Chapter One
“First Kiss”

As I lay In my room, I thought about those that slept soundly in the house around me. My father and his girlfriend were two rooms down, my older sister, she was right across the hall. I wondered if they were afraid of the darkness that crowded the rooms as the sun fell. Mina would call me a baby for even thinking like this, but I couldn’t help but be afraid. What did that darkness hide? What evil was festering in the unknown? These are questions that I alone wanted answers to. I laid there in the darkness of the coming dawn, and as the sun rose, I stood and watched myself in the mirror as the bright sun illuminated my wide awake body. In the mirror I saw a pale white chest, strong lines in my arms and legs, and a clean face. But the next thing I saw scared me, my eyes, they were red.

I looked again, but the moment had passed, my eyes were once again their usual shade of steel gray. I stood up as I heard a door slam. It looks like my sister’s awake. I sighed, she was a real bitch in the morning.

“Kamue!!” She called as she banged on my door. “It’s time for school!!! So get up!!” She yelled, each word accented by a knock on my door.

“I’m awake.” I said quietly, knowing fully that she had already started the shower in the bathroom and couldn’t hear me. Then I heard my father’s door open and light footsteps on our bare wood floors. Michelle, my father’s girlfriend, was awake too. The footsteps stopped outside my door.

“Kamue. It’s time to get up. You know you need to get there early for detention.” She said through the thick wood of my door. Her words brought my mind to school and the odd way my best friends had been acting lately.

I had two very best friends that I had grown up with since forever. Lately they had been acting like I had a disease that was contagious. I hadn’t even spoken to either of them in well over a week. That was around the time that my homeroom teacher, Mr. Rade told me that I would have to report for morning detention until my grades improved. Rade is his first name, his last name, that no one uses, is Yamada. He is a very good looking man around the age of twenty-five. All the girls love him, including my best friend Karline. Luckily my other best friend is a guy, Markus, he used to say that all the girls would die if Mr. Rade ever got married. But, Mr. Rade is single and never ever seems to have a girlfriend or even a woman at all around him, so they all should survive. Even older guys flock to him like pigeons, but he holds himself aloof of all of it. It’s been heard around school that he might like a student in one of his classes. But that’s just speculation. He wouldn’t ever break a rule, although he’s a cool guy, he’s strict when it comes to school rules.

But, back to the matter at hand, my friends have deserted me and I have morning detention, which basically means that I’m at school at five-thirty in the morning, two hours before any other students. I sighed as I flipped the light switch, shedding light on my room; my father calls it a pigsty, but at least I know where everything is. I drew on my uniform; it’s a pair of black slacks, a white undershirt and a black jacket. I hit the light switch as I left my room and headed down to the kitchen. I turned on the hot water in the sink and left the house just in time to hear my sister shriek, but not get yelled at for it. I caught the bus to my school in silence. Itadamizu Senior High School was eerily dark, I mean the lights were on and stuff, but it seemed evil as I entered the administration building.
Mr. Rade was waiting for me in the main office with a frown on his face.

“You’re late again, Kamue.” He said, his voice soft yet firm.

“I know, I had trouble sleeping last night.” I said and followed him to his office.

“If you are continually late to detention, I’ll have to assign you more work, which means more detention.” He said as we walked. I nodded sullenly, I didn’t want to spend anymore of my time in detention, although Mr. Rade was a very nice guy. We reached his office in a matter of minutes. He unlocked the door and I sat down across from him at his desk. He opened his laptop and started clicking away at the keys. I longed to ask what he was doing, but whenever he had his laptop, he wouldn’t talk to me unless it was about my work.

“Kamue, how would you like to help me out with a project I’m working on?” He asked without looking up from his laptop. I looked up at his laptop in shock.

“What kind of project?” I asked quietly.

“Come around here and take a look at this, after all you are a blueprinting student, I want your advice.” He said, meeting my gaze, the amount of passion in his eyes burning me inside. He likes me, I thought as I walked around to look at his laptop, no, that is impossible, I said to myself and shook off the thought of passion between me and Mr. Rade. I scanned the screen of his laptop and noticed that it was a blueprint for a house. But something was off, I had been studying blueprints for three years now, so I recognized the format and the scale, but the house seemed wrong somehow. It was then I realized that the blueprint was that of the new house my father was having built for my family now that his girlfriend is pregnant. Father is even talking about marrying her.

“You’re the architect working on my family’s new house?” I asked as I once again met his gaze. He smiled a soft smile and nodded.

“I wanted your input. I wanted to make sure that you’d be happy with this arrangement.” He said firmly, questioningly. His gaze locked me in place as his eyes seemed to search my soul. “If you ever need a friend, I’m here.” He said and then looked away, as if he were releasing me from his spell. I shook my head and looked at the blueprint again.

“This is to be my new room.” I said and pointed to the second largest room in the new house.

“Ah. Yes I remember, your father said that he hoped you’d have more trouble turning a bigger room into a... pigsty.” He laughed as he spoke. I blushed.

“Y-yeah…heh, heh…he’s cruel sometimes.” I said quietly.

“Do you see anything weird about the siding under your room?” He asked subtlety. I looked at the blueprint and noticed that he had placed a trellis under my window. “That exit is for you to use whenever you need to get away. My address is on the back of this card.” He said and handed me his business card. Sure enough, his address and home phone number where written in his handwriting on the back.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked as I sat down across from him again. He laughed and closed his laptop.

“I know what it’s like to have your friends turn on you, I also know what it’s like to have unanswered questions.” He said as he looked into my eyes. It felt as if he were looking deep into my soul. How did he know that my friends were against me? How did he know about my questions? I didn’t have the nerve to ask so I put his card in my jacket pocket and tried to focus on my school work. He reopened his laptop and we worked in silence until the bell rang for homeroom.

We walked into his classroom as the rest of my class arrived. Before I could sit down he slipped something into my jacket pocket. Once I sat down and he began to take roll, I took out a note from my pocket and opened it.

Kamue, I still want your help on my project. Please stay after school today so that we can work things out.
-Rade

He really wanted me to help him in designing my house. That made me feel good. But then I looked over at my “best friends” and saw something I hadn’t seen before. They were holding hands. I had always hated girls, but Karline was different. She was just like one of the guys and now, she and Markus were going out? That disgusted me. I never understood my deep hatred of girls but I think it stems from Michelle. My mom died when I was five and Michelle took a hold of my father a month later. She has been in my life for twelve years now, and she knows I hate her. She knows that the only thing keeping me from flat out hurting her is that she sides with me when me and father are arguing. She won’t ever disagree with me, she’s afraid of me, and that’s how I like it.

I tried to focus on the board, but…that meant focusing on Mr. Rade. He was wearing a black suit with a red silk shirt and a black tie. The girls were already staring at him and it was only seven in the morning. When I looked up, I caught his gaze on me, and my earlier prediction, that he liked me, was reinforced. We worked for an hour on redefining our “future”. What that basically means is that we had a hour to finish up our plans for our future. He had given the assignment out a week and a half ago and I’d finished mine the very day, but now as I looked through my book bag, it was no where to be found. I rummaged through my notebook and my laptop bag, but my plan wasn't there either. I pulled out my laptop and looked for the file, but even that was missing, and I know I didn’t delete it, I don’t delete anything, I still have documents from my sixth grade year. When Mr. Rade approached the table where me and my “friends” sat, I hung my head and said I must have left it at home. Markus turned in his a few days ago and Karline handed hers in as I watched.

“Kamue, Markus, I think the three of us should step into my office. Karline, you’re in charge of the class.” Mr. Rade said and led me and Markus into his office. “Markus, would you care to explain why you handed in Kamue’s work, but with you’re name on it?” He asked as we sat down. I looked at Mr. Rade and then at Markus.

“I didn’t, I handed in my own work.” Markus said, not meeting either of our gazes.

“You’re lying.” Mr. Rade said with a hint of anger in his voice.

“Do you have any proof?” Markus asked with a hint of malice in his voice.

“I do.” Mr. Rade said and laid my plan on his desk, it had Markus’s name on it, but it was my plan nonetheless. “I know Kamue’s writing style, Markus. You own him an apology.” Mr. Rade said and waited. Markus stood up and left the room quietly. I sighed and stood up as Mr. Rade did. “This has happened before?” Mr. Rade asked. I nodded and we went back to the classroom in silence. “Markus, you are to stay after school for a week to make up this assignment.” Mr. Rade said, with a hint of unrestrained anger in his voice, and sat down at his desk. I sat back down at my table and wished that I had never been born. The day passed quickly and soon it was me, Markus and Mr. Rade sitting alone in the classroom. “Markus, you are to work on your report while you are here. Kamue, please come into my office, we need to work on the project.” Mr. Rade said with a finality that seemed to echo within the empty classroom. Mr. Rade and I walked into his office and he left the door open so that he could keep an eye on Markus. “Kamue, how many times has he done this?” Mr. Rade asked quietly as we sat down behind his laptop.

His question threw my mind back into the past; Markus had always needed my help on reports, he’d beg me to let him copy my work ever since we entered middle school and even after I’d helped him finish his, he’d ask to see mine. This time was similar in the fact that Markus had asked to see my report, but the difference was that I told him no.

“Kamue, are you here with me?” Mr. Rade asked, bringing me back to the present.

“um…yeah… he’s always asked to see my reports, since we were in middle school.” I replied, looking at the model of my new house on the screen of his laptop. Mr. Rade looked upset, angry even.

“Did he ask to borrow this report?” he asked without looking at me.

“He did, but I told him no, it was the first time I have ever refused to let him see my work and I think it pissed him off.” I said, looking through the doorway to where Markus was sitting, talking on his cell phone. Mr. Rade followed my line of sight and noticed that Markus was on his cell phone.

“Excuse me for a moment, Kamue.” He said and left the office, walking right up to Markus. “Markus, hand me your cell phone and you can leave for the day.” He said loud enough for me to hear.

“Mr. Yamada, I don’t have to listen to you now that school is over.” Markus said, insulting Mr. Rade by using his last name.

“You’re in detention, Markus, you do have to listen to me, now hand over the cell phone, and get out of my classroom, your father can come and pick up your cell phone tomorrow.” Mr. Rade said, reigning in his anger at being disobeyed by Markus. I watched as Markus stood up and turned to leave but that’s when things got blurry. I remember Mr. Rade reaching for him but the next thing I know, I’m being shaken awake by Mr. Rade and Markus’s cell phone is on Mr. Rade’s desk.

“Kamue….” I heard Mr. Rade say, but I didn’t see his lips move. I sat up and looked around and noticed that Mr. Rade had a little bit of blood on his right hand. “Are you alright, Kamue?” He asked as I grabbed his hand. He noticed the blood and grimaced, he pulled away from me and went to the sink near the classroom door. I followed him to make sure he was alright.

“Mr. Rade, are you okay? Do you need the first aid kit?” I asked as he washed his hand and wrist, the wound looked like claw marks, three of them, that spanned the space between his wrist and his knuckles in a set of diagonal lines.

“I’m fine, but yeah I think I need the kit.” he said, his mind obviously somewhere else. I got the kit from in the classroom and noticed that there was a small puddle of blood near Markus’s desk, and a trail of droplets leading to Mr. Rade’s office. When I got back to Mr. Rade, he was sitting down at his desk with paper towels over his hand. I knelt before him and sat the kit down beside me so that it was well within reach. I took his arm gently and took some antibiotic ointment from the kit and gently dressed the wound. I bandaged his wound while he watched in silence.

“Mr. Rade, did Markus do this?” I asked as I finished dressing the wound. I looked up at him and saw the passion in his eyes again, and again I was mesmerized by his glowing, crystal, eyes. He laughed.

“You can call me Rade, being called mister, it makes me feel old.” he said, looking down into my eyes. I suddenly felt very weird and jumpy, as if electricity was running rampant through my very veins. He leaned towards me ever so slowly, like he was approaching a skittish animal. I couldn’t move, it was like he had me locked in place with his gaze. I knew what he was going to do, but there was nothing I could do to stop him, hell, I didn’t even know if I wanted to stop him. He leaned closer to me and whispered into my ear three words, “I Like You.” and then he brushed his lips across mine in a swift kiss. He raised his hands so that he could caress my jaw line and soon they wound themselves into my short black hair. I felt his lips move against mine in three distinct words; ‘Open to me’, with those words as his last, Rade deepened the kiss and slowly inserted his tongue into my mouth. I felt my eyelids drift shut. It felt as if I were watching a movie of my life. He made me feel such weird things, so I let him continue kissing me.

“Rade” I heard myself say, but it didn’t sound like I had said it, his name seemed to take on this whole new meaning. He abruptly pulled away, making my eyes shoot open, and looked deep into my eyes, as if he had realized something. He held me at arms length, a slight blush across his nose.

“Kamue, I…” he started and laughed, “thank you.” I know I had to look like a cherry or something, I knew I was blushing like crazy, and I had no reason why, but I lunged forward and wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. He made a surprised squeak and that surprise was mirrored in his eyes but then they slid shut and he wrapped his arms around me. I felt as if someone or something had taken over my body and was trying to act out my wildest fantasies. I allowed him to take control of the kiss and he slowed and gentled our movements until he gently ended the kiss.
