Chapter One
Taylor Bradshaw was a self-made man. He had been born in a small Iowa farming community and was the son of a farmer. He had had a normal childhood and didn’t regret any of it, but there had always been a sense that he was destined for greater things. Throughout school he was a straight A student, spending all his available time with his nose in books. When he was eighteen he was accepted to Harvard Law, and was sent off from his hometown with a big celebration and all the support anyone could ask for; after all it wasn’t very often that someone from a small farming community was accepted to a big, prestigious school like Harvard.
Taylor graduated by the time he was twenty-two and was soon offered a job with a law firm in LA called Garfield & Sons. By twenty-eight he had been made partner and was enjoying life. Taylor worked all day and would party on the weekends, enjoying one of his many ladies friends on a daily basis. That was soon going to change though.
One Saturday morning Taylor woke up to a knock on his door. He rolled over with a grunt and saw that it was six-thirty. “Who the hell could that be?” he wondered. Slowly getting up, he put on some sweat pants and walked over to the door. Opening it he at first didn’t notice the little girl standing in front of him until she let out a small giggle.
Jumping back in surprise Taylor looked down and his eyes widened in surprise at the little girl in front of him. She had long, straggly brown hair that hid half her face, letting only one huge blue eye peek out. Taking in the rest of her appearance he was shocked to see that her clothes had holes in them and appeared to be quite malnourished. Taylor stuck his head back out into the hallway and saw no one to who the little girl might belong to.
Bending down on one knee he stared into the little girl’s eye and quietly asked her “Do you know where your mommy or daddy is?”
The little girl just continued to stare at him, neither moving nor speaking. Taylor continued to question her but could get nothing out of her. Letting out a huge sigh he decided to invite her in until he could get dressed and take her back downstairs to see if security could tell him if they had seen her with anyone. Running a hand through his hair he stepped back and held the door open, “Come on in. I’ll fix you some pancakes or waffles or whatever it is a kid eats, until I can figure out who you belong to.”
The little girl smiled and actually pushed back her hair, revealing both eyes, at the mention of breakfast. Taylor guided her into the kitchen and went to the cupboard pulling out all the utensils that he would need in order to cook. Putting everything on the island he watched as the girl seated herself upon the stool. “How did she come to be here? Where are her parents? Besides what kind of parents would let their child run around looking like she is?” he couldn’t help but wonder.
While fixing the pancakes he noticed that the child looked around the apartment in amazement; she especially seemed interested in the T.V. Making sure the pancakes wouldn’t burn he went over and turned it on, handing her the remote. The little girl gave him a huge smile and almost ran over to the couch in order to be closer to the television. Taylor left her curled on the couch flipping happily through the channels. Breakfast was soon ready and taking a plate over to her, he found her curled up hugging a pillow to her chest while some kids show played on T.V.
Taylor couldn’t help but smile at the scene. Deciding to shower and change before taking her downstairs, he left the plate on the coffee table and covered her with a blanket.
As Taylor headed to the bathroom he considered what he would do with the child if the security guard didn’t know who she was or who she belonged to. After showering and dressing Taylor headed back to the living room and found the girl shoveling the pancakes into her mouth like no tomorrow. Making sure the girl noticed him he headed back towards the kitchen and got her another plate. The girl smiled at him as he handed it to her.
Sitting down across from her he slowly watched her eat. “Um, pumpkin or sweetie,” Taylor said quietly, “I’m going take you downstairs and ask the security guard if they know where your mommy or daddy is okay?”
The girl quickly glanced up at him in fear as she let the words sink in. What would he do to her or put her if the friendly guards didn’t tell him what he wanted to know? Would he hit her as others had done? She liked him didn’t want to leave him; hopefully he would let her stay.
As Taylor told her what he planned to do he watched a play of emotions cross her face. Not knowing what to do he quietly put the dishes in the sink and took the girl downstairs. Once reaching the lobby he led her over to the guard sitting behind the desk.
“Good morning Mr. Bradshaw,” Larry O’Brien said as he shifted around on the seat. He had been there since six am and was very uncomfortable at just sitting around, he was a man that need adventure and excitement in his life, not being the guard for an upscale apartment complex. Larry then noticed the girl standing behind Taylor’s legs. His eyes widened in shock at the girls appearance and before he could stop himself he heard himself saying “Mr. Bradshaw who’s the child and why is her clothes in tatters?”
“Well, I was hoping that you would be able to tell me that. I found her at my doorstep at around six-thirty and she seems mute. She won’t tell me at all who she was with or where she came from. Obviously she had to come through the front doors so I was wondering if you had seen anything?” Taylor answered.
Larry looked dumbfounded at the explanation. “I’m sorry sir, but I came on at six this morning and didn’t see anyone enter or exit the building until around seven. I have no idea as to where she came from.”
“Alright, we’ll thanks for your help.” Taylor was not pleased once he heard the security guard’s answer. What was he supposed to do with the girl now? Should he call child services? No they took too long and how was he supposed to know that the child would be placed in a good enough home. He did know someone who could help him though, his friend James Wings.
“Come on, we’re going to go see a friend of mine who might be able to help us,” he said to the child as he took her hand and led her out onto the streets of L.A.
