Chapter One
Julie woke to a beautiful morning but with a sense of dread. Today was the day she was moving into the dorm at the local university. Even though home was twenty minutes from campus, her parents wanted her to move out so that “she could make friends.” Yeah right. Her parents just wanted her out of the house so that they could travel and not worry about her throwing a party and trashing their party.
Sighing Julie got out of bed and went to shower. As she walked back to her room her pet cat Yuki came out from under the bed and meowed a greeting. Smiling at the sight Julie got dressed and picked up the cat. “I wish I could bring you with me,” she whispered softly.
Yuki had been her only friend all through high school. She had been the nerd of her grade, choosing to study rather than party. At first invitations to o the movies or just hang out had been in abundance but she kept turning them down and invites soon became nonexistent. Julie much preferred the company of books rather than people as they allowed her to escape to a world where anything could happen. This was one of the reasons why her parents thought her strange.
“Julie, get down here and help your father finish putting your stuff in the car. We have a six pm flight to catch and I don’t want to be stuck unpacking all day,” her mother yelled from downstairs.
Sighing with frustration Julie put down the cat and went downstairs to find her parents. Hearing loud grunts and curses from her dad she headed to the garage, and found her dad trying to fit everything in the car while her mom stood back giving directions.
“George you know Julie cannot take all of her books. That dorm is barely big enough for two people. What do you think her roommate would think if she saw all those books?”
Struggling with the boxes George took a minute before answering. “Well, she’s not going to want to keep them here. You know how much she loves to read, she is taking the books and that is final.”
George was met with a scowl from Lisa before she turned around and spotted her daughter. “Finally you’re here. Help your father finish so that we can get out of here.”
“Yes mother dear,” Julie replied sarcastically. Sometimes she really couldn’t stand her mother. Moving toward some boxes she began loading the car and before they knew it the car was packed and ready to go. Closing the hatch George turned to Julie and gave her a smile.
“You ready for the rest of your life kiddo? I remember my first day-“
“Dad! Please I beg of you no more stories of your college years. I have heard them all and know all about your crazy college days. Now can we please just get of here? You and Mom need to leave soon and I just want this day to be over with.”
Frowning at the note of sadness in he voice George was about to question her when they were interrupted by Lisa ushering them into the car. Clamoring inside they headed off toward Luther University.
Named after the prominent Luther family who built it in 1825 it had begun as a simple schoolhouse and as the town had expanded they kept adding onto it. Today it was a major university with excellent programs for anyone interested in the arts and sciences. Julie was going there one because it was close to home and two because she hoped to one day be a published writer or at least work in the book world. And at Luther she’d get a halfway decent education and maybe one day her dream would come true.
As they finally pulled up to the main campus Julie’s heart sank. She truly didn’t want to do this. What if people didn’t like her? Then what was she supposed to do? It wasn’t like she could go home and escape the dorm life as her mom had decided to also take her house key just to be safe so that she wouldn’t throw a party. Like she had the friends to do that; Julie almost wanted to laugh at the idea.
Julie had received all of her information in the mail two weeks ago. She was rooming in the Elm dorms and her roommate was some girl names Isabella Thrum. Julie had never shared a room with anyone before as she was the only child and was not keen on the idea of sharing a room with a complete stranger. Julie had tried to contact Isabella before school started but whenever she called Isabella either couldn’t talk or wasn’t home.
Finding her dorm fairly easy all three got out and began to unload the car. Her parents grabbed two boxes and headed inside wanting to find the room first. Julie grabbed a box of books deciding she could at least unload a couple of boxes before they came back she lost her grip and had the box land on her foot. Hopping and grabbing it while cussing up a store she accidentally bumped into a solid chest. Not expecting to, she began to fall and tried to brace herself for impact when she felt two strong, very well muscled arms wrap around her and lift her as if she weighed nothing.
“Are you okay?” a deep male voice whispered in her ear. Feeling her throat dry instantly, all she could do was nod and turned her head toward the sound of the voice. She was met with two gorgeous green eyes that were shining with amusement.
A/N: chapter two should be up by the end of next week if not sooner and Julie will be meeting Brett Luther.
