Chapter One
The bar was packed when Kayla finally arrived. She had thought about staying home that night, but to the persuasion of her friends, she decided to come down and check out the local band. It was noisy, jarring almost, and Kayla considered leaving as soon as she stepped foot in the place. The band was too loud, so much so that she couldn’t even understand what they were singing about. Several times the mics would scream with feedback, and she’d just grit her teeth and continue the search for her friends. Squeezing past dancing bodies, she finally found her friends sitting on a leather couch close to the back of the bar, sipping on their girly drinks. Mi-Hi Kim, Mimi to her friends, waved at Kayla excitedly.
“Come quickly! We saved you a seat AND bought you a drink!” Kayla had to smile at her. She was easily one of her closest friends. Whenever Mimi was around, Kayla could feel her spirits lift instantly.
“Ok, ok, if you insist. Coming through!” Kayla narrowly missed a collision with a spastic dancer before finally landing on the couch beside Mimi. Picking up her drink, she took a small sip. She was a strict girly-drink type of girl. Beer would not come close to her lips. Even the smell of it made her nose crinkle in disgust.
“I’ve been listening to this group for the past half hour and everything sounds the same.” Mimi said, grimacing as one of the singers tried for a high note and failed.
“Sounds like crap you mean. My gramma sounds better when she’s singing along to the vacuum cleaner. How long are you planning on staying here? We could go to another bar, you know, one less deafening.” Kayla could tell Mimi was seriously contemplating her suggestion.
“Yeah, I might. I was going to wait for awhile and see who else showed up, but it looks like this place is packed enough as it is.”
Kayla had a look around. It was packed for sure, and most of the people she barely recognized. She did notice one particular person standing out; Jake Thomas, but she only knew him by reputation. They had never actually spoken to one another. He was standing with one of his friends, Paul if she remembered correctly, and they were heading her way.
“…and in any case, I really wasn’t interested in going after him. He just seemed like a big dick to me anyways, even if he was good-looking. It’s always the attractive guys that turn out wrong and treat you like shit, right?” Kayla didn’t even notice that Mimi had launched into conversation. She was preoccupied with watching Jake and Paul approach, and fighting down the knot of nervousness in her throat. Both men were three years older than her, and both quite accomplished in their work. From what she had heard about them, they were the kind of people you should aspire to be. And they were coming to the couch.
“Mimi, why are they here? I thought they were done their degrees now?” Kayla nudged her friend, trying not to make it too obvious she was talking about the two men nearly on her. Mimi’s eyes widened slightly, and then a knowing smile touched her lips.
“Oh! Oh yes. Well it’s true they are done their degrees. I guess they are here to ah, maybe scope out the young blood.” Mimi chuckled, turning her attention to her drink. Jake didn’t make eye contact with her, but sunk silently into the couch beside her. Paul leaned against the armrest.
“Kayla Monroe, I hear you have quite a reputation now. Mr. Fallow can’t stop singing your praises. Soon you’re going to be the best journalist on the streets, according to him.” Paul said, giving her a saucy grin. He had quite a reputation himself, more with the ladies though. Jake turned to look at her, giving her a small smile.
“Yes. Mr. Fallow can’t stop talking about you. He seems very sad that this is your final year at the university. It looks like he wants to keep you here forever.” Jake finally spoke. Kayla found it too odd. Paul had stopped to talk to her before, mostly because she was a woman and he was hoping for some, but Jake had never uttered a word to her her entire life. For him to be doing it now…
“So, I also hear that you’re into a lot of fiction. Who are your favourite authors?” Jake asked, leaning in close so that Kayla could hear him. She was taken aback by the question. Jake Thomas, who had received some of the highest marks while at the university, was asking her who her favourite authors were? Bizarre.
“Well…I like a lot of authors, but I tend to go more with the description on the back of the book. I’m not afraid to explore unknown authors.” At that statement, Jake let out a quiet chuckle. He seemed like a nice guy, very tall but equally as lanky, with mousy brown hair and green eyes. He wore glasses, which gave him more of a professional look, and he dressed to impress. He really wasn’t the most handsome of men, but Kayla didn’t judge purely on looks. She had in the past, and that never got her far in the relationship department. As Mimi had said, it’s always the attractive guys that turn out wrong and treat you like shit. Eloquent as always. Paul grinned at her again, interrupting her thoughts.
“Will you excuse Jake and I for a moment? We need to have a quick chat.”
“No, of course. As if we would make you stay.” Mimi answered, giving Paul a too-wide grin. When Jake stood and followed Paul out of the pub, Kayla turned to Mimi.
“You had better tell me what is going on here.”
“Jake just really likes you, that’s all. He told me that on Tuesday.” Mimi finally explained.
“Jake…likes me? Why? I’ve never talked to him before, how can he possibly know that he likes me?” Mimi put her arm around Kayla’s shoulder, giving her that same knowing smile.
“Kayla honey. You know how men work. He likes the look of you. Right now he’s scoping out your personality. Making sure you’re not a crazy person.”
“Thanks.”
“Well, I know you’re crazy. In a wonderful way though. He’ll like that about you.” Mimi placed both her hands in her lap and winked at Kayla. The men returned just as Kayla was about to open her mouth again. Jake sat beside her again, and Paul held out a cigarette to Mimi.
“Wanna come out for a smoke?” He asked, already knowing the answer. Mimi jumped up, snatched the cigarette from his fingers, and placed it between her lips.
“Ok! Let’s go!”
Present Time
Jake sat beside Kayla, nervous fingers fumbling with the buttons on her blouse. This would be their first time together, and she felt it surprising that she was not nearly as scared as he was. He had told her before tonight that he had only one lover before her, and the sex they had wasn’t satisfying at all. Kayla wasn’t sure how satisfying she would be, considering she was a virgin. She had waited a long time to give it up, but now she was tired of waiting for Mr. Right. Mr. Now was all that mattered. He might become Mr. Right later, but there was no rush to decide that at the moment.
When he had disposed of her blouse and her bra, he gently pushed her against the mattress, her head resting on the pillow. He reached up to remove his glasses, placing them on the nightstand beside the bed.
“I hope that you like the music.” He said, smiling at her. It was a little to upbeat, she would have preferred something more calm, but music really didn’t matter right now.
“The music is fine.” She answered, watching him as he moved between her legs. Their jeans were still on, so she could barely feel his hardness through the fabric. Immediately Jake went for her breasts, toying with her nipples. Kayla was a little shocked that he didn’t work his way down to them, it felt like he was just rushing to get to the good parts. She moaned at all the right times, even though she didn’t feel it wholeheartedly.
When he had removed both their jeans and slipped on a condom, Kayla could feel the panic rising from taking a quick glimpse at his size. He was too big. She wouldn’t have guessed that he was this way, but it was the truth. She didn’t know how on earth he was going to get that inside of her.
“Ready?” He asked. She gulped, and hoped he didn’t see the horror in her eyes.
“…ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.” He nodded, and began to push inside of her. She closed her eyes, her eyebrows knitted tightly together as she could feel the tip push in. She felt like she was being torn open. A light sheen of sweat covered her body, and it wasn’t from pleasure.
“Are you okay?” Jake paused, looking genuinely worried. Kayla tried to smile, but was sure that she looked miserable.
“It just hurts a lot, that’s all.”
“Do you want to use some lube? I think I have some left over.”
“That would be appreciated.”
He pulled out and reached over to his nightstand, retrieving the bottle and passing it to Kayla. She squeezed a large dollop into her hand and coated his member with it, using another dollop to make herself wet.
“Okay, let’s try that again.” Kayla suggested, spreading her legs even further. He began to push in, and thanks to the lube, his entry was much smoother. It was no less painful though, and Kayla grimaced until he was fully sheathed.
“I’m in.” Jake informed her, stilling himself completely. Kayla nodded.
“…you can move. I’ll live.” He pulled out, and thrust back in, a bit more forcefully than she would have liked. Considering he took his last girlfriend’s virginity, she thought he would be a little gentler. He thrust deeply, and within a matter of minutes, he pushed himself fully in, grunted, and then was done. Pulling out, he threw the condom in the garbage and lay on the bed next to her.
“How was that for you?” He asked, gliding his fingers along her stomach.
“Painful.” She replied truthfully. He moved in to hug her.
“I hear it gets better in time. I’ll go as slow as you want me to.”
Kayla found his concern sweet, though she would have hoped that he exercised it while he was having sex with her. She understood that it felt best when he fully sheathed himself, but her cervix was not too happy to meet his huge erection just yet.
“Thanks Jake. I’m sure it’ll get better. It’s just our first time.”
------------------
“So, was it any good?” Mimi asked, pulling a cheesy fry out of her poutine. Kayla sat across from her, pushing around her noodles.
“Well, I mean, it wasn’t…good. It hurt.”
“That’ll get better.”
“So I hear.”
“How was his skill though?” Mimi grinned. Kayla shrugged.
“For having a previous girlfriend, he wasn’t that great. I’m sure that’ll get better too, but I guess…. I was just expecting something more wonderful out of our first time together.” She had hoped to feel that connection that so many lovers talked about, to feel that passion, but it just wasn’t there. He had told her before they had slept together that he loved her, and at the time she thought she felt the same. She had told him that she loved him as well, but now she was wondering if that was even the truth.
“Just give him some time. He’ll learn how to use his dick properly, and you also have to tell him what you like.”
“I don’t even know what I like.” Kayla moaned, resting her forehead in her palms. She thought she would feel sexually charged considering she masturbated enough. Often, especially when a gorgeous man looked at her, she felt her body thrum with excited sexual energy. With Jake though, it just wasn’t like that.
“Well, don’t get down about it. You’re not trapped.” It felt like that though. Jake was sensitive, and if she left him, he would be crushed. Just having those thoughts make her heart hurt. There was nothing wrong with him, in fact, he had a lot of good qualities that women looked for in future husbands…. It just wasn’t what she wanted. Kayla wanted something more, something she couldn’t put her finger on just yet.
“…just don’t give up on him yet Kayla. He was probably just nervous about your first time. After all, he knew he was dealing with a virgin. That’s a scary task sometimes.”
Mimi knew pretty much everything about Kayla, they were that close. There wasn’t one conversation topic that they shied away from together. Great friends were hard to come by, and Kayla knew she was beyond lucky to have her in her life.
“I’m not about to give up on him. I just wish… I don’t know. For something I can’t quite place my finger on but I can feel it in my heart.” Mimi nodded, understanding her friend.
“The sad truth is, we all want what you’re dreaming of. We rarely come across it though. True passion is really hard to find, and sometimes we never get it. Nowadays it’s really hard to find a man who will come out of nowhere and sweep you off your feet. Give you that heart-racing feeling, the chills.”
Kayla wished such a man existed, and she was certain that if he did, she would be able to spot him immediately. Although Jake was kind, she knew that what she wanted was more than he could give. Her heart didn’t feel completely satisfied.
---------------------
Jake lay beside Kayla, grinning lazily at her. Sex was a frequent thing between them now, and he could tell she was taking him with more ease. Although entry was still painful, it had dimmed a lot since their first time together.
“What are you thinking about?” He asked her, trailing his fingers down her throat. She flashed him a small smile.
“Nothing really. I’m just relaxing here, with you.” He grinned.
“Well, I love you. You’re so beautiful.”
“I love you too.” The words came out, but her heart didn’t quite echo the sentiment. It seemed that whenever Jake complimented her, it was on her looks and nothing else. He had said at the beginning of their relationship that he liked tan, dark-haired girls. That was her, and that was also his ex-girlfriend. That was probably every girl he had ever dated. She never had a preference on looks with men, so having Jake be so strict about it kind of weirded her out.
Kayla knew that she was a beautiful woman, though she had never used her looks to her advantage. Hard work was more important to her than making sure she looked gorgeous everyday. She had golden, bronzed skin, even without lying in the sun for hours. Her hair was long, a dark chocolate brown with only a slight wave. Although she got a lot of compliments on her curvy, petite figure and her colouring, the one attribute that got the most recognition was her eyes. They looked to be gold, rimmed with a thin line of hazel. They were unique, which was why they were the focus of attention when people first met her. She was accustomed to strangers staring.
The odd thing was though, Jake had never even mentioned her eyes. In fact, when she told him that they received many compliments because they were so different, he confessed that he hadn’t even noticed her eyes. That threw her off, and admittedly, made her heart hurt slightly. What kind of man who said he was in love didn’t even notice his girlfriend’s eyes, especially when they were so…strange. She couldn’t understand it.
He grinned at her, pushing her dark hair away from her face. Even though he constantly told her he loved her, she wasn’t so sure if he really understood what that meant. Love meant that he would note the little things about her, the good qualities, and her flaws. And her EYES, for God’s sake. How could he have not noticed? Holy damn.
“I can see us being together for a long time.” Jake finally said. Kayla kept silent. She didn’t even know what to think anymore.
---------------
“I just feel like a failed journalist sometimes. I don’t even know why I’m in this career. I haven’t seen any success at all. Tell me, why should I keep on with it?!” Jake spat angrily, turning away from Kayla. He had been out in the world already, but only for a short while. Kayla didn’t even know why he was upset. It’s not like he would receive considerable success so early in his career. At his age she knew she’d barely be out the door. It was hard to be in the same profession as her boyfriend, but she didn’t expect she’d have to put up with his frequent rants.
“I should just quit!” She came up from behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist. She was a foot shorter at 5’3, and when he got into this mood she felt even smaller.
“Listen Jake. I know that you’re upset because you haven’t gotten what you’ve dreamed of yet, but don’t give up. That wouldn’t be the right thing to do. Just keep doing what you’re doing and you will get what you want eventually.”
“I deserve success right now.” She resisted rolling her eyes. Someone just three years out of school could not expect to be in the big leagues immediately. He had to be kidding himself.
“Jake…everything takes time. Just keep working hard and you’ll be recognized.” She was just a month shy of earning her degree, and having to assure someone else of their career was draining, considering she was worrying about hers.
“I’m a failure.”
“Jake.”
They stood in silence for awhile, thinking their separate thoughts. Whenever Jake got like this, she constantly would remind him that things take time and success was hardly ever immediate. It always ended up that she would go to bed angry, whereas he would be consoled by her words. She couldn’t live like that, having to put up with his temper tantrums.
Another thing that had become a habit for him was talking about his ex-girlfriend. They were not on good terms, yet he still talked about her. Kayla didn’t even know what was going on inside his head, how he could act like that. For the first time in her life, she was tired of people instead of work. This was not the life she had dreamed for herself.

A/N: Please review! I would like to know what you think so far, and if there is enough interest in this. If it feels a bit rushed right now, it's supposed to be like that. You're to get a feel for what Kayla is having to deal with. For those wanting the actual romance - don't worry, it'll come eventually.
I also will be updating my other stories for the readers that are still hanging on. I'm so sorry to have you wait, and I fully intend to finish all my works, no matter how long it takes. Thanks and I will update soon! ^.^
