Big Poppa

Big Poppa

Imagine a large, greasy garage. The long, high walls are covered with shelves and workbenches, the concrete floor is separated into sections for their different purposes, and there is a separate area for spray painting, a room with large cutting machines, a canteen and offices. Imagine all that, and you know where Delwyn was going to work.

He would be an apprentice, for the next year. Fresh from school, still wet behind the ears, unaware of what he was about to do. The school had arranged this job. He’d been educated for a few years now, and he knew how to cut metal, how to weld, restore, paint and wire cars. Delwyn had been the best of his class. Delwyn was good.

But now he was standing in the middle of the garage, looking around, watching the greasy men run around and working between what once were cars and what had to become hotrods, and he felt lost. This was slightly different from class. Here, you wouldn’t get a piece of metal and a welding gun, with the assignment to make a nice, clean repair. If you screwed up here, the results would be far worse than a bad grade on your report.

Work here meant pressure. Deadlines. And no room for error.

“Delwyn, right?”

The boss came towards him, hand reaching out to shake. Delwyn shook it firmly –firm grip, good first impression– and nodded.

“Welcome, lad. I’m Chapman. Follow me.”

Delwyn was led to one of the cars, and was introduced to the three mechanics. There were even more mechanics working on other cars, all in different stages of completion, and Chapman led Delwyn around all of them.
Too many names to remember, for now. They didn’t look like they liked to have him around, either.

“You’ll be working with Big Poppa,” said Chapman, beckoning him to follow him to the office. “He’s out today, but you’ll meet him later. He’s at the large convention in the North, did you hear about it?”

Delwyn nodded again. He’d heard about it, and had been sorry he had to start today. He’d rather been at the meeting.

“Poppa is our champion,” continued Chapman. “He’s the best welder in the world.”

Yeah, yeah. Blah, blah. Delwyn lost interest as the boss kept glorifying his mechanic, and furtively looked around. The framed photos were interesting, with beautiful cars, celebrities shaking hands with Chapman, before-and-after pictures and pretty ladies. Well, those ladies were less interesting, Delwyn had to admit.

“So when you meet him, remember what I said, alright?”

Blinking, Delwyn focused on what Chapman said, and tried to remember what he’d heard. He couldn’t quite recall a warning… “Alright,” he said hesitantly. Should he ask what the warning was?

Chapman laughed at the hesitant tone, and waved at Delwyn. “He isn’t as bad, trust me. Once you know how to behave around him, he’s even quite easy to work with. So, remember what I said, and you’ll be fine. Now go to the guys over there, and look at how they prepare the chassis for painting, hm? There’s a good lad.”

“Sure. Thank you, Mr. Chapman,” said Delwyn, getting up. Oh dear. If only he’d paid attention now… Well, maybe the men could tell him a thing or two about this Big Poppa, who apparently was scary and unfriendly. Delwyn was a bit nervous now.

He joined the two guys and sat nearby them, to watch them work without being in their way. They didn’t seem talkative though. Seemed he was on his own, for a while.
