’s cheeks went slightly red while covering him back up with a pair of his boxers.

Addy then decided to check out the boy’s wing, since he had some spare pet stuff from the shop lying around; he collected them and stretched out the wing, and started cleaning the wound. The boy started to open his eyes slowly, “OW!” he cried out which shocked Addy. The boy quickly shot up and jumped over to the other side of the room and crouched on the wall, wings stretching fully to make him look bigger, feathers scattering all over the room. Addy could see in the boy’s liquid silver eyes how scared he was. The pain from the wing was too much; and the boy collided with the floor face first, giving him a nose bleed. Addy rushed over to help. “Are you ok?”, but the boy crawled to the corner shaking, guarding himself with the one functional wing. Addy let out a sigh and reached into his pocket, grabbing something and walking over to the boy where he kneeled in front of him and reached out to him. The boy closed his eyes in fear, but he felt something soft on his face, and he looked to see Addy wiping his face with a tissue, cleaning up the blood from his nose. “See, I’m not here to hurt you” Addy said in a calm voice. The boy loosened up a bit, and Addy grinned at him. “Now, what’s your name?” the boy looked down in shyness “Ka, Karnah”.

“Well Karnah, welcome to my place, I found you in an alley-way and I couldn’t just leave you there in the rain.” Addy said continuing to grin “Come back over to the bed and relax your wing” He never thought he’d have to say that to a person. He reached his hand out and stood up, the boy looked at his hand for a few seconds before deciding it was safe to do so. Addy pulled up Karnah and helped him back over to the bed and walked off into the kitchen. Karnah sat up against the wall on the bed half naked, and then he quickly put his hands over his crotch “Ahhh! Where are my robes?” Addy walked back in with drinks in hands “I put them in the washing machine to get them clean. Here.” Addy handed Karnah one of the drinks, who then grabbed the bed covers to cover himself up. “A washing machine? Is that what people these days use to wash clothing?” Karnah said with confusion upon his face, Addy gave the same expression back “You don’t know?” The boy looked back, seeming slightly annoyed “No, that’s why I asked, and what is this beverage you have given me, what is it?” Addy looked at the drink and looked back up, seeing Karnah waiting for an answer “It’s tea, and yes, we use washing machines to clean clothes” Addy watched him take a sip from the cup, “Blaa, ids howwible ‘nd ‘ot” he said sticking his tongue out from the taste and because of how hot it was. Addy let out a little chuckle “You haven’t got a clue have ya?” He put his cup on the desk next to the bed and leaned over to Karnah, making him slide back a bit “What are you?”
