Why

Car horns blared as they whizzed down the busy street in downtown Hong Kong. It was sunny and fairly warm, yet the air smelled of car exhaust, dampering the beautiful day. In the middle of that block there lied a small shop. The bell above the door chimed softly as the two teens exited it.

“Hey Babe, I have to go now.” The girl says, her hand clasped firmly in the hand belonging to the male.

“Aww, come on Ming It’s only ten o’clock.” He whines softly to his girlfriend.

“Chen, you know how strict my RA is. My curfew is in half an hour.” She replies.

He sighs but nods anyway, realising her hand and giving her a quick kiss. “Ok. I’ll see you in class tomorrow, yea?”

“Of course, bright and early. That class is going to be the death of me.” She jokes.

He laughs softly, kisses her once more, and says goodbye to her. She smiles at him and heads towards the parking lot he watches as she gets into her small red car and pulls out into the street. He turns, and begins walking down the block to the bus stop.

No more than two minutes later the unmistakable sound of brakes squealing and the loud crunch of metal colliding with metal reaches his ears. Instantly, he turns and runs down the street, his heart beating wildly and his blood turning cold. Dread encompasses him as he nears the scene. There, mangled and destroyed, was a familiar tiny red car surrounded by a sea of black that used to be a car as well. His steps slow and he holds his breath. A crowd has already begun to form and he can hear the sirens in the distance, steadily approaching the scene. His eyes are locked onto that small amount of red. The sounds around him fade. All he can hear is his own heart beating wildly within his chest. Somewhere within that horrible mess was his girlfriend. He could not see her and he knew deep down that her chances were slim. There was too much damage. Her car never stood a chance against the far larger one.

The ambulance finally arrived at the scene. It was too much for him. What would he tell her parents?

Why?

Why her?

Why now?

With those thoughts he succumbed to the darkness that had been steadily creeping up on him and crumpled to the floor.
