The Breakup

The phone in my office rang as I got in. That’s the story of my life, I guess, everyone always wants something from me. I suppose that’s what happens when you become a buyer for a large corporation like Wallie’s at twenty-three, everyone thinks you did something special to someone to get there. The truth is, I’m just good at what I do.

“Coleman,” I said into the phone, knowing there’s only one person who’d call me at this time of day.

“Hey, Ani!” I was right. It was my fiancé, Robert Highfield. He’s one of only two lawyers in town, the more talented one in my opinion.

“Hi Bobby. What’s up?”

“I’ve got tickets to the Opera tonight. They’re playing your favorite, Der Vampyr. Wanna come? I’ve got box seats.” It was so cute that he thought I actually like the Opera. I went once because everyone was raving about it, saying that it’s the best thing they’ve ever seen. It’s too bad that I didn’t understand a word of it. What can I say; I’ve never been fluent in German.

“Sorry Bobby. I’ve got dinner with my parents tonight. Maybe a rain check?”

“Sure thing, Sweets. I’ll call you later.” And with that he hung up. As I put down the phone my Boss, Dianne, knocked on the door and came in.

“Anastasia?” She was a quiet woman but could be very assertive when she wanted to be. It was a little unnerving, actually. “Mr. Blackstone just arrived and he’s in the conference room. He’s not a man you want to keep waiting. You ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be.” I picked up my briefcase and followed her to the conference room.

The meeting went well. Mr. Blackstone was the man in charge of Blackstone Apparel, our largest clothing distributor. Our contract with them was up for renewal and I, being the Star Buyer, was in charge of making the contract. I had heard rumors lately that they were starting to lose business due to unreliable employees and I was able to use this information to get them to drop the price by a full 5% over 2 years.

I decided that I needed to celebrate a bit before my parents bored me to tears that night so I finished my work in record time and decided to take a cab to Rob’s house.

“Where to, Miss?” the driver asked in a thick Pakistani accent. I gave him the address to Rob’s house and sat back. I reapplied my lipstick and just relaxed the rest of the way. I smiled to myself as I pictured the surprise on Rob’s face when I arrived, ready to just give myself over to him.

Unfortunately, I was the one in for the surprise.

I grabbed a cab to his house, grudgingly paying the driver $14 or the fare. I swear, ever since they raised gas prices everyone’s paying.

When I got to the door I noticed it was ajar. Rob had a bad habit of leaving it open. Even though we live in Smithton it’s still dangerous and he really should know better. I teased him about it every chance I got.

“Hey Rob,” I called as I pushed the door open and walked in. “It’s a burglar come to take all your stuff.”

There was a crash from the other room followed by Rob running out the door from the bedroom with a sheet wrapped around his waist.

“Sweetie?” He seemed a little distracted, as if he was trying to make something up on the fly. Robert never did have much imagination. “What are you doing here? I thought you were at your parents tonight.” I looked into his eyes and saw something that told me he wasn’t alone

“It’s her again, isn’t it?” This wasn’t the first time he’d cheated on me. In fact, he’d cheated on me at least twice that I knew of. It was with the same woman too. At least he was a consistent slime ball.

“Her? Her who?” He was trying to play ignorant, but that was a little hard to pull off with his lipstick-smeared face. That was it. My last straw broke right there. I had told him last time that I would only put up with so much of his bullshit.

“Stop playing games, Robert,” I said. Last time I caught him I had screamed and yelled until I was blue in the face. He obviously hadn’t cared, so I decided to try something new. I stayed calm. He wouldn’t make me into the bad guy this time. “You know exactly who. Sally, your old girlfriend, that little slut you were seeing behind my back last time too. Did you think I didn’t know who it was?”

“Honestly, Ani? Yes I did! I thought that you were spending so much time at the office that you’d never even notice! What made you get off your fucking high-horse and join the land of the living for once in your ‘busy’ life?”

I barely remembered slapping him, but I did remember the sting on my palm and hearing a crack from his jaw. I turned red with anger. At the time I just thought it was at being betrayed, but he was right. I HAD made work my priority ever since the promotion. I wanted to yell at the top of my lungs. I wanted to rip him limb from limb.

But I couldn’t. It was all I could do to hold back the tears as I walked to the bathroom ignoring the shock of blond hair on his pillow as I passed by his bedroom. I grabbed my spare toothbrush and book from the ledge where I had kept them for half of our 3-year relationship and left.

“It’s over, Rob,” I said simply as I passed by him. “I hope you’re happy.” I closed the door behind me as I left.
