New Beginnings

Hot. That’s all Rin could remember the place as she jumped off the bus and looked around trying to let her eyes adjust to the light of the burning sun. Her 16 year old Asian reflexes were not compatible to the hot summer sun that Texas had offered her four years there. She missed the cool breeze that Dallas had offered her, and the snowy winters it would bring every year, but Houston had only offered her a bad first day of school and a horrible humidity problem.

If it weren’t for her mother remarrying a Caucasian man, she wouldn’t have gotten herself into the mess of moving and making new friends down in the Houston area where humidity and ghetto places were abundant. She was of Filipino descent with mix cultures just spiraling down her blood; Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and many South-East Asia nations came from her family.

Rin Akarui was your average 16 year old teen, her black ravenous hair shone in the sunlight, her eyes dark as the evening sky and her tanned skin was slightly dark due from the long hours in the sun swimming. She was the stereotypical honor student that focused on her grades but had the rebellious look on her, with her rock band shirt that gently graced her top and the denim jeans that were beginning to tear at her knees. She carried her backpack towards her house and sighed, another load of homework that she’d never do as she could hear her parents argue through the front door.
It was the same old routine every day, come home, hear your parents argue, go to your room and hope for the best of it. While other days held a family dinner where they explained that they loved each other and fights were just a process of a minor disagreement between the two and her step-father’s addiction with alcohol. Rin never paid any attention as she would simply let it in one ear and out the other, and carry on with her routine of her redundant life. She thought that moving away 200 miles and more would give her a chance for a new beginning, a boyfriend who could understand what she really felt, but then again fairy tales are for the weak minded and lost.

David Greens wiped the sweat away from his face as he coughed, the cigarette bud almost slipped out of his mouth while he took another puff and exhaled. The nicotine addiction wasn’t bad, but the image of him looking like a total bad-ass made him grin inside. Despite the fact that he was only a 16 year old teenager out on the patio looking like a total moron alone, he inhaled the dangerous smoke and exhaled again.

He stood at a staggering 6 feet 3 inches and had a body of an amateur football player for the NFL, while his dirty blonde hair hid his hazel eyes from the world. His favorite red shirt was faded in the oncoming rays of sun, while his jeans almost sagged below his waistline; he looked like a ghetto wannabe. His Caucasian descent extended far; from Irish to Native American, David was the normal and average white male living in the hell hole of South Houston, with his divorced father and dogs. He was single and looking for the right girl after the many mistakes that he encountered in his first four years of dating the wrong women that were merely sluts or bitches. All of whom he’d dated turned up pregnant a few months after David had broken up with them, which only showed the true meaning that they wanted from him. His taste in women grew from a wide range of Caucasian females that caught his interest in the first few years he began to date, but he’d never dated African American, Hispanic, or Asian.

To him African American women were not his typical taste; they seemed a little out going and dominating. While the Hispanic crowd had some cute people, but he longed for commitment and not just a quick date that he’d probably have sex with. His mind began to wander to Asian women, they held potential of being loyal, committing, and very, VERY intelligent. He’d never met or dated an Asian girl and he had little expertise on how to meet one or even charm her. He’d have to ask his Asian friend about how to meet and date one as he smiled and finished off the small bud of his cigarette. He looked at the mere bud and flicked it to the ground and mashed it with his foot, as David felt his heart race at the thought of his first Asian girlfriend.

The first day the two had met, it was during their friend’s party. Rin, being the ever loyal friend traveled 10 miles just to see her friend who was in ailing pain. David, who enjoyed the company of his good friends, merely hung around them listening to the stories of one night stands with random girls from school that yearned to sleep with them and feel the pleasures of their bodies. As the two silently met eyes for a moment, Rin looked away, rushing to the aid of her friend as David quickly did a double take on the young woman who graced his eyes.

“Who was that?” He interrupted the conversation about football and diverted his attention to the young woman that just passed his way.

“Rin Akarui, my sister’s good friend and study buddy. Why’d ya ask?”
“I don’t know she looked kinda cute for an Asian dork.” David chuckled as his friends around him burst out laughing.

They all warned him of the consequences of asking her out, as they heard rumors of her dumping men for their stupidity and wanton need of bedding with her. Yet as stubborn as David was, he ignored the warnings his friends spoke about and quickly came up with how he could woo her to collapsing that wall of insecurity and hardship so he could know her. Know her and perhaps even learn to like the girl inside.

While Rin was ignoring the man who was following her, she had more important issues in mind, like aiding a friend in need or after a horrible break up with her newly ex-boyfriend. She sighed wondering if there was going to be the right guy for her friend, let alone herself. She found her friend on her bed in a cluttered mess of tears, sobs, and sniffles while Rin could only do her best to brighten her day even for a moment. Unaware that David had followed her to the room he paused and stared at the young girl aiding her friend and making her day, the young man smiled and walked back towards his friends who continued to speak about the nights they all experienced.

“Say David, have you experienced sex before?” The dark brown man poked David in the arm as the guys started to quiet down and listen to their friend’s comment.

“Actually guys I’m a virgin.” David casual spoke as the circle surrounding him broke into tears of laughter. “What I’m serious!”
“David Greens, the serious wannabe football player and one of the most popular guys at school has NOT been laid yet?!” His blonde friend teased him as David withheld his anger and drew a cigarette from his pocket to smoke his tension away.

“So what if I haven’t been laid yet? I’d rather wait until I find that right girl or something.” David lit his bud and breathed in the toxic smoke and stared at his friends.

“How about you go get that Rin geek? We’ve noticed you’ve been eyeing her this whole time at the party. Oh man I’d like to get in those Asian pants and see how tight that is.”

“Shut the fuck up Cesar, we all know you got Herpes from that bitch you did last night.” David spit back as his Hispanic friend giggled in protest.

“Speaking of Asian Pants look whose coming out to greet us! Hey Simon, did you get us the goods??” Cesar walked over and helped the older teenager with the 12 pack of canned alcohol and placed it cooler full of ice. “You want one David?”

“He broke up with you because he thought you weren’t good enough in bed for him?!” Rin nearly lost her cool and shook her head while her friend continued to whine and grope about her ex-boyfriend’s cruel break-up.

“Its just that Simon is still friends with that jackass and fucking invited him to this little get-together that he and his gay friends have.” Her sobs came from in between each four to five words as Rin gave her shoulders a tight squeeze.

“I have faith in you Lindsey, and besides you should find better guys that than dipshit prick anyway. I-I mean guy.”

“Thanks Rin, you are such a life saver! I love the crap out of you!” Her friend tackled her in an embrace as she laughed back knowing that her friend was feeling much better about herself.

The young Asian stood and turned back to the way she exited hoping that she could find her friend’s delinquent older brother who served alcohol to underage teenagers for get-togethers. Simon Kuwalat was from the Philippines like her, but he had a Caucasian foster father who helped him escape the poverty lifestyle they were living there back when he was only 8 and with his sister Lindsey who was only 3. Yet Rin was disgusted at the fact that he was now smuggling drinks for younger teenagers to get drunk by, and she was going to confront the mass of drunken men with only pepper spray.

David looked over and held the half drunken bottle of beer and saw the same Asian girl that had passed by him early. Her eyes filled with grotesque hatred as she pushed her way through the boys and confronting Simon.

“What the hell Simon?! You know better than giving guys like em fucking alcohol!

“Hey bitch, I invited you to help my sister not fucking nag at me like my asswipe of a mother!”

“Fuck you Simon I hope you go to jail and rot there for this bullshit.”

Simon grabbed her wrist and tightly gripped it as Rin gasped in pain,
“Fuck you! You can’t tell me what to do!” As he gripped tighter and the girl began to struggle against his strength and hand.
“Simon! ENOUGH!” David pushed the man away from the girl and watched him trip over the cooler and on his back. “Don’t you EVER hurt a girl in front of me!”

“Hey David, you chillax! This is over me and that bitch right there!”

“I don’t need your help,” Rin looked over David and held her right wrist concealing her pain. “Why don’t you just go back getting drunk with your fucking idiotic friends?”

Rin walked away from the group of men as David looked at his already drunk comrades and turned to go after the girl to properly apologize and explain why he had stood up for her. While Rin, felt her independence shatter when the young man had offered to stand up for her and all she could do was sigh. The same sigh she had released in the time of tension and frustration, her mind wandered as she tried to ignore the young man who ran towards her direction.
