Requiem

Prologue - The End

"Eve?" The question in his voice was almost too much to bear, but the hurt in his eyes was what broke her heart more than any harsh words could have.

She wanted to scream, to cry, to say something, anything, that would proove her innocence to him, but her throat wouldn't open, her eyes wouldn't sting, and her mouth wouldn't move. She was forced to watch as his gaze drifted from her face to her waist, an expression she couldn't decipher lighting his eyes as the arms resting there tightened. The lips at her ear whispered against her skin, leaving a warm wetness as they planted a kiss into the shell.

"I thought you said that he wouldn't be back," the mouth murmured, a warm cheek pressed against hers as the arms began to recede. Against her will, her hands flew up to grasp the wrists, keeping the strong arms locked around her. Her mind screamed her horror, but her face remained slack, blank, her eyes simply taking in the sight of the man she loved as the man she hated continued to lavish kisses on her neck and shoulder. Her skin crawled, but her head tilted to the side and her mouth quirked into a smile.

"I didn't know he was coming back so soon." Her voice sounded alien to her ears, a seductive purr that she was sure she had never used before.

Her love seemed frozen where he was, and she screamed at him in her mind, begging him to do something, to snap her body out of her ememy's control. Didn't he know that she would never betray him? Didn't he know that she would rather die than break his heart?

"It doesn't matter," her nemesis said thoughtfully, his mouth hovering over the spot just underneath her ear. He pressed a kiss to it, then, kneading his fingers into the skin of her belly, licked her pulse point and chuckled when she shuddered. "We were leaving anyway, right love?"

He looked at her then, taking his eyes away from the man behind her for he first time. There was a question in his eyes, a question that she wanted desperately to answer.

But she couldn't, and her mouth smiled although all she wanted to do was cry.

"Of course."

At her response, a darkness began to cloud her room, and the mouth, concealed by the clouds, turned harsh, biting at the sensitive flesh of her neck.

"Good girl, Eve... Now all I have to do is wait, and your little lover will come running." A rough hand fondled her breast and another slipped into the waistband of her cotton shorts, thin fingers running over her curls.

She only hoped that he was right.
